Hyam Signs New Contract
Thursday, 11th Oct 2012 16:22

Town midfielder Luke Hyam has put pen to paper on the contract extension until June 2014 he agreed last month. TWTD had revealed that the 20-year-old former Northgate High School pupil had begun talks regarding extending his previous deal, which he signed in February.

Hyam, whose new terms include an option for another season, told the club site: “I’m obviously pleased to have signed a new contract.

“I’ve had one year deals for a while, so this gives me some stability. Everyone knows that Ipswich is my club and I grew up watching the team play and I’d like to stay here and play for as long as I can.”

He admits he wasn’t always confident he would stay with the Blues: “I did think halfway through last season that I might have to move on.

“I wasn’t really playing any games and was a long way from getting in the first team. I could have gone out on loan but decided to stay at the club and have managed to turn things around.

“That’s been proved to be the right decision and now I just want to keep working hard and show the manager what I can do and hopefully play as many games as possible.”

Hyam, whose previous deal was understood to be worth only £650 a week, has made five first team starts this season, taking his overall appearances total to 28 including three games from the bench. The academy product is yet to score a senior goal.

Very good news. One of the kids we need to keep hold of. With the way we seem to get through midfielders these days, I'm sure he will get his chances.

Good news, still think he should have a 3 year deal though!

good news but I do think that we need to tie decent young players down to slightly longer deals. the danger is that they have a good season either this year or next and then we lose them for nothing.

Best piece of news out the club for a while. Now play him when he is fit.

shame we've loaded up on loan CM's so he wont get a chance to develop

For once a positive news story from PR. I wonder if the manager will pick him though ahead of a Spurs youth prospect & his loan signings. He should be on the team sheet week in week out when fit as he plays with purpose and drive we do lack somewhat

Good news, I hope his pay was at least tripled...

Now get Martin's contract sorted out (with a relegation release clause just in case)!

I like this we can comment on one of our own players. Very good young midfielder has all the qualities of a Matt Holland type player. PJ must give him games though.

2014! was it worth it?

Try protecting the clubs assests Clegg.

2015 should have been offerd as a minimum.

ITFC never learns.

2016 really should have been the starting point.

Excellent that he has been extended but as has already been pointed out, not long enough. Should have been for a minimum of 3 more years.
Lets hope the next manager plays him.

Giving the boy a 1 year deal last year was ridiculous, he should have been put on a 3-4 year deal this time last year.

But better late than never and I really dispari for the boy when pj is bringing 30 somthings in on a months loan!

As the manager has previously pointed out; young players should demonstrate that they are worthy of longer contracts on better money rater than just have them handed out on a plate. Hyam has shown a real willingness and had been justly rewarded. However, a 2 year deal means that there is further incentive to go on and better himself and, if greater progress is shown, then I am sure an extension will be discussed long before the 2014 expiry.

Great stuff....and a classic 'put's pen to paper' pick. A talent that I am sure we all hope will be a key part behind the team's successful future.

Lets hope he gets a proper chance now and does not stay at the end of a long line of loan players!

Yes good news...Jewell owes him after how he and Drury performed in the midfield for a few months in the new year, just a shame PJ had his Leadboots goggles on soon as he was fit and rarely made a continuous start since then thanks to the loans situation and Leadbitter!
