Campbell Happy to Be Lone Loan Striker
Wednesday, 17th Oct 2012 09:30

Frontman DJ Campbell says he’s quite happy to be a lone striker as well as a loan striker. With the Blues for three months from QPR, the 30-year-old impressed up front on his own in the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Cardiff — scoring a somewhat fortuitous debut goal — and looks set to keep his place at Hull on Saturday.

“I don’t mind. I’ve done that before. I did that all the season before last at Blackpool,” Campbell told Radio Suffolk.

“I was the lone striker and I scored a lot of goals in the Championship and the Premiership for them. I haven’t got a problem whether I'm on my own or with a partner.”

Campbell, who has spent the international break working on his fitness, says he’s at Town to score goals and gets annoyed with himself when he doesn’t take opportunities: “That’s my job! I’ve always been hard on myself when I’ve missed chances, even when I’m not fit. I expect to score most of the chances that I get and I have done over my career.

“It’s normal pressure to me and I love pressure like that and I love playing football. That’s all I want to do really — play football and enjoy myself.

"I know I’ll do that here and hopefully I’ll score the goals that will push us up the league.”

Campbell looks certain to be one of the permitted five domestic loanees included in the squad at the KC Stadium. The Blues currently have six - Campbell, Stephen Henderson, Danny Higginbotham, Massimo Luongo, Richie Wellens and Bilel Mohsni. Luongo would appear the most likely to miss out.

Daryl Murphy (Celtic) and Guirane N'Daw (St Etienne) don't count as they're from 'foreign' associations.

Meanwhile, centre-half Tommy Smith has begun his lengthy trip back to Suffolk after his international games with New Zealand, 2-0 and 3-0 victories over Tahiti.

The All Whites need just a point from their next World Cup qualifier against New Caledonia at home in March to confirm a play-off with a CONCACAF nation in November 2013 for a place at the World Cup in Brazil the following year.

Smith tweeted as he set off on his trek in the early hours UK time: “The start of a 34-hour trip. Christchurch-Sydney-Dubai-London-Ipswich.”

As far as I'm concerned Luongo should be sent back to Spurs now. No chance of a permanent signing, learning his trade. We don't want him, or at least I don't.

"Frontman DJ Campbell says he's quite happy to be a lone striker as well as a loan striker"

Correction needed here Phil.

Can't see Chops being dropped when he comes back. It will be two up front I'd imagine.

All the article really highlights once again is the sheer incompitence of PJ & SC.

Who on earth thinks its a good idea to sign more loan players than you are permitted to name in a squad? for every week there remains six, of which he can name 5 there is a wasted weekly salary if nothing else.

I'd be sacked if I employed similar tactics in my job.

I see Carlos Edwards is looking to get into management, come on then Carlos let's have you, you seriously wouldn't do any worse than the clown in place at the moment.

Campbell might be happy to be a lone striker, but I wouldn't be happy to see him used like that every week. If the Cardiff game was anything to go by, he needs good service from supporting players if he's going to thrive and at the very least could probably do with someone playing in the hole behind him.

I always feel that way about Chopra too - despite the sitters he has missed over time, he's still a top goalscorer. His record over the years proves it. But I don't consider him a creator. He needs people around him to provide him with the opportunity. Quite a contrast from Scotland - he might not be quite so clinical any more, but he can pick the ball up 40 yards from goal, barge past three men and smack it in from 20 yards.

Not many footballers can make something out of nothing. And I'm not sure DJ is one of them.

One up top hasn't worked great so far.... we need to go 442 or 352

Pazelle, nit picking but seeing as Henderson has never played in the Prem he hardly counts towards your serious spine

With all the cost of bringing in all these new duds we could have had Connor Wickham on loan.

What do the fans count for anyway?

Personally I would prefer to see 2 loan stikers instead of one put Daryl Murphy up top with DJ Campbell.

Luongo started his loan spell well, running the midfield. Now not flavour of the month for whatever reason. Should be in the squad every game.

@ IrishhTim

I havent heard anything about Owen Garvan.
I was sorry to see him go but would be happy to see him back in the future. Keane completely shattered his confidence.

He seems to be playing well, consistantly and plundering a few goals too.
Wouldnt mind if we have him and Liam Trotter in our midfield.

Where did u hear the Garvan story??
