Town Linked With McCarthy Talks
Friday, 26th Oct 2012 20:14

Town are reported to have spoken to former Millwall, Republic of Ireland, Sunderland and Wolves boss Mick McCarthy. The 53-year-old has always been viewed as amongst the experienced bosses the Blues would be interested in speaking to as they look for a replacement for Paul Jewell, who left by mutual consent on Wednesday.

Presumably as a result of the reports, the odds on McCarthy becoming the next Blues boss have tumbled with some bookmakers

The club are remaining tight-lipped regarding potential targets, refusing to rule in or out any specific individuals.

McCarthy, who left Wolves in February and spoke to Nottingham Forest this summer, would appear to fit the profile of the new manager Town are looking for as outlined by chief executive Simon Clegg at Wednesday’s Supporters Club AGM: “This is not going to be a high-risk appointment.

“We need to have someone that we’ve got confidence in, who has got the necessary experience and skill-base to get us out of this current hole and get us to where we want to go in the long run.”

talbs set the tone with second post. lots of others have echoed similar comments and very few comments are getting many thumbs up. suggests to me that this appointment is 'safe' but uninspiring and shows a lack of ambition. we are in hung parliament territory and the 'voters' will quickly turn against him if the promised results aren't delivered. go get karl robinson and see if he can do what lambert and adkins achieved

To be honest, I believe this is going to be a great appointment the more I think about it. For all the reasons that have already been stated.

Every time I mentioned his name I got loads of negative votes... but I think he's perfect for us right now. To level the boring tag at him is a bit harsh in my opinion.

Sorry, have some fans already forgotten what the last 'safe' appointment did to the club? This will only result in the same boring, under achieving, weak performances that have become the norm at Portman Road. Coyle, Megson, McCarthy, Jewell. It's all the same. 'They have just re-badged it you fool' as Partridge would say.

McCarthy isn't quite the worst option but to my mind ITFC should do whatever it takes to get Curbishley in, as they should have done 2 years ago when it was clear Keane wasn't going to turn things around.

Curbs has the experience, ability & know-how to not only steer the club clear of relegation but also build a team capable of establishing itself at Premiership level, as he showed at Charlton. Remember he also managed to save WHU from relegation when they were all but down (admittedly with a bit of illegal help from Tevez) and had them comfortable in mid-table the following season before his spat with them.

I don't think any of the other candidates being mentioned come close to matching his credentials, and after being out of management for so long he will be determined to prove the likes of Wolves & Villa wrong not to offer him acceptable terms. I would give him a 5 -year contract & get Matt Holland & Mervyn Day in to assist him - the club needs an overhaul followed by some continuity, & I would stick with this crew even if they ultimately failed to avoid the drop. Many clubs (i.e. Norwich, Southampton, Leicester) have bounced back quickly and far stronger, and there's no reason why ITFC couldn't do the same under Curbs, although my gut feeling is he would manage to turn things around this season, so a season in Div 1 would not be necessary.

If Curbs can't be pursuaded then I'd probably go for Billy Davies - Sean Dyche might also be worth considering if he doesn't get the Burnley job. For me, though, Curbs would be both the safest and most exciting appointment in terms of getting ITFC back where they belong.

After today I think Mick is the man for the job. Stands no messing, got both Sunderland and Wolves up. People talk about the football style but when Wolves got promoted he had Kightly and Jarvis out wide, Carl Henry running the game from midfield and Ebanks Blake etc up front scoring for fun. It was not kick and rush. He even made Jody Craddock look half reasonable and my gran is quicker than him...
George Burley is my sentimental pure footballing choice but he would need time, something unless we are happy with the thrid tier of English football we simply have not got....
Think Mick would want to prove a point to RK too, that he could succeed where RK failed spectacularly.... Its time for Mr McCarthy....
