Town Linked With McCarthy Talks
Friday, 26th Oct 2012 20:14

Town are reported to have spoken to former Millwall, Republic of Ireland, Sunderland and Wolves boss Mick McCarthy. The 53-year-old has always been viewed as amongst the experienced bosses the Blues would be interested in speaking to as they look for a replacement for Paul Jewell, who left by mutual consent on Wednesday.

Presumably as a result of the reports, the odds on McCarthy becoming the next Blues boss have tumbled with some bookmakers

The club are remaining tight-lipped regarding potential targets, refusing to rule in or out any specific individuals.

McCarthy, who left Wolves in February and spoke to Nottingham Forest this summer, would appear to fit the profile of the new manager Town are looking for as outlined by chief executive Simon Clegg at Wednesday’s Supporters Club AGM: “This is not going to be a high-risk appointment.

“We need to have someone that we’ve got confidence in, who has got the necessary experience and skill-base to get us out of this current hole and get us to where we want to go in the long run.”

To be honest, not my first choice but puts me in the mind of Bill McGarry when we needed him... so why not- then hopefully when he moves on we will get the next RR :-)

I'd like Curbishley.

Think he would be the right man at the right time although would not have been my first choice a few weeks back but the more I think about it the more it makes sense. We need a guy like him to come in and sort out the men from the boys so we can get back on track again. Just an opinion.

Guarantee he won't spend all game sitting on his fat arse!
Go get him!
Up the town!

I've got no real problem but I'm very surprised at how popular he is here considering his general lack of popularity at the clubs he has managed.

The physical style of football is my only concern, but we have hardly seen passing football anyway for years upon years and we badly do need some strength and height in the team.

Mick McCarthy is one of few managers to get two teams promoted alongside, erm, Paul Jewell. His record and experience are excellent and if appointed I would be fully behind him.

Personally think McCarthy lacks character, but you can't knock his record.

Phil - instead of yes/no votes on individual potential managers, why not run a poll on all leading candidates? It would be really interesting to see how the voting is split, someone at the club may even pay attention to it.

Passionate, strong willed, no nonsense

Yeah I see why some of you muppets don't want him, he might just sort the club out and then what will you whine about

Would be a good appointment. Knows the game, knows players. And in answer to certain posters, right now I'd settle for mid table or just below. For goodness sake, whoever comes in, let's at least get behind him and the team, or we're as guilty as Clegg and ME of letting the club down!

My first choice would be the MK manager, but Mick would do me or maybe Duncan Ferguson or Coyle.

But a big no to any previous managers (Burley maybe as a mentor to a younger manager, but that's all) and definitely no in my opinion to Curbs - just like Jewell had been!!

Stop the interview, just give him the job Evans. He's the man to take the club forward, not Shearer or Curbishley.

mcarthy is boring dull and depressing we need a colourfull c haracter and inspirational manager not mcarthy or megson this club needs a big lift and as someone has pointed out already if you read keans biography it doesnt make a good picture of the man.

The last 2 'personalities' have been rubbish, so bring in the boring but good managers: Curbs or McCarthy

Groundhog day for me. Same/similar credentials as Jewell "gets clubs out of the championship". I'd give Clegg more credit if he didn't go for the "safe" bet. If Clegg was the manager he'd play one up front at home and that is where the problem lies.

I'd be delighted with McCarthy. i really don't care what style we play so long as it's successful. The football over the last 5 years has been dire anyway so at least get results! Bags of experience and knows what it takes to get promoted from this league!

This would be absolutely the right choice for Town. We don't need someone to win personality contests or be best mates with half the league. We need an experienced manager who can assemble a solid team and get our team up the league. As for comments earlier regarding 'boring' football played by his teams I can recall Town being completely outclassed on more than one occasion by a Wolves team built and maintained by MMcC, and that for me is more important than fancy footie.

Oh, the delicious irony if he were to succeed where Roy Keane failed!

McCarthy - has a 50/50 record, got teams up (S'land, Wolves), ultimately relegated and sacked with both. Similar to Jewell, promotions at Bradford and Wigan, epic fail at Sheff Wed and Derby, 50/50 when he can here. Not good enough...
Davies - play off failure after failure, 1 promotion - sack soon after. Epic fail. Not good enough...
Coyle - 1 promotion, 1 relegation, 50/50 like Jewell, not good enough...
Burley - loads of play off failures, 1 promotion, 1 relegation, a handful of sackings, put nostalgia aside people!!! Not good enough...
Most of the others - un-tried gambles. WE CAN'T GAMBLE, have you seen the league table???

1 man head and shoulders above the rest. OK 1 relegation but 4 promotions with that same club - started off in third tier football, administration, skint, rock bottom. Finished mid table Prem and of the short list for England manager, regrettably edged by Schteve McClaren for the job. EPIC relegation save, 7 wins from 9 including away at Old Trafford, left the club safely in mid table Prem. NEVER FAILED! NEVER SACKED! 100% record then, UN-LIKE Jewell's patchy record coming here. PPL stop comparing him to Jewell..., way way better, should have got in instead of Keane or PJ..., wasted years. Please please please step forward the ONLY credible candidate - ALAN CURBISHLEY.

Would be a very good appointment, knows the way he wants to play and what ever system that is; he will perfect it. Takes no sh*t from anyone. Either him or Billy Davies please, cannot believe what Forest did to him and he got them results.

I would be happy if McCarthy got the job. Wouldn't mind him, Robinson, Coyle or Burley. My wild card would be Holloway as he loves ITFC but cannot see him leave Blackpool just yet.
I do not want Hutchings, Megson, Shearer, Cotterill or Matt Holland(ITFC legend but has never been a coach or manager)

i've said it elsewhere but Mick McCarthy, would be a solid choice. With regards to the above post, Curbishley has been out of the game too long, that's the trouble we had with Jewell. Mccarthy is fresh (comparatively). Anyway whatever we say on here isn't going to have a bearing on the choice, but whoever it is, we need to get behind them and give them time (and that is a reasonable amount of time, not 2 or 3 games) to get to grips with the team and build.

After the Jewell debacle, Mick would be an excellent signing. People forget he has also managed and been successful at International level and has stood up to players such as erm, Roy Keane. the likes of Chopra and JET need a boot, not a hug and Mick would do that. I agree there are concerns over Mick's style, BUT PJ (as predicted) played a one up front and often 'hoof' ball - so it won;t be any worse. Mick was not relegatedat Wolves - in fact his record was excellent - and many Wolves fans still blame relegation on his sacking. A complete contrast from Derby fans views that PJ 'destroyed' their club prior to his appointment at PR. Curbs is still my choice, but Mick would be a good second - above the likes of Megson and backwards steps for Burley etc.
