Town Linked With McCarthy Talks
Friday, 26th Oct 2012 20:14

Town are reported to have spoken to former Millwall, Republic of Ireland, Sunderland and Wolves boss Mick McCarthy. The 53-year-old has always been viewed as amongst the experienced bosses the Blues would be interested in speaking to as they look for a replacement for Paul Jewell, who left by mutual consent on Wednesday.

Presumably as a result of the reports, the odds on McCarthy becoming the next Blues boss have tumbled with some bookmakers

The club are remaining tight-lipped regarding potential targets, refusing to rule in or out any specific individuals.

McCarthy, who left Wolves in February and spoke to Nottingham Forest this summer, would appear to fit the profile of the new manager Town are looking for as outlined by chief executive Simon Clegg at Wednesday’s Supporters Club AGM: “This is not going to be a high-risk appointment.

“We need to have someone that we’ve got confidence in, who has got the necessary experience and skill-base to get us out of this current hole and get us to where we want to go in the long run.”

I'd be quite happy with this if it happens. McCarthy would get the team organised and instil a bit of discipline, two things which are lacking in the squad. The football may not be sparkling but I think Mick would be an experienced head to lead us out of this mess. He's also very honest and straight-talking, and a very nice bloke.

Just a stark reminder for those who talk about boring football and lack of entertainment- may I remind you of where we sit in the league. I would much rather watch no thrills no nonsense football and scrap wins than be dazzled with fancy football all the way down to League 1

Has anybody else heard the rumours about Yallop and Mariner being interviewed??

Exactly wkj, a dose of realism is required here. We need an organiser and, unfortunately (given recent events), a disciplinarian. Results come first, purists football second for the time being. McCarthy could prove to be a good fit for this club in that he's an honest, down-to-earth no nonsense kind of character.

There are three names in my book.

Karl Robinson -outstanding candidate, but now is not the time to be trying to change our game completely whilst we are in a dog fight. Also he has recently committed himself to MK Dons whilst other clubs had sniffed around , so I think this is probably a no goer at this time and probably not the right choice for the predicament we find ourselves in.

Ian Holloway - who I have a sneaky feeling might just be tempted to leave Blackpool with a far superior deal at Ipswich and the promise of funds(but will Evans be up for it).

Or finally the most pragmatic choice, lets face it he will only probably be on a two year deal- and we are unlikely to get into the premiership before his contract expires and if we do I am sure we will happily renew it!!!

So step forward Mick McCarthy and do the deal now Marcus.

ps I didn't want Joe Royle but I have to say under the circumstances he did a superb job for Town - I feel Mick could equally be a shrewd and tactical appointment.

Oh and Mick knows how to defend, so we should soon be able to say goodbye to the copious repeats of the "rocky horror show" from our back four and covering midfielders.

We do have some talented footballers at our club (Loach, Cresswell, Hyam, Drury, JET, Taylor, Chopra, Hewitt, Chambers, Martin etc). With the right manager in charge (McCarthy) I really feel that we could turn this slump around.
Not the man to lead us into the Premiership. And I hope fans on here realise that a bottom-half finish (out of bottom 3) would be a great season from the position we are in.
I hope McCarthy is brought in. I hope that when he is brought in it is clear to the fans what the expectations are for the rest of the season (avoid relegation).
One thing he will overhaul is all the coaches. McCarthy is known to work alongside more coaches than most (likes to have as much individual attention on each player as possible when it comes to fitness etc). Could see him sticking with Liddell (for time being until he has had a chance to assess him) but could also see him bringing people alongside him.
Hutchings is going to have to do a great job right now- he is fighting for his existence at this club. Love the fighting talk he has produced in the last few days. That's the spirit he needs to keep his job. Could still see McCarthy bringing in his own man as Assistant though (eventually).
The Portman faithful are going to be upset with the longball tactics, but if it grinds us out results we will stay in this League.
Here's to a safe season this season followed by a push for glory next!
Time to give some of our poncy footballers a damn good kick. Bring in Vinnie Jones as number 2.

I wasn't initially convinced by the idea of McCarthy as a successor, however the idea of hime taking the reins at PR is starting to grow on me. His style of football may not be to everyone's cup of tea, but he's a solid manager at Championship level and know's how to organise a squad. We could do a lot worse IMO.

People talk about MMc teams not playing attractive or exciting football. What's the problem I haven't seen any of that for a long time at PR! What I have done is watch a team throw away points - can't see MMc standing for that so he gets my vote over Curbs.

For humorous post match interviews, infectious passion and flowing football then bring on Ian H but sadly it wont happen. This will doubtless please the caterers as people wouldn't be sneaking out early for a half-time pie and a pint in case they missed a moment of brilliance or one of IH's rants from the touchline!

YESSSSSS!!!! McCarthy is exactly the kind of manager we need in this situation. Players like McCarthy (except if youre Roy Keane) and he is experienced at bring clubs from Championship to Premier League. Get him in and bring Matt Holland as his No2.

This is the one. As mick mills said, his scouting network, his experience and his ability to bring on players is proven. We need this man!

In an ideal world not my first choice.
With where we are now, and with this group of players my first choice.
Think he would at least steady the ship and hopefully kick some of our so called star players backsides.

Would be an excellent appointment. Would sort our current players out who under perform week in week out and bring some steel to our team.

Agree he may not play the most entertaining football but its effective and it wins matches. We have endured years of dross with poor results so this is am improvement!

But most important is to get out of the relegation zone and rebuild from there and he could just be the man to do it.

Too similar to Jewell for my liking, though perhaps a notch or 2 better. Journeyman manager with some successes and some failures. May get us out of trouble, but not sure if he'd take us any further. I'd feel as underwhelmed if he was appointed as I felt when Jewell was. Would much prefer someone like Hill, Smith, Robinson or Tisdale.

Hearing fears of "long ball" etc reminds me of hammers fans complaining about BIg Sam appointment....where are they now? Would be perfect for us now..gets teams promoted from this level and wolves were mad to sack him...add to that he has a point to prove!

Like many people not a first choice, however of the names mooted and those most likely MMc would be a decent choice. The actions of some of our players in recent times have no doubt not helped morale, the connection with the ordinary fan or PJ for that matter. Mick would bring discipline and that may be enough to kick start our season. The players in our squad (save the defence and the ridiculous amount of loan players) are plenty good enough to be doing well in this league.

He would do me would just like to see whoever comes in when ever they come in not given 1 day to sort things out before the next match so if it is before the brum game get him in on Monday so he has at least a week to get his points across

Good choice for me - he has loads of experience and would get the team organised plus he wont take any nonsence from the players - they will know exactly where they stand with him

Get Keano back as his number 2! ;)

dirtydingusmagee added 08:55 - Oct 27
good manager, and can handle difficult situations and players, comes over as being a bit dull but first and foremost we need someone who can get us out of the crap and regain the respect and credibility ITFC have had in past.Perhaps a short term contract to start ,with extended deal if we move away from relegation zone ,THAT in itself is main object and will be tough enough .COYB

Long ball, short ball, pretty football. Who cares!!!!

So long as the next manager - whoever it is and I hope it is McCarthy - sorts out the mess. He would be the ideal person to sort out some of the playes who think they are better than they actually are

I actually think he was unlucky to lose his job at Wolves. He got them up and they played a decent brand of football. If he comes and plays a target man so be it. As someone said earlier has not done West Ham any harm

Hope the appointment comes sooner rather than later. Would like it early next week if possible so the new man can get stuck in before next Saturday

McCarthy with Holland as no 2 does sound appealing!
