McCarthy: Not Pretty or Sexy But Dogged and Determined
Saturday, 10th Nov 2012 18:34

Manager Mick McCarthy admitted that his side’s performance wasn’t pretty or sexy — aside from DJ Campbell’s winning goal - but was delighted with what was a gritty win over Burnley in his first home game in charge of the Blues.

McCarthy said: “It wasn’t pretty or silky or sexy, but it was dogged and determined and all those horrible words that people don’t like, but are vital to winning games.

“The goal was silky and sexy, that was a good finish. What was nice was that having conceded a goal, I didn’t think we looked like conceding another one, whereas the other night we got a bit flaky.

“It looked like there were chances coming and then the guys who have gone on have made the chance. It’s a great finish, it was a great break.”

He was delighted to see his team hit back after Burnley’s equaliser, having lost from a similar position all too often this season: “I’m pleased with it. I’ve been stressing the importance of being hard to beat.

“It’s a league of teams that are hard to beat or try and make themselves hard to beat, try and be organised.

“I said to them beforehand, there will be times when we make mistakes and we lose goals and we lose games, but what we don’t do is we don’t give up and we don’t give in, and the performance today epitomised that.”

Before the Clarets equalised, Carlos Edwards passed to Campbell from inside the area when he might have shot, but his manager wasn’t too critical of his skipper’s decision: “I hadn’t got a great view of that. I thought that what he did was right, but he just didn’t do it properly.

“I thought Nigel Reo-Coker immediately afterwards, we had a good break there where we’d won it back and he didn’t execute the final pass, maybe that’s indicative as well.

“I’ll have a look at it Monday, maybe he could have shot. I don’t know. If you’ve got DJ Campbell on your right-hand side in a good position, I’d maybe roll it to him myself because I’d fancy him to score.”

McCarthy thought there was little to complain about in Murphy’s goal: “I didn’t think there was anything wrong with it, I thought he just stood his ground. He stood there and the keeper came and bumped into him, that’s all he did.

“I actually thought the one in the first half when he dropped it and the referee gave a freekick [wasn’t a foul], I was whinging like a drain because I thought he was giving a freekick unnecessarily.

“I can understand why Burnley are moaning about it. I haven’t seen it again, but I thought he stood his ground, and if he stands still and doesn’t back into him then I think it’s a goal, it’s legit.”

While delighted with the victory, the Blues boss did have one complaint, the way Look East portrayed his pre-match press conference.

“My press conference yesterday was full of fun,” he said. “And the bit I saw was just before it started and I was sat [slumped] like that, and they asked me the question ‘Is it a must-win game’ and I said 'Not really, but it would be nice to start like that'.

“I thought ‘What a negative perspective to put on the club’. On me, on the club. They didn’t show any of that when I was laughing and joking.

“I thought it would have been nice if they could have put a positive spin on it, we’d had three points out of six and we were coming into a home game.

"I thought they did me a disservice, I thought they did the club a disservice and made me look like I was dour and not looking forward to the game.”

Burnley manager Sean Dyche, who said Sam Vokes was claiming his side’s goal, felt his team deserved a point from the match.

Regarding Murphy’s goal, the former Watford boss was aggrieved if not angry: “I would say that I’m mildly disappointed. I’m not going to go over the top about it because I think referees have a really tough job.

“When there’s a coming together of that nature, then I think it’s fair to say in modern football that it gets given as a foul. We see them every week, even in the Premier League. I’d question the decision and I think it’s a soft one, which has gone against us."

He thought it was inconsistent given the first half decision in similar circumstances: “That was the disappointing thing.

"There has to be parity of decisions, especially key decisions. I thought the one in the first half, I was surprised, although Jason Shackell did great to react and clear it off the line. I thought that was a soft decision, but it didn’t matter because it was cleared and the game went on.

“The one the other end mattered because it went in, and they’re the big decisions which can change the feel of the game, and it changed the feel of the game, it wasn’t just the score. They suddenly believed.”

Finally a win at home! Great tactics today by MM, and he's the one that finally has realized that Edwards isn't a right back. It took him 2 games to notice that, or even before that. Reo Coker and N'Daw in the middle looked very solid, and arguably Reo Cokers best game in a Town shirt so far this season. Sean Dyche cannot moan at one decision against his team. We should of had about 15 free kicks today but nope, all we get is sh*t refs!! And finally the goal at the end, the North stand went crazy! Haven't seen our fans celebrating like that since we got that goal against Arsenal. Terrific, now onwards and upwards.. big home game coming up.

We have won two games out of three which is positive.

The trouble is that even after winning them we are still threatened by relegation; 22nd place and a goal difference of minus 19. Be under no illusions, this is going to be a long hard season. I hope that Mr McCarthy can keep us in the Championship and bring us on next year, but it is going to be tough. "Pretty and Sexy" can go out of the window, it is survival that counts.

@bossman - yes mate! Finally and look at the impact!

It'll be interesting to see who comes in for Wellens now.
Drury playing a similar role?
Martin even through woefully out of form?
JET or Carson?
Moshni?
Murphy but why change a winning side unless necessary?

An interesting one. I'd still go with Martin for his work rate but get Cresswell in better areas to deliver rather than relying on Martin's final ball.

Mick McCarthy is a blue. Is a blue. Is a blue. He hates Look East too!

Every town fan knows about scumtv, I can remember when Naaarrwich were in league one and they spent about ten minutes on interviews with their people after a draw; yet TOWN won the same weekend and we didn't even get a picture or anything. The same can be said about ITV as well as they too are based in the place up the road. I think our MP should ask questions in the house. TODAY WAS FANTASTIC....COYB!!!!!

great result and also good that we conceeded late but responded, first time that has happened for a great many months.

we just need to keep this going, 5 or 6 points every 3 games is what it is about between now and May - anything extra is a bonus. Hopefully we will be out of the bottom 3 by christmas and MM can concentrate on having a good transfer window. He also needs to sort out the contract situation for next year.

No doubt MM is the right man and love the way he speaks to the press, handles the players and has already identified that look east is really Canary TV!

Let's not get carried away but enjoy the win and I am hoping we have seen the last loss at home this season already!

Great result well done MM. Spot on about Look East as well. They have always been budgie boys. At the moment we need to be playing it tight to win games. Win ugly if you like to call it that. But please floridaboy don't come out with silly comments like "kicking the Ipswich way of playing in to touch". At the moment we need to play like we are but moving forward i would love for us to be playing the" Sir Bobby Robson Ipswich way again." You can be successful playing good football. It just isn't what is required from us at the moment to move forward.

Really interesting to hear McCarthy having a go at a the local TV press who we have all known for years, has always been pathetically biased to that lot up the road, good on you Mick, another gold mark in endearing you to the fans.

As for todays game, I thought we fought, worked hard and, most importantly, pulled together after Burnley equalised and went again for the first time in a long time and deservadly got the win with a quality goal with a maginificent run and cross by Edwards.

I thought Edwards, Wellens and N'Daw were excellent along with Tommy Smith. Were going to miss wellens if we cant keep him as Drury has struggled this season.

Great coming out of PR with a smile, I thought the crowd today were magnificent, bottom of the league, 16000 still in the ground getting behind the team, fantastic effort from everyone.

Now onto Leicester.....weirder things have happended guys!

Well done Town, a hardcfought victory against a suprisingly average Burnley side. Big Mac has got us working. Still early days so we still get some beatings. But its a slow step in the right direction. Yes it aint pretty, but isnt has been for years. In our situation results are the most important thing. McCarthy will get our club back on track even if it takes 2 years, his record speaks for itself. Nice dig at Look Norwich as well he is coming round to the Ipswich way already

Well done the lads! Great win today! To be honest, i'd rather grind out a result than play sexy football, we feel more solid, because when i watch town try and play sexy football it doesnt do my heart any good! lol. But with MM in charge feels like we are moving solidly in the right direction.

marcus9, I agree with everything you say but I want to see Look Worst come to Town; for when we finally ascend to our rightful god given position...above Nnaaarrwich and we will; I want to see them eat humble canary pie and choke on those disgusting yellow feathers.

We looked like a serious Championship unit and got stuck into them. Great to see MM commanding the game from the dugout for the full 96 mins. We sang for The Lads too. Brilliant.

Look Scum have always been .... well, Scum - ever since the 70's.

Wow, I enjoyed that

To be fair, I thought PJ had good press conferences ... even Keane did too.

MMc's comments to the press are just as entertaining but the are real too... He has worked out the local press quickly and more importantly worked out the best position for our captain THANK GOD

Great effort, good tactics and a Great day!!

Not really bothered about Dyche's comments, but totally agree about consistent ref decisions...........and he got it wrong in the first half Dyche.

It helps when you play players in their best positions (Murphy and Edwards at least). Lets hope MM continues this sensible approach and we can build on the last two wins and move up the table. I expect us to be lower mid-table by Xmas ....

Played Two up front, Two goals scored, both from the Two Strikers, that's what we have wanted all along, after the first half hour I felt we became the better side and deserved to win, it's so pleasing to see us winning again, very well done Mick, the players gave everything today.

MM must have been reading TWTD where many have been stating the bleeding obvious, Carlos is a winger rather than a right back. It's taken the third Manager to spot it. Well done MM and well done the team. Especially N'Daw put out in the cold by PJ and now rightfully back in the side.

Another great day out, just like Birmingham. Gritty not pretty.

Look East - pah! If you live in the west of the region all you get is news on Milton Keynes, which is not even in East Anglia!!! You wait. When we get some success again they'll come fawning all over us again. Until then we'll just get "news Norfolk" because it saves them travelling out of their comfort zone.
On the football front, Mick knows Carlos is a winger from working with himn in the past, remember. Let's hope the confidence comes back to the team and that some judicious signings strengthen us in the new year.

Ndaw gives us something in the middle of the park which we haven't had for a long time, what was PJ thinking?

Everyone has said what needs to be said about Edwards.

My main worry is Henderson, poor kicking, poor distribution and not that confident in him.

And how great to see terry connor at the end congratulating every player as they come. We have a proper manager and number 2.

In Mick we trust.

heard a rumour that Chopra is going to get his contract paid up as he is gambling again.
0

Keaneish added 23:46 - Nov 10
@scooterblue - i'd like to think there's something written in there which would mean that was a break in contractual agreement given we knew his circumstances when we took him on.

Doubt there's much truth in that.

As others have said , look east and Anglia think that the east of England ,starts and finishes at the Norfolk border.no point in being angry Mick ,It's always been that way, doubt if it will ever change
