Town Draw Aston Villa Away
Sunday, 2nd Dec 2012 14:38

Town have drawn Aston Villa away in the third round of the FA Cup. The game could see former Blue Darren Bent come up against his old club.

The teams have previously been drawn in the competition on four occasions with Town victorious twice and Villa twice.

Back in the 1938/39 season Villa won 2-1 at Portman Road in a replay, Fred Jones netting for the Blues, after 1-1 draw at Villa Park, Jock Hutcheson having grabbed the Town goal in that game.

In 1974/75 the Blues ran out 3-2 victors in a fifth round tie also on Suffolk soil with Bryan Hamilton (2) and David Johnson on the scoresheet for Town.

The most famous FA Cup meeting between the teams came in the 1980/81 campaign in which the Birmingham side pipped the Blues to the First Division title.

As well as winning both league games between the teams, Town were 1-0 winners in a third round tie at Portman Road, Paul Mariner netting the goal.

More recently, at the fifth round stage in 1995/96 Town lost 3-1 at home. Paul Mason scored for Town, while Mark Draper, Ian Taylor and Dwight Yorke were on target for the home side, who are now managed by former Canaries boss Paul Lambert.

In the league, the teams last met during Town's last Premier League campaign, 2001/02. At Villa Park, Finidi George put the Blues in front in the 18th minute, but two goals from Juan Pablo Angel saw the home team to the three points. The Portman Road game ended 0-0.

Third round ties will take place on the weekend of 5th and 6th January 2013.

Not a million miles to travel & a tie we can get something from in our current form. Love to do Paul Lambert a proper one. Scum is always scum no matter what colour you dress them in, even the scum hate him & his treatment of Darren Bent has been disgraceful. Let's have it at Villa Park & show the Premiership our intention of an imminent return. Wembley in May anyone?

Dear ITFC ticket office

Please do not make a sow's ear of our ticket allocation (like you did with Chelsea a couple of years back) and let us take a very decent following to the midlands.

Who remembers going there in the League Cup in 88/89? 6-0 down, with David Platt getting four, before Sticky Mockwell and Dalian Atkinson scored a couple of belters to give us a moral victory.

Hope Bent plays and gets a great reception from Town fans. He stuck with us longer than most of our academy stars, scored loads of goals and his sale was lucrative for the club. He is the most clinical finisher of his generation, I'd argue since Gary Lineker. The fact he hasn't been among the first names on the England teamsheet for the past 5-6 years reflects how badly the national side has been managed.

I love the optimism on here but personally I think it is an awful awful draw as usual in this competition. A 20000 gate to share if we are lucky and an early exit I fear. That will at least mean we can concentrate on retaining our Championship status. Thank heavens we won yesterday which is all that matters at the moment but getting a bit down being in the shadows of that lot up the road who will undoubtedly stay up now with the massive windfall from hugely increased premier league income from next season. Still we have the history they connot compete with. Great result at Cardiff today and well done to MM for turning things around so quickly.

I don't mind drawing a decent Premier League team - if we win it will be a momentous occasion (not least because we will have beaten the ex-manager of the scum) but if we lose, no one will really mind, as long as we play well, as the odds will be very much against us. However, by then we may be more of a force to compete with - there will be a few days for Mick to work his transfer magic!

Why so sad? Could have drawn a lower league side away with nothing to gain in victory or defeat, other than progression in the competition. An early chance for Mick to get his teeth into some premiership opposition & see exactly how far wev'e come. Bring it on.

TrumptonBlue. I remember it well....................and also for nearly getting a good kicking by some Villa fans after. Just managed to talk my way out of it (and with some intervention by more level headed home fans). If i remember, we still had half an hour to play at 6-0 down & was seriously thinking it could be double figures before our two super strikes. The pundits might single this tie out as a possible upset if our current form continues to improve.

Be interesting to see what sort of game Cressy has after the summer speculation!

Showing my age here, I was at the home tie in the fifth round in 74/75! A fantastic match in which Bryan Hamilton came on as sub and almost singlehandedly dragged us back from 0-2 down to win 3-2. Before that we'd beaten Liverpool in the Fourth Round in front of a record crowd, which was then beaten again against Leeds in the Sixth Round. I was one of the 38,010 that day, too. It was my first season of going to games, and what a season to have started. With the way things have been in the last 5-6 years, I feel very privileged to have been treated to such great times.

Does anyone know MMs record of team selection in cup matches? Does he go for the win or does he stick a load of reserves in like some other managers?

Mind you, his options might be limited anyway if all of our loanees' Parent Clubs dont give us permission to play them

Looking at the cup draw only four premier league clubs can go out so its a big chance we could get drawn to another premier side in the next round if we beat villa.
It would be nice to go on a cup run but we have enough on our hands just trying to keep in the league and we could pick up injurys to key players.
Also we are playing well at the moment and if we get beat bad by one of the big clubs it could affect the moral too.
We are in a no win situation because its great to do well in the FA Cup but it could do us more harm then good in the long run except for bringing in a little extra money.
But i still hope we beat Villa because we owe their manager for what he did to us when he was Manager with the dicky birds down the road and it would be nice to do it on their own turf and then draw city at portman road in the next round and then knock them off their perks too.
With our great new Manager anything can happen.

Hi
Unfortunatly I think both managers will field "weakened teams". MM made lots of changes in Cup games at Wolves and Lambert used to change the Nodge 11 for the cup if I remember right. Good draw for me though as I only live down the road (Sutton Coldfield)

Always quite liked Villa. Same sentiment obviously does not extend to their current manager, however. Would be good to see "the Boy Bent" play as I've followed his career since his first Town appearance. Even if Villa are expected to win, we could get something out of this game. COYB!

i remember the 3 - 1 defeat at Portman Road, could've been 8 - 1 if Savo Milosevic could actually score a goal lol

i think we could beat them this time round!! COYB!!

Sir Ben, it was Clive Baker in goal for us that day. Was at the opposite end of the ground - Clive Baker was a legend for us, much steadier than Craig, but lacked height.
