U18s Beat Bristol City in Youth Cup
Tuesday, 4th Dec 2012 20:44

A superb first half strike from Tom Winter (pictured) gave Town a 1-0 FA Youth Cup third round victory over Bristol City at Ashton Gate in a game where they were up against it for the entire second half.

Town went into this game having already played their opponents earlier in the season losing 0-4 at Playford Road.

The Blues, watched by manager Mick McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor, started brightly with the best chance of the opening five minutes, Mark Timlin shooting wide of the right post from inside the area.

As they started to get into the game it looked as though the Robins were going to take the lead with Rhys Jordan having plenty of time at the back post but a poor shot across goal saw the ball go wide.

Despite City getting into the game it was Town who took the lead. Kyle Hammond laid the ball back to Tom Winter on the right corner of the box who then curled it up and down over the keeper into the left corner of the goal.

The home side came close to an equaliser with a square ball from Wes Burns going straight to Connor Lemonheigh Evans but the midfielder scuffed his shot into the hands of keeper Michael Crowe.

City came out the stronger team at the starting the second half and should have been level with Lemonheigh Evans having a free header at the back post post. Fortunately for Town his effort was straight at Crowe.

Town's first shot of the first came from Jack Marriott cutting inside from the right but he elected to shoot rather than pass and hit the ball straight at the keeper.

Town's goal continued to live a charmed life and in the 62nd minute there was another free back post header, again for Lemonheigh Evans but on this occasion he headed wide.

Amir Berkane got a let off from the referee with a clear foul as the last man only gaining him a booking with Town still struggling to get into the game.

Town's best chance of the half came from a counter attack with Matthew Clarke putting Marriott through on goal but the in-form striker hit the ball straight at the keeper.

With five minutes remaining Omar Sowumni put in a fantastic sliding challenge to prevent Burns from shooting inside the box.

Town played positive attacking football in the first half and got a deserved goal, but throughout the second half they rode their luck with Bristol City missing several good chances.

However, they go on to the fourth round and if they can reproduce their first half performance they can go far in this competition.

Centre-halves Sowumni and Clarke, who is still a schoolboy, deserve a lot of credit for their performances throughout the game with the pair preventing Town from conceding with vital tackles.

U18s: 1. Michael Crowe, 2. Kyle Hammond, 3. David October (c), 4. Amir Berkane, 5. Omar Sowumni, 6. Matthew Clarke, 7. Tom Winter, 8. Cory Galvin (14. Jack Willbye 46), 9. Jack Marriott, 10. Byron Lawrence, 11. Mark Timlin. Unused: 12. Jonathan Leddy, 15. Joe Robinson, 16. Taylor Hendry, 17. Cemal Ramadan.

Brill result!! Let's hope for a home tie in Round 4 so we can go and show our appreciation of their efforts!! Seems like the 'feel good' factor is running right through the club with the reserves result this afternoon.....long may it continue!!!

Sowumni & Clarke were imperious at the back. Particularly in the 1st half, with Bristol trying long balls or dinks over the top, only to see these two standing resolute. Apparently Clarke normally plays midfield, so his MOTM performance was even more enduring. It was a nice sight seeing these two big (probably the two tallest outfield players) defenders coming forward for corners.

Lawrence was industrious & tidy on the ball, of which he saw alot of. BCFC seemed to be content to shut him down quickly to stiffle creativity, but he was a very useful conduit between the back four & midfield.

Crowe made a couple of important stops at the beginning of the second half, following these up with a good confidant claiming catch under pressure.

Second half was more about soaking up & accepting pressure, but ITFC always looked good on the counter. Perhaps if Marriott had had more chances, he would not have elected to shoot when a pass to a more open team mate was the better option.

A good cup performance & great value for £3!

Sounds like a great result. What's impressive is that both TC & MM were in attendance at Bristol!! A long way to go for a youth game. Seems like they are considering the future already! Great sign! I expect a few of these lads to push on now; Laurence, Timlin, Marriott & Crowe are good young players.

Sounds like a great win, particularly holding out in the second half, well done lads. Add this to the reserves thumping Spurs and things are looking up. Now all we need is to send the Lions home, well beaten, on Saturday and we can all begin to feel a lot happier. COYB

Well done boys. Also a well done to MM and TC for making the trip down there. I'm getting happier and happier with how our season is going both with the first team and youth team . I would like to see a few of theses lads pushing for first team spots or at least the bench. I hope that some of them are training with the first team. I did see somewhere that there was a practice match between the squad does anyone know who was playing on each of the sides ( we're there any of these lads playing).

This link has Jack Marriott's goal scoring record at both under 21 and under 18 level. Very impressive: http://www.tmwmtt.com/sql/players/profile.phtml?academyview=Yes&fullname=Jack%20
