Redknapp: DJ Could Still Have QPR Future
Monday, 10th Dec 2012 13:39

QPR manager Harry Redknapp says on-loan striker DJ Campbell could still have a future at Loftus Road, despite his lack of involvement since he joined the Premier League’s bottom club in the summer of 2011. Campbell has made just three starts and nine sub appearances for the West London club since his £1.2 million move from Blackpool.

The 31-year-old’s three-month spell at Town ends on January 5th and, with his striking options currently limited due to injuries to Andy Johnson and Bobby Zamora, Redknapp says Campbell could have a future with the club he supported as a boy.

“DJ’s out on loan at the moment,” he told the Fulham Chronicle. “Of course, we’ll see how he goes, and if he works hard and continues to score, then you never know.”

Campbell, who has netted eight goals in 12 games for Town, says he remains in the dark regarding his situation, although he has previously ruled out a further loan, preferring to make a permanent move if he is to leave QPR with his contract up in the summer.

Speaking in an interview with talkSPORT, he said: “I don’t even know what I’m going to do, to be honest. QPR, that will have to wait until January. I can’t affect what’s going on at QPR. I’m an Ipswich player at the minute and all I’m thinking about is Ipswich at the minute and trying to do the best for them.

“When January comes and me an Harry sit down or when my representatives sit down with Harry or Ipswich or whatever, that’s when I’ll start thinking about things.

“At the moment, I’m just trying to focus on doing the best I can for Ipswich and when the time comes we’ll look at it then.

“But I’m enjoying myself, I’m enjoying my football, I love the lads and the gaffer’s been brilliant to me. We’ll see what happens in January.”

Town manager Mick McCarthy has confirmed that he would like to add Campbell to his staff on a permanent basis and on Saturday revealed that he had called Redknapp and left a message.

Meanwhile, Scunthorpe boss Brian Laws says he is hopeful that on-loan Blues striker Nathan Ellington will be fit for next week’s visit to Leyton Orient having missed Saturday’s 2-1 home loss to Bournemouth due to a calf strain.

He said: “We decided that it wasn’t worth the risk with him, because had we played him there was a chance that he could have been unavailable for much longer. As it is we are hopeful he will be back for next week.”
Ellington, who is with the League One side until January 5th, has so far made one start and two sub appearances for the Iron without scoring.

If QPR want to stay in the Prem , no way they should be even thinking of playing DJ. Harry knows he isn't ehat they need to stay up, expect one or two new forwards at Loftus Road in January. DJ will move, although not necessarily to us I fear, unless Mick can put his foot down with ME and stump up the cash.

well, it's not up to QPR, it's up to DJ, and hopefully he wants to stay with us!

Maybe Mick doesn't want DJ, maybe he is lining up someone else...

taylor15 - It is up to QPR, to a large extent, as Campbell is contracted to that club until the summer. If Harry wants him back in January, he's going.

We have Murphy, Chopra, Scotland, Taylor(injured) Ellington, Barnet, Murray and JET who is being worked on as a striker. IF DJ goes do we need anyone else? We've yet to see the best of Taylor but he seems a similar player to Cambell.

mikeybloo88 - disagree. From what we have seen from MMc so far (& why I'm really getting to like him) is that if he says "he's interested" in DJ Campbell, then rest assured he IS interested in DJ Campbell.

No bull, no flannel, just the truth.

I think (and hope) that the only thing Harry is interested in is getting some money from us for DJ. I doubt DJ is really in Harry's long term plans at 31.

I'm gonna pray that QPR's current strikers start banging in the goals so that Harry forgets about DJ !!!!

Yes for these comments read you cant have him on the cheap!! but i'm sure will will not pay over the odds, we still have other strikers and Taylor to come back next season. Good as DJ has been 3 of his goals have been pens.

Bluelad7: Harry has never had a long term plan at any of his management posts, one of the reasons he got the boot at spurs. Hopefully he has no interest in DJ

Makes no difference. This doesn't represent a change in circumstances as far as DJ is concerned.

Harry's been asked just because it's in the news that Mick wants to keep him, and he wasn't exactly likely to say "nah, you're fine, we don't want him" - especially when he's never even had a chance to see him play for QPR.

Marcus, it's now time for a bit of golf course diplomacy to make Harry see reason.

Harry has said that if QPR are not winning and off the bottom by the New Year there is no point in them spending money to try and stay up so I suppose if they aren't going to buy new players they may want to keep DJ until the end of the season as he is out of contract then and they won't have to pay him Premiership wages in the Championship. I hope I'm wrong as I would love him to stay.

I'm not just saying this because he's here, but if I was DJ I would be thinking why should I stay, yes he's under contract and yes they're his parent club but he's been used. Firstly Hughes goes for all the big reputations, Cisse, Zamora, Johnson Taarabt theres Mackie ahead of him too, so he has basically been relegated to 5th striker before he came here. Now as Qpr are not doing at all well, Zamora and Johnson are injured he could be lured back, I'm not sure if he can be recalled at any time but surely Qpr would have got him back straight away if he could make an impact on there season, because they need points. Surely as a player you would feel used if the only reason someone considers you back is because they're desperate even though that players had been treated badly previously, wrong in my opinion. Hope he stays where he will play regularly, he will be appreciated and will be seen as a valuable member of the team, hopefully we can get something done.

hes not named in there 25 man squad not sure when he can play for them

Harry's a wheeler dealer and is just upping the ante to get a better price for a player who will be a free agent in the summer. Rumour has it he'll go for Darren Bent or Remy from Marseille in January and only if he's unsuccessful is he likely to bring DJ back. Fortunately MM is also a shrewd operator and isn't likely to pay over the odds - it all depends how desperate the situation is for both clubs come January by which time I suspect that both sides will be on the up.

Edmunds5 added 16:35 - Dec 10
Him not being in their 25 man squad just emphasies my point, good comment @sheepdags, wouldnt be surprised if they went for Bent and as you say Mick seems the sort of manager who will how to work these things out.

muhrensleftfoot added 16:50 - Dec 10
I reckon Harry will keep him in Jan, because he needs goalscorers. Obviously can't recall him earlier, because he's not been named in their 25. Don't think Harry is a big fan of Darren Bent. He sold him when at Tottenham. Reckon we'll have to hope Chopra comes good, which is quite possible if MM plays him upfront alongside a big target like Murphy or Barnett

Edmunds5 added 17:16 - Dec 10
Yeah but I think he sold him at Tottenham because he had Keane, Defoe, Pavluychenko and possibly Berbatov though I cant remember if that was Martin Jol who had him. I think in Qpr's position Redknapp will get anyone who he thinks will get goals and keep them up and you would back someone like Bent to do that. Heard earlier this week he's interested in taking Robbie Keane or Landon Donavan in January when the MLS season finishes not sure if there is truth in that.

According to the news reports :

Robbie Keane is being chased by Premier League trio Aston Villa, QPR and Norwich who all want the LA Galaxy forward on loan this winter.

If true and not just newpaper talk lets hope he choose QPR - after all he and Harry have history

I think that QPR is too competitive for him to be starting regularly. Here, he starts every game - for a good reason. Obviously, we haven't seen much of Taylor so we can't compare with him but DJ has definitely looked the best of our attacking options of late. Murphy has also been improving now with the competition of Barnett which is great to see. Still a shame that some people are so fickle about Murphy - when he scores he's a great striker that we need to sign permanently; when he has a bad game, he's a poor striker and we need to send him back.

Mick has definitely made our attack stronger by making it competitive, and it's great to see Smith and Chambers working well at the back.

Like it or not DJ will be gone in January QPR obviously need him back, personally i'd love to see him stay. Now its time for Chopra to earn his keep alongside Murphy.
