McCarthy's Return to Molineux Special
Saturday, 29th Dec 2012 18:17

Town boss Mick McCarthy admitted that his return to Molineux was special, and not just because his current side beat his old club 2-0. The Wolves fans gave the Blues manager and his assistant Terry Connor a warm reception, both as they took to the field and as they returned down the tunnel after the final whistle.

McCarthy said: “It would be a lie if I said it was nothing special because it is. My last game here [a 5-1 home defeat to West Brom in February] I had to go out the back door and it was a really horrible day for me. I’ll never forget that.

“So, to have won and to have had the applause and ovation, I think it showed what most Wolves fans thought of me, rather than the minority that wouldn’t let me leave via the front door.

“And the ones that were singing for my [head] are doing it for StÃ¥le now. Be careful, you might get what you wish for.

“But that is a lasting memory for me now, being on the pitch, being applauded off. It was lovely. That is how I’d like to remember my time here, rather than anything else. Thank you to all them that did that for me today.”

Regarding the game itself, he was delighted with the performance: “I thought we were excellent. If Stan Cullis had been sat in the stand, he couldn’t have said that they deserved to win.

“The staunchest Wolves player, supporter, anybody wouldn’t get anywhere near saying we didn’t deserve that today on that performance.”

McCarthy says his game plan came off perfectly: “That’s what happens when you win, you can say that afterwards most times. It worked, I thought it was a good performance.

“They’ve worked so hard in the game and the players deserve credit for that because they put a real shift in.”

Wolves boss StÃ¥le Solbakken felt the display was similar to their last performance: “I think it was more or less the same story as against Peterborough. We started OK, not brilliant, but OK.

“And then after they scored their first goal, you could see it looked like an uphill battle from minute one after that.”

Solbakken wasn't sure about Kevin Doyle's early shout for a penalty: “I haven’t seen it but I struggle to see when Kevin Doyle is going to get a penalty at home this season. I think that’s the third or fourth time he has appealed for one this season.

“But that’s no excuse, we played for 80 minutes after that incident. And when you play so poorly, [you can’t] hang yourself up in that situation and hope that it would be different. He probably would have sent it over the bar today.”

McCarthy out!

Seriously, best I have felt since we beat Bristol City 6-0 in 2007. I like the fact that we are steadily improving rather than the boom of bust of the last two clowns (more bust of course). Lets just quietly keep climbing the table, keep our hand in, keep our feet on the ground, our noses to the grindstone and our ear to the ground as well......Err......

I am really pleased for you both Mick. It must be lovely to have that back door exit removed from your memory by an ovation from your former fans. What you went through at Molineux so PJ had to go through, from a minority of idiots, here. I think a lot of them are not sufficiently intelligent to realise that a football manager is also a human being with feelings. Well done to you both. COYB

Brilliant stuff. We now seem to have a manager who we can all have faith in. Two away wins in a week is exceptional stuff - particularly considering the terrible state we were in when MM took over. Well done to Mick and his management team - not only a good result, but am pleased for Mick today - a deserved ovation for a good manager who did a great job for Wolves.

When we win, we have hardly any comments! Come back from under your shells doubters. Great win today, and knew if we kept them quiet for the first 30 we would get something from the game. 10 points of the play offs again now with Watford winning, but we just have to keep winning. I am seriously so much more confident now we have manager who knows what he's doing. Hopefully for future success too. Big crowd for Tuesday now, coyb!

I'm like a dog with three dicks now, happy as a sand boy; what a day. I fancied this game and have said so in earlier comments, MM really is the Manager we needed. I like his approach to games, his tactics and his post game comments. He does exactly what he says on his tin. I know we will have a loss at some time and we do have some really hard games coming up, particularly in March; but I feel fairly confident. January will be the decider and how many of this team we can keep, as at the moment; it really is a good team performance. COYB!!!!!!!

Nthstd - I agree wolves fans certainly did treat him with respect but to be fair I think even if jewel came back to PR he would get respectful applause. MM was well respected there but at the end of his tenure many were openly against him. I expect some were applauding as an ironic protest against their current situation.

It is proving impossible to ignore the fact we must buy DJ Campbell in January. It's clearly working for both parties - I just hope a) QPR don't recall him and b) he's not just playing for one last pay deal.

It's unreal.... The way Miracle Mick has turned things around, and not just a little bit, is beyond anything I thought was possible. I really like to see the new year providing us with a little surprise, being DJ deciding that this is the club to be. Imagine that.

While on the subject, any thoughts on Chopra? As a sub, he's not scoring many goals in the 15 or so minutes he's given in a match nowadays. But still he pops up in the right places, just not sharp or lucky or both. Not that long ago, he was the 25 goals a season man... Should he replace DJ is he was to go back to QPR? Just wondering...

Have to say, that was about as confident and comfortable a Town victory as I've seen in a long time - they actually made it look very easy today. Wolves were poor admittedly, but I couldn't have asked for more from our boys today. With the possible exception of a few wasted chances and occasionally lacking the right final ball, they did everything right and got the result they deserved.

It goes to show how far Wolves have fallen since they sacked Mick McCarthy - and how much Ipswich have grown since appointing him.

Have to add, the crowd was fantastic today - and I speak for both clubs. Our fans were as good as you'd expect a winning side to be and chanted pretty much non-stop once we were 2-0 up; something which comes as a great refreshment for those among us that have been exposed to some really dire trips earlier in this campaign. But the Wolves fans were superb too - an attendance of 28,000 despite how poor a season they are having and how frustrated they all must be with what's happened to their club, their response to Mick McCarthy was superb and they even managed a bit of self-deprecating chanting at one point. Respect to them too.

All round, a very successful and enjoyable day out. Let's hope Villa can be the same...!

Really hope we can keep this team together after Jan. for me signing DJ is a must to keep this momentum going. Feels so good to be picking up points every week now! Well done Mick! Keep up the good work.

Would have been happy with point today... What a superb result. I know there are difficult games coming up but teams will be looking at us and know it won't be an easy game...like they would 2 months ago!
Can't see us agreeing a deal for DJ. Prob on bumper deal at QPR. Can see him going and another loan in til end of season to carry on banging them in.

Fantastic result - Wolves may be 17th but they have some very good players in Pennant, Johnson and E Blake; one of the wins of the season in my books. There's a great feeling in the air now, but my New Year's resolution is never to mention the ''play-offs'', because January is a hazardous time for the Town! Keeping DJ would be great but even if he leaves I have faith in MM's ability to sign a similar player to compliment Murphy (who's also playing well). I also like to think that MM will be able to sniff out the footballers from in amongst the has-beens and money-grabbers, unlike certain previous managers. Bring on January.

Really fantastic result if only brought in Super Mick a month earlier! Keeping same team together is working well its what have been crying out for ages stability square pegs in square holes. Marcus9 what rubbish are you on about? Henderson is showing his worth too give him a break. COYB!!!!

StowTractorBoy added 21:48 - Dec 29
Sorry Marcus9 but Henderson is a class above Loach and has helped in the revival of our fortunes. Loach cost us dearly against the likes of Cardiff and Wolves at home and never commanded his penalty area. You are of course entiltled to your opinion but I for one want Henderson to stay for the rest of the season. Great performance today making Wolves look poor - what a difference MM has made.

Great two away results and lets not forget this recent run of form under MM has been achieved with exactly the same squad as Jewell.
Great management MM you have made this town fan very happy and i look forward to a great 2013 and MM building his own team.
Its seems that Evans and Clegg have finally got it right?
Happy New Year.

Maybe we should bring back PJ as chief scout but do not let him any where near the ground !!!!!!!

Good point Tractastic although didn't MM bring in Orr? Anyway, he's got players in their best positions, he hasn't been chopping and changing and is getting the best out of the players that he inherited.
Also we still have Taylor to come. Phil, do you know what level of training he is on at the moment e.g. physio, stationary bike, weights, pool?
