Reo-Coker Talks Set to Begin
Tuesday, 8th Jan 2013 08:52

TWTD understands that Town are set to begin talks with midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker regarding an extension to his Blues contract later this week. The 28-year-old’s short-term deal is up after Saturday’s game at Cardiff.

Last week, manager Mick McCarthy confirmed that he was keen to keep the former Aston Villa, Bolton, West Ham and Wimbledon man at Portman Road: “I want him to stay but that’s down to him. We’ll speak to his agent. Nigel knows I want him to stay and hopefully he will.”

Reo-Coker has made nine starts and two sub appearances since joining the Blues in October.

Meanwhile, Blues legend Paul Mariner has been sacked from his job as head coach of MLS side Toronto FC. QPR's New Zealand international defender Ryan Nelsen is his replacement.

The "anti" brigade seem to have moved from Leadbitter to Reo Coker. Thank goodness MM makes the decisions and not those who put forward so much ill informed comment on here. Look how well Middlesborough are doing with Leadbitter in their team. Our loss is their gain. Well done Tony Mowbray.

Haven't seen him play, and find it odd how much MM wants him, but how all the fans do not.

The only thing we should be extending for Nigel Reo Choker is the barge pole for which we will NOT be touching him with.......

I beg to differ.

From reliable reports and what I saw on Saturday, he is improving. At one point he played a beautiful through ball towards a striker in acres of space (but unfortunately the striker ran off in the wrong direction). The man has tons of experience and is still only 28. He doesn't have a lot of pace, but neither did Bullard in his pomp.

NRC had no pre-season, nothing really until he joined us in October. Then he was out for a couple of weeks or so with a hamstring problem in November. There's still more to come in fitness.

We need a number of players in CM. In the more defensive role there's N'Daw and Hyam - the latter still rather raw. Then we have Drury and NRC. Options are good and NRC is a good one. Money is not *that* tight, having now lost a lot of the high earners.

Finally, we've seen that McCarthy doesn't hesitate to get rid of players he doesn't rate. Therefore he must rate NRC to want him to stay.

Here is a player that has undoubtebly got ability but I wonder if we are hoping for the Reo Cocker of 3 or 4 years ago. However I question his comitment. I witnessed his departure at Villa Park whwere he couldnt be bothered to applaud the Town fans let alone make any way over to them . He seemed content to go off with his arm around the Villa players. It said to me " i'm really premiership and not with this lot" . Personal opinion I know but it sticks in my throat.

Mick should be sacked on the spot if he wants to sign him.

I'm not entirely sure why everyone wants rid of him. He's got experience, he's the most talkative I've seen of anyone. So what if he's slowed down a little, if he helps the younger lads through the game then surely that's the type of experience we need in the squad. As long as his contract is smaller then I don't seen any problem with this signing.

Your numerous posts appear to me to be childish, in the extreme, as do your complete twisting of statements that other people make and your reference to Phil's opinion. There is a major difference between "Does he have?" and your "Mick has" and "misunderstood substitutions" and your "makes dodgy substitutions". It tells me that you do not understand what other people are talking about and your quotation of what Phil thinks tells me, quite conclusively, that you cannot think for yourself but are led by what people, who appear to be in authority, have to say and that you take that as gospel, probably because you are unable to form your own opinion. What naa said was meaningful and well thought out and I do take umbrage when people twist what I have said then quote it as gospel. If I have misunderstood you then I am sorry but I do not think I have.

I don't think he's really what we need right now, however I see no harm in extending his deal for the season and making a final decision (as much as it depends on us!) then. In other words worth a punt! What we really need is an energetic influential midfielder who can score a few goals!

If he signs it will have to be an "in Mick we trust".

I really cant see it with this guy, but if MM wants him then fair enough, think he knows a bit more than me.

Ive pretty much agreed with M.M. on everything so far but not on this one .
He's way too slow and I haven't really seen him do anything of note .
I hope he doesn't sign !

I can only think that MM thinks he can get the best out of him. A fit NRC is a quality player so assuming we can get that bit of weight off him and get him fully fit I think he could be essential in our promotion challenge next year.

Cotton Eyed Joe:
"No thanks. Out of the nine games he has started we have won 2 drew 2 and lost 5. That my friends is a very good reason to get rid".

Can you conclusively prove that 5 defeats were all his fault then? In case you had not noticed there are 10 other players on the pitch! It staggers me that certain players at Ipswich can do no wrong (even when they are playing poorly) and others can do nothing right. Grant Leadbitter was the same story! He seems to be doing pretty well with the Boro now but got rotten treatment by our 'fans'. It seems that unless the players run around like Kuqi (who also did very little positive work in his loan spell but ran around like a headless chicken) they are deemed poor players. I saw NRC against Villa last Saturday and I thought he played well. He kept things simple, passed well and rarely gave the ball away. He might not be a player who can't play 90 mins week in week out but he's a very useful player to have in the squad. Anyway, I think Mick knows better than all of us, don't you?

If Mick wants to sign him then fair enough....I gurantee that Mick has forgotten more about football than any of the wannabes on here saying no thanks.

I'm not saying Nige has set the world alight but what has he been tasked to do....break up play rather than create goals would be my guess.

Why anyone who supports the team would feel the need to select one player to be hammered is beyond me....unless its that marmite (you either love him or hate him) show pony Martin :)

Can anybody see a good reason to keep him? Perhaps he shows promise in training that we do not see. For me there are three negatives - he slows the game down, passes inconsistently and keeps Hyam out of the team. If we do sign him let's hope it's only until the end of the season.

Billblue.
I think your comments are not worth a reply but you are clearly very upset and I'm worried you might cry.

All I was trying to say is that we are on our best run of form for a very long time and to dig at the manager seems very unfair. My opinion only. I formed it myself by watching town and understanding the numbers and figures involving my club since the new manager took over. My comments may have been "childish in the extreme" but were merely a satirical reflection of what many post on this site. I don't take what anyone says as gospel but I feel Phil understands football and we agree about some things.

Being my own boss I don't tend to buy your "percieved to be in a position of power argument". I'm genuinely sorry for misquoting you but I do think you misunderstood the point I was trying to make. I hope we can be friends.

Of course, I hope so too, we both love the same team but obviously have different opinions.

What's there to talk about, other than where does he want to go next?

PutneyBlue added 15:44 - Jan 8
yes mikeyblue88 why go for NRC if we can get Wellens?

Hyam didn't exactly shine on Saturday, so we do need some more creative cover there.

as others have stated we dont really get results when he plays. Looks lazy and disinterested. hyam is not as good as so many recon but woukld prefer him to NRC and think of the wage savings
