Reo-Coker Talks Set to Begin
Tuesday, 8th Jan 2013 08:52

TWTD understands that Town are set to begin talks with midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker regarding an extension to his Blues contract later this week. The 28-year-old’s short-term deal is up after Saturday’s game at Cardiff.

Last week, manager Mick McCarthy confirmed that he was keen to keep the former Aston Villa, Bolton, West Ham and Wimbledon man at Portman Road: “I want him to stay but that’s down to him. We’ll speak to his agent. Nigel knows I want him to stay and hopefully he will.”

Reo-Coker has made nine starts and two sub appearances since joining the Blues in October.

Meanwhile, Blues legend Paul Mariner has been sacked from his job as head coach of MLS side Toronto FC. QPR's New Zealand international defender Ryan Nelsen is his replacement.

I'm not convinced that he wants to stay and hope that his agent finds a better offer. If he did stay then i can only hope that MM gets more out of him and he wants to be here and not just use Town as a stepping stone. Surely there are better, quicker hungrier midfielders out there!

I cannot comment because I havn't seen him play but to me he looks fat and sluggish, always has, and I have watched with incredulity each time Mick has picked him over better players and I have commented on this. Does Mick have a 'blind spot' here which goes hand in glove with his misunderstood substitutions? Mick, please read this board. Seventy five percent of supporters didn't want him to re sign when we ran the poll on this question. not all of those supporters can be wrong. COYB

Surprised by this, don't agree, but it's the managers decision in the end. Lets hope he's seen something we haven't yet?

Some people need to relax.

He was sort of match fitness when he joined, so it was going to take a bit of time to get match sharp and fit, but he was injured before getting back into his stride.

I agree he's not played brilliantly so far when he has played, but he has a wealth of experience at this level and Premiership level. A short term extension until the end of the season to give him one more chance to stay fit and prove his worth could be all Mick is discussing. And I don't think having him around a bit longer can do any harm, so long as Hyam still gets a good amount of football.

In Mick we trust, let's get behind him.

In all fairness, although he's been a bit of a shambles he's very experienced and must be offering a lot of advice to the youngsters. I wouldn't break the bank to keep him, but still a good player to have about!

Very dissapointed by this. I'd like to trust Mick's judgement, by NRC has been woeful and we have played much worse as a team whenever he has been on the pitch. I hope we're not keeping him on reputation alone.

"Every time he plays we have no creativity."

That's because he's a defensive midfielder. Defensive midfielders stop play and give the ball to attacking midfielders who create.

Not all defensive midfielders are Steven Gerrard.

We have no creative attacking midfielders. We have one who can run around alot but that's it.

Mick will sign a creative midfielder (If he hasn't already in the superb signing of McGoldrick!) in due course.

Reo Cocker will be a good long term signing. We will be fine. Please don'tdon't panic people.

(Sorry for the simple talk but that does seem to be the way to get through to certain people.)

wiggymcbigalowL: yes, this site would be very interesting if everyone posted: I agree with the manager after every story wouldn't it? What a pointless comment to make!

This site is designed specifically for us to have debates and put our opinions out. No-one here is saying their opinion is correct, it's just their opinion.

I have seen him start against Palace and Leicester - when everybody was bad and Brighton - err similar - I am not a big fan - especially with him and N Daw in that role
I suppose Mick wanted to - and has got a more solid Back Four and now looking at DM options - Hyam is our future , NDaw with AD and Reo Coker as a back up - I trust Mick and maybe when he is fit he will and should be a good player - I have not seen it and I am not sure many did at Bolton - Mick has done well since he got here and made afew good looking signings - as long as we don't pay silly wages and he understands he has to produce - coz he certainly hasn't so far - Lets find a Creative Mid next - sign him and then offer NRC a deal - Lets face it - His agent probably has on very 'inflated'- opinion of his player and I hope we don't pay him what he wants - get him on slimmers world for a start

He doesnt have the energy to play in a 4 man midfield. As the defensive midfielder in a 5 man midfied he would have time to read the game , protect the defence etc. MM plays 442 , i do not see the logic in extending his deal. We seem to lose more than we win with him in the side as we get over-run through the middle. Worrying.

@naa. Of course this is a place for us all to have our opinions and I'm having mine. I'm not saying NRC has set the world on fire but MM has. He took on a miserable team who were adrift at the bottom and has turned us into one of the leagues form teams (almost 2 points per game, playoff form).

People saying "Mick has a blind spot and makes dodgy substitutions..." to me sounds daft. Why is my comment pointless? Just because it happened to be positive? If that is the case then I'm very sorry. I will make sure I moan more in future to fit in with everyone else. If you ever meet Phil, ask him what he thinks about the constant moaning on this forum.

This is crazy. Why sign him? What has he ever done? If we sign him I'm going to self harm. McCarthy OUT.

wiggymcbigalow added 10:40 - Jan 8
As for DJ Campbell; I really hope we don't sign him. His all round game was average. All he did was score loads of goals.

wiggymcbigalow added 10:41 - Jan 8
As for Henderson. Rubbish. Send him back. McCarthy doesnt know what he's doing. Bring back Burley.

Come on big mick knows more about football then all us put together, if he can see something in NRC then in mick we trust......maybe when NRC gets a contract he will get better unlike bullard who when signed got worse! Stranger things have happened COYB

Interesting those comments that mention 'when he is fit' if he is not fit now after nine starts and two subs then I question if he ever will be! Might be worth a short term stay but really not sure might be even worse with a longer term contract.

Bluewein - I'm sure we all know what type of midfielder NRC is but he just brings negativity. His only option is to pass back to defenders to hoof upfield. Agree that we need a creative midfielder and to fund that we need to get rid of NRC. We already have better defensive midfielders.
Hope that's simple enough for you.
