Villa Linked With New Move for Cresswell
Tuesday, 21st May 2013 23:27

Aston Villa will renew their interest in Town left-back Aaron Cresswell this summer, according to tabloid reports.

Last July, Villa made an enquiry regarding Cresswell, 23, before eventually opting to add Middlesbrough left-back Joe Bennett to their squad.

Manager Paul Lambert is said to be keen to improve his backline during this close season and will reportedly again target Cresswell, who played every minute of Town's 2012/13 campaign.

If an offer is forthcoming it would come as no surprise to Blues boss Mick McCarthy, who said recently that he was expecting interest in the Liverpudlian, who he views as “a Premier League footballer in the making”.

Cresswell, who is contracted to the Blues until June 2015, joined Town from Tranmere at the end of his terms at Prenton Park in the summer of 2011.

A Football League tribunal set compensation at an initial £240,000 rising to £520,000 after various milestone clauses, while Rovers are entitled to 20% of the profit if Cresswell is sold.

Simply not true. No way Lambert will be back in for him. His full backs both had an excellent end to last season. This is done journalist trawling his archives. It may be someone but it won't be villa!!

Dirtyboy - Don't forget that player's contract these days are not worth the paper they are written on. If a player's head gets turned and wants to leave - he will and there is absolutely nothing the club can do about it. They have to sell well before their contract is up to get any decent money for them! The players have it all their way.

It'll cost them a fair wack. I can't see Town letting him go on the cheap.

Ten Million then we might consider. If we are to lose any of our best players we must get top dollar and paid upfront so we can reinvest.

I hope any talk of Bent is just banter.

If anyone actually thinks Bent would a) play in the championship b) take championship wages you must have lost it!

Be a big shame if this is true but how do we know he is going to leave if we have any chance of going up next season he's the type of player we need to help us do it.
I can't see MM letting him go. Did we turn down a 6.million bid from them last time?!
Villa are crap anyway not the team they were!!
What's happening about signing Stearman, Tabb & murphy it's all gone quiet on that front!!

i dont believe Villa firmed up the interest last year with an offer, if they did im sure it would of been no where near 6 million. They got Joe Bennett for 2.75million which I guess would be what they value cresswell at. Also I think that might be to tempting to turn down after all the money Evans has lost on transfers Im sure he'd be happy to recoup some and go with mings.

No! Villa can go do one, also I don't understand, Bennett was one of their bright sparks this season. I remember our asking price last season was 7 or 8 million, surely it has stayed the same or gone up. Cresswell is the next Leighton Baines

OK Cressy for Bent and Given . No I've not had a drink for a week now!

Well if we get decent money for him (if he goes which is debatable) then fine, personally I don't think defensively he was one of our best defenders last season - 1 cracking goal doesn't make you Premiership class!

PlanetBlue: Exactly the same as I was thinking . . . Cole Skuse, and then nothing. Phil TWTD - When is the action gonna start? Will it be June or July?

I am still reckon that Merlin the magician and top cat are champing at the bit. Go on Marcus. Loosen the reins.

I don't think we will have much to spend this summer. I don't like it but selling Cresswell could create some funds to potentially buy Stearman and another decent player and or pay signing on fees and wages for an out of contract player or two so if this were to happen I would not be too surprised. Trust MM to sort out any deals early on though with none of the faffing around and last minute upheaval and desperation we have had to endure in other recent pre-season windows.

I see Jerome Thomas has been released from West Brom, could be worth a look although I'm sure wage may be an issue.

No way..
If we are to make a serious promotion bid we need to keep the likes of Cresswell..plus we need to keep last season's back 4 together.

There will be speculation all Summer, both for players in and out! Cresswell is one of only a few saleable assets. Chopra and JET may leave, but other than Smith and possibly Drury, I am struggling to think of any other players in our current squad who are worth anything or will be wanted by others?

As for a trade for Bent ... really NOT going to happen. He must be on 60K a week!

Bent is a luxury player, a bit like JET, not a MM player.

Bent for Cressy I would be happy with! A goalscorer more important than a LB for us, when we have Tyrone Mings who can play at LB and looks a quality player.
