Town Confirm Murphy Deal
Friday, 7th Jun 2013 14:14

Town have confirmed that Daryl Murphy has agreed a two-year permanent deal at Portman Road. On Saturday, TWTD revealed that the 30-year-old, a veteran of three loan spells with the Blues, was close to a deal having been released by Celtic.

Murphy told the club site that he is happy to finally be a Town player on a full-time basis: “I’m delighted to be back.

"I had a chat with the manager at the end of the season and I’m pleased to get the deal done and finally be an Ipswich player on a permanent basis.

“It’s well documented that I love being at Ipswich and I made no secret that I wanted to return. The fans have been great with me every time I’ve been here and I think the club is really heading in the right direction.

“Tabby has joined too which is great to see and, like me, he saw the potential the side was showing last season and was keen to come back here.

“Now the focus is getting ready for the new season and I’m already looking forward to coming back for pre-season and meeting up with all the lads again.”

The Irishman, whose terms will start on July 1st when his contract at Parkhead formally ends, spent the whole of 2012/13 on loan at Portman Road, scoring seven goals in 33 starts and seven sub appearances.

Capped nine times by Ireland without scoring, striker or left midfielder Murphy made 32 starts and two sub appearances for Town during his another season-long loan during 2011/12, netting four goals.

Murphy, who said he was delighted to be back on an official club keek, was previously with the Blues during the second half of the 2009/10 season when he scored six goals in 18 appearances before moving from Sunderland to Celtic that summer.

While with hometown club Waterford United, Murphy spent several spells on trial at Portman Road during the 2004/05 campaign but eventually opted to join the Premier League Black Cats, then managed by current Town boss Mick McCarthy.

great news for the club a good player who wants to be here and can provide cover for the left mid position.
I personally think that should be it now up top even if chopra does go which hopefully will happen asap.
if mcgoldrick signs as promised we will have
mcgoldrick
marriot
taylor
murphy
nouble
Thats 5 for 2 positions

Agree with NoCanariesAllowed, we're pretty much there with the signings we've made already, that's when McGoldrick signs too. Taylor will be like a new signing, and so will Wordsworth who didn't play much since he picked up that injury. If we can find that winger, preferably a left winger, then we are pretty much there. Looking real forward to next season with MM and TC at the helm!

Cookra shush, you didn't fare well first time, and it would seem that your opinion is not shared by the vast majority, so just quietly withdraw and save further negatives.
I would say another vital piece of the Puzzle, not a corner piece but definitely an edge at least!

More stability. Good news. We finally have a manager that players want to work for. Stearman would be great, but can MM swing it? Here's hoping...

Remember, we will also be getting Murphy before pre-season, where he can get a fully settled and fit build-up under his belt which he has previously lacked on his two previous spells.
Very good signing.
Now for a versatile RB/CB ala Stearman, a proper good left-winger who can create and cross, and a GK to fight it out with Loach.

It's not all about "young hungry" forwards fallling over each other in their lust for goals, it's about a blend of styles which give adaptability for different situations. Every team needs a Murphy type frontman and now we've got ours. Excellent news.

Handy player to have on the books versatile and useful when defending corners. Just hope we see the Murphy playing with determination and not the laid back version.

FOUR players signed already!! Good news. Yet another who wants to play for us and more importantly MM. Personally, I don;t think Murphy scores enough, but as others point out he certainly has a presence about him and is strong, adding much needed 'bustling' up front. Agree with Garv that another striker is probably required, regardless of whether Chopra leaves - as clearly he's not wanted by the manager.

Fantastic news! Great to see a bit of continuity in the team. Tabb and Murphy signed up is a real positive. Now for Stearman and one or two creative midfielders

Great News! Thought he did really well last season with whoever he played next to, he's not a 20 goal a season striker but he will certainly help some one else be. Welcome back Daryl!

The squad is being gradually built around those who were here last season (apart from Skuse)- continuity is a mark of the majority of successful Championship sides. You just get the feeling that MM is quietly getting everything in place (presumably 1 or 2 still to come in- shortly?) and if the squad settles quickly (+ no catch up required for a change) we could be in for a treat of a season.

Good news, great addition, very much in the walters/scowcroft mould. Both of those the fans never really appreciated. Hopefully they will with Daryl.

Not the most gifted of players but always gives 100% and decent target man.

But I think we need more up front than Murphy and McGoldrick with Noble, I suppose its all about whether we can get rid of that waste of space Chopra. I think we might struggle on that count especially as he's being his usual self (tw*t!).

Excellent signing, very underrated. It's not all about goals and assists. Movement and presence are also vital in a decent centre forward and Daryl Murphy has that. Plus a far better professional than Michael Chopra or Jay Emmanuel-Thomas.

franco di santo would be brilliant up front with murphy and he's been released by wigan. doubt he would go to us though :/

I obviously don't see what you lit do here. If we sign mcgoldrick why do we need murphy?
He just hasn't impressed me or anyone I know and sit around in the bobby Robson stand.

I think with the signing of Daryl he brings a certain style to the front and that is his physical aspect, he can win the ball in the air and hold the ball to bring others into play, ok his scoring could be better but he gives us an outlet.

muhrensleftfoot/ theres just 1 major flaw with ur idea of paying off chopra so his wages aren't taken into account in the ffp? have you not thought that ne pay off made to chopra would have to be taken into account too. and lets be honest, it would probably mean paying the whole of his contract money up for him to agree to go, so wed be no better off.

Not too excited but he'll be a decent squad player. For me he lacks pace and is not very good in the air for such a tall guy and can't score goals. If he's on £3-4k a week then great. Priority has to be some pace and creativity as this is what gets you to the PL eg Crystal Palace. Also need to sign Stearman as we are short at the back..... Come on MM two pacey wingers and a creative midfielder asap and hopefully McGoldrick will be a regular scorer if this is addressed.
Murphy will give us a long ball option but hopefully this will be used sparingly

A versatile and strong addition to the squad, and a player who wants to be at the club - his wages now will be much less than the reported 25k a week he was said to be picking up at Celtic.

Perhaps we could agree with Chopra that he needn't pay back the money he owes the club if he walks away from his contract now - he certainly does not justify his weekly wage on the performances of the last season or so.

Also, Taylor is being considered by most as a striker, but didn't Jewell use him as an attacking RM? I agree it will be like having a new signing but do we know his best position yet?

Wrong ^^. Murphy can and will add to the goal tally, which is generally the consensus for what we all want. He works hard, is dependable and like most of the squad has flourished under MM & TC. I would have been disappointed to see one of last season's positives be forgotten.
