Town Confirm Murphy Deal
Friday, 7th Jun 2013 14:14

Town have confirmed that Daryl Murphy has agreed a two-year permanent deal at Portman Road. On Saturday, TWTD revealed that the 30-year-old, a veteran of three loan spells with the Blues, was close to a deal having been released by Celtic.

Murphy told the club site that he is happy to finally be a Town player on a full-time basis: “I’m delighted to be back.

"I had a chat with the manager at the end of the season and I’m pleased to get the deal done and finally be an Ipswich player on a permanent basis.

“It’s well documented that I love being at Ipswich and I made no secret that I wanted to return. The fans have been great with me every time I’ve been here and I think the club is really heading in the right direction.

“Tabby has joined too which is great to see and, like me, he saw the potential the side was showing last season and was keen to come back here.

“Now the focus is getting ready for the new season and I’m already looking forward to coming back for pre-season and meeting up with all the lads again.”

The Irishman, whose terms will start on July 1st when his contract at Parkhead formally ends, spent the whole of 2012/13 on loan at Portman Road, scoring seven goals in 33 starts and seven sub appearances.

Capped nine times by Ireland without scoring, striker or left midfielder Murphy made 32 starts and two sub appearances for Town during his another season-long loan during 2011/12, netting four goals.

Murphy, who said he was delighted to be back on an official club keek, was previously with the Blues during the second half of the 2009/10 season when he scored six goals in 18 appearances before moving from Sunderland to Celtic that summer.

While with hometown club Waterford United, Murphy spent several spells on trial at Portman Road during the 2004/05 campaign but eventually opted to join the Premier League Black Cats, then managed by current Town boss Mick McCarthy.

No matter the big - ups on here. He is not the type of player we should be signing. We have got nowhere near the play offs with him in the team over the past three seasons so maybe one of you can tell me why it will be any different next season

Anybody not happy with this knows nothing about football or doesnt actually go to the games.
Murphs is one of the most improved players under Mick and Terry.
Rarely beaten in the air, great option from the bench, holds the ball up well and Big Frank will learn a lot from him.If he can contribute a few goals here and there its a bonus.Murphy is a team player,Mick is building a team.

@thebeat what's the point of signing bench players? I have a season ticket and all around me in the bobby Robson upper think the same as me.... Waste of time , money and resource.
He isn't what we should be looking for. It's like given Andy drury an extension

@cookra where i stand in the SBR lower everyone appreciates his work ethic and his nouse. i wasnt saying sign him as a sub as im sure he'll get plenty of game time, but footballs not just about 11 men anymore its a squad game.
Murphy will help Nouble blossom and is a great target man.
He was great in the 2nd half of last season in a team that on the form guide since Mick took over were top 6 in the division.
It makes sense to sign part of that team permanently.

A good signing. I have always been in favour of promoting our own youth, but I recognise that we need a couple of older players as well. That means in terms of forwards that we have Murphy, Chopra, Nouble, Taylor, McGoldrick and Marriott which ought to be enough interns of both quantity and quality. With Wordsworth and Skuse in midfield that is looking good. It is welcome that Smith and Hyam are on extended deals. We need Stearman to sign plus a couple of wide midfielders and that should be the job nearly done.

Of course I forgot JET. I hope that he is still with us next year as he is one of the few players ina hard working side who can do something different.

Happy about this. The squad needs stability so here's hoping we can pull off a deal for stearman too although that deal is deathly silent at the moment so looks off the table.

Very quiet on the keeper front too given we need to sign two!

My area in SBR think Murphy well worth his place !!! As for more signings MM goes about it without fuss and only tells when job done . This is best as it keeps his options open and other clubs out of contention . Good team being built and a good season to come .

Walberswick- your'e right. But I think we'll be promoted. Sad that so many on here are interested in points at all cost. Mick will have us playing one dimensional hoof ball. Then get another 'shot' at the prem and fail miserably. Promoted 13/14, down 14/15. Mick hasn't got the talent for PL. Proven failure..
