Wigan Latest Club Linked With Cresswell Sunday, 30th Jun 2013 11:01 Recently relegated Wigan Athletic are the latest club reported to be showing interest in Town left-back Aaron Cresswell. According to one of this morning’s tabloids, the Latics see the 23-year-old as a potential replacement for Honduran Maynor Figueroa, who has joined Hull City.
Wigan have, however, already added another left-back, Blackpool's Stephen Crainey, to their squad so may no longer be in the market for a left-sided full-back.
Already this summer Cresswell has been mentioned in connection with Southampton, Aston Villa, Fulham and Crystal Palace, although long-time admirers Villa have since added another left-back, Spaniard Antonio Luna, to their squad.
Interest in Cresswell will come as no surprise to Town manager Mick McCarthy, who said that he was expecting it towards the end of the season. The Blues boss said he views the defender as “a Premier League footballer in the making”.
While Town will be looking for rather more for Cresswell, perhaps as much as £5 million, an offer in excess of £3 million may well be enough to tempt Town to sell with McCarthy using the cash to strengthen his squad for the season ahead.
The left-back, who is contracted to the Blues until June 2015, joined Town from Tranmere at the end of his terms at Prenton Park in the summer of 2011.
Rovers are entitled to 20% of the profit Town would make on the £420,000 they paid for Cresswell if he is sold. A Football League tribunal set a compensation figure of an initial £240,000 plus milestone clauses with only a £100,000 payment on promotion to the Premier League not triggered.

can't see him being interested in a move there, bit of a sideways step

It would be disappointing if Cresswell left, unless of course it's for £4-5M and MM is allowed to spend all of it on new players. If not, and the money is only going to be recycled into the PR coffers, then pointless.

Now, there's lazy journalism and then there's this. Wigan sign a replacement left back and now they're linked with another. Which idiot dreamt that up to pen in his bobbins newspaper!?

We may need to sell him due to the fair play rules to pay the wages of the staff we already have and be able to pick up a couple more players on frees or low fees. It isn't Championship Manager.

No truth behind this what so ever...

I cant see the player leaving Town for any other Club other than a PL one. It would make sense to do so ....But then JET is considering a move down to league one, so anything's possible I s'ppose!

Is it a step too far to think that he could go to Everton if Baines went to Man Utd? Not necessarily as first choice left back but as cover?

NOT FOR SALE! | | |

if you can repeatedly sell players for 10 times what they cost you then you won't have too much to worry about but only sell him for the right price (£4.5 million ?)

No way would he go to Wigan, as others have said it would be a sideways step. Could possibly see him go to Everton as he is a scouser, although a red. Hoping he will stay but whatever happens he has been a great player for us these last couple of seasons.

Several rumours on this excellent website turnout to have a modicum of truth even if they dont materialise.Wigan is nearer his home afterall. Having said this I would be very disappointed if we had to start unloading our best players as we had to under JR,especially as MR S said that having ME would alleviate the need for this.

Surely he would want a move to the prem if he was going to leave?

I think his agent maybe busy putting him out there the amount of clubs he's linked to. I think we have to accept he will be on his way however it may work out better for the club, the more clubs he is linked to the more likelihood a bidding war occurs.

seasider sheepshanks said losts of things during his time here and personally i would not trust him as far as you can throw him. important to keep cresswell if we can but if a 4 million bid comes in i think it wont be micks decision anymore

Cresswell has recently bought a house in Ipswich. ITFC are on the way up . . . Wigan are on the way down. I don't think that there is any truth in this. COYB!!

Smithy- moving to a club to play European football is not a sideways step.
