Swap Deal Complete
Monday, 8th Jul 2013 15:13

Town and Bristol City have completed the deal which sees Jay Emmanuel-Thomas move to Ashton Gate and winger Paul Anderson join the Blues. Both players have signed two-year contracts with their new clubs.

Anderson started his career as a youth player with West Brom, before moving on to Hull City and then Liverpool in November 2005.

The 24-year-old spent time on loan at Swansea and Nottingham Forest — when he was linked with a move to the Blues - while with the Reds, before making the switch to the City Ground permanent in the summer of 2009 for £250,000.

The 5ft 9in tall former England U19 international moved on to Bristol City last summer, signing a two-year deal. He made 19 starts and 11 sub appearances for the Robins during their 2012/13 relegation campaign, scoring three goals.

The clubs are understood to have thrashed out a deal over the weekend which will see Town settle the remaining year on Emmanuel-Thomas’s contract.

The Blues are said to have been looking for a player plus cash arrangement — having paid in excess of £1 million for Emmanuel-Thomas when he signed from Arsenal — but have had to settle for just the player swap.

The 22-year-old midfielder played for Robins boss Sean O'Driscoll on loan at Doncaster and was initially targeted as a loan signing back in January.

Londoner Emmanuel-Thomas joined the Blues from the Gunners in July 2011 and made 43 starts and 32 sub appearances, scoring nine goals.

Blue machines. Paying jets contract up is bo different than having paid a dee for anderson. So just means weve used part of transfer budget. Not a witty name. We havent paid him 1.5m. That was what we paid arsenal to sign him, not his yearly salary. Would guess it nearer 500,000 if we paid it up in full, which again, i doubt.

itfcserbia - that graph says to me you need to play anything above 50% of your potential to be talented! I'd like to think it was much higher than that but JET definitely never got close to showing even half of his potential!

Welcome Anderson! Squad is shaping up really nicely. All over the park there are interesting options and battles for positions.

Four more players and we're done!

Only slight concern for me us the balance in central midfield, other than that, delighted to date.

This could turn out to be a great deal for Town. Glad to see JET gone & this deal not lingering on until the season started.

Delighted we got Anderson & no doubt MM is too, welcome to ITFC. COYB!!

Sorry to be negative but this is just one inconsistent winger for another (plus a hefty loss). Move on...

Thanks for a very critical response to a genuine question. I thought the point of getting rid of high earners is to free up funds. Seems we haven't done that as we spent money paying off yet another contract. Which disappoints me.

Why the hatred towards the name? Least I support Ipswich unlike some on here.

how have I shown ne hatred towards the name? think you've read something into my post that simply isn't there. and it wasn't a critical response neither. was just pointing out that paying jet off, which many clubs do(eg Liverpool re a. carrrolls transfer to w.ham), is no different than had we paid a transfer fee for Anderson. I presume you wouldn't have criticised the club had we paid , say, 500,000 for Anderson? so the funds ur talking about are still in place. to be fair i think youll find every1 on here supports Ipswich, tho would have to say there are some who make you wonder why.

Unfortunately JET will leave us having not fulfilled his undoubted potential.
The word lazy springs to mind as I can recall him at pre-season at luton, going through the motions and sneaking a breather as other players went through rigorous warm ups.
In essence Anderson has cost us a years salary, which I guess would be around the £500k mark.
Seems like once again a player is quids in and gets rewarded for poor performances.
We need players that give 100% for the cause and for this reason I am happy with the deal.

blues 1, I hadn't realised there was someone on here called 'Not a witty name'. Thoguht it was a dig. Apologies. I never criticised the decision to pay him off, just wondered how it affected us with regrads to FFP. Considering we were looking for Bristol to give us Anderson and cash for JET I do think the fact we ended up swapping for nothing was poor on our part.

blue machines apology unnecessary, just a misunderstanding. on ur last point tho, yes, if we were looking for money plus Anderson its a bit disappointing we ended up with a straight swap, but, for 1, theres no proof that we were asking for money, that's just speculation. and 2. tho disappointing if the case, I think we had to make the choice of either being stuck with jet or getting the player we wanted, in which case I believe mm made the right decision. unfortunately jet wouldn't imo have ever been any better while here.

Good Luck Jet, pity we never saw you reach your potential.
And welcome Mr Anderson, after reading Harry's blog, I am looking forward to see you in a Town shirt.
