McCarthy: Good Start from Anderson
Friday, 12th Jul 2013 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy was pleased with new signing Paul Anderson’s first performance in a Town shirt at Crawley on Wednesday. The former Bristol City man created Daryl Murphy’s goal in the Blues’ 2-1 victory over the League One side.

McCarthy says he was delighted to have added the 24-year-old to his squad: “Very much so. He can play both wings. I thought he started really well, created the goal for us as well.

“He drifts down the middle and is a handful when he does that. He’s a clever player. Pleased with him, really delighted to get another one in.”

The Blues boss has been an admirer of Anderson since before he moved from Hull City to Liverpool in January 2006 when only 17 years old: “We’ve looked at him before, but then, of course, he’s been at Nottingham Forest since and ended up at Bristol City.

"He’s somebody I’ve always liked. It was his first game for us, but I’m pleased with him.”

McCarthy says it wasn’t a difficult decision to allow Jay Emmanuel-Thomas to move to Bristol City as part of the same deal, but admits that the 22-year-old could make him regret doing so: “I made him available at the end of the season, so it was hardly a difficult one.

“I wish him well, I thought it was a good swap for me, a winger that plays like Paul Anderson, and I just don’t think Jay’s fulfilled all his potential at our place.

“He’s one of them, it’s always scary letting somebody like him go because he might [fulfil his potential] elsewhere. We’ll see.”

Mick. Honest and up front as always. Very refreshing and really has earned lots I if respect from the Town faithful. Even those not so keen to begin with.

"He can play both wings." That may prove relevant as the season progresses.

Really pleased with this signing, as it looks like Anderson will definitely fit in with our tactical model. The contrast with last season's transfer dealings - this year there have been no loanees, no big transfer fees, and everyone being purchased with a clear idea as to their place/role on the team - is remarkable.

Is anyone else feeling as concerned about next season as me? With Cresswell and Hewitt at full back and Doherty and Anderson on the wings we are in real danger of playing attacking football, stretching defences and getting crosses into the box! I bet Murphy and McGoldrick are worried about their fitness as no doubt they will be a bit more involved in matches as will Wordsworth who will presumably be gutted to be repeatedly breaking forwards late into the box for headers and tap ins.....just a thought :)

Trying to think what our formation will be next year. Do we go with 3 centre midfielders with two wingers and a lone striker or will it be a straight 4 in midfield with 2 strikers? It would be hard to pick a midfield 4 from Skuse, Hyam, Tabb, Edwards and Anderson. Then there's 1 or 2 places up for grabs between Nouble, Murphy, McGoldrick, Taylor and (hopefully not) Chopra.

It's been a while since we've had this many options available to us and competition for places!

Michael11 - don't worry, I forgot about Taylor! I think 442 will be it knowing MM and I hope Taylor and Wordsworth and the wingers will be big players in this. Lets play some football!

Now we have Anderson I'd be very surprised if Edwards does anything more than come off the bench in his last season. Scuse, Hyam & Wordsworth to contest the middle two with Tabb to remain on the L:eft Although Mick wants back up for the defence if they perform like they did the second half of last season all he really wants now are Goals!!!!!

Honest of MM to admit JET might do it elsewhere. Won't be so bad of Anderson does the stuff.
