Town Closing in on Doherty Signing
Friday, 12th Jul 2013 20:32

TWTD understands that Town are close to completing the signing of Waterford United winger Jack Doherty. The 18-year-old came on as a half-time sub this evening as the Airtricity First Division side drew 0-0 with Mervue at home.

We understand a deal is all but agreed between the clubs with Town set to pay an initial fee in the region of £50,000 plus further cash after Doherty hits appearance milestones. The move could be confirmed as soon as Monday with Doherty becoming Mick McCarthy's seventh signing of the summer.

As revealed a fortnight ago, Doherty joined the Blues for their pre-season training camp at Carton House in Kildare.

The winger, who also spent time training with the Town academy during Roy Keane’s time in charge of the club, subsequently tweeted that he had enjoyed his stint with the squad: “Loved it here, great bunch of lads, Ipswich. Good session [this] morning.”

Born in Clonmel, Doherty came through the youth system at Waterford and was promoted to the first team squad in August 2011. Since then he has established himself as a regular member of the senior squad.

Capped by Ireland Schools, Doherty was called up to an Ireland U19 squad for a training camp in Spain in March.

Good news. Nice to see us building a future as well as a present.

With young Doherty, following Anderson, we've now got 2 generations of wingers in place!
The squad is being built nice and early for Aug 3, I can see a good start, and season, coming on.

One recognisable difference between MM and Jewell, was the age of the signings, It's good Mick is signing a couple of younger players in Anderson and now Doherty! When Jewell was in charge we were getting 27-8 year olds.

I think we paid about 1.5 Million for Lee Martin, if so we could get 30 players like this for the same cost. Just the one is a much better idea for me! Well worth a go and he will want it I'm sure. Good stuff!

@tcannITFC I'll slate Jewell as much as the next guy, but he was the one to bring Cresswell and Hewitt to the club. Both young players.

@M4rkyboy1 Yeh to be fair he did, but he still got Drury who is a good player but he was 27 when we signed him!

I think if people are expecting to find 2 good wingers from these signings they will be sadly dissapointed , maybe MM can mould them into the team as hard working pros but if you are expecting anything better than lee martin or jet then think again

Will be interesting to see how he adapts and how Mick plans to use him. Will he be a regular, or will we see him more regurarly in a few years? Excited about this one
