Jackett: Stearman Staying
Friday, 19th Jul 2013 11:26

Wolves boss Kenny Jackett says former Blues loanee Richard Stearman has no plans to leave the League One club. The Blues have repeatedly been linked with a move for the 25-year-old this summer after his impressive spell during the second half of last season.

However, Jackett says Stearman wants to stay at Molineux: “He hasn’t intimated to me that he wants to leave. He’s committed to Wolves, definitely.”

A Blues approach for Stearman would now appear less likely anyway with former Manchester United man Frederic Veseli — like Stearman a right-back or centre-half - close to being added to the squad.

Town are also in talks with Tottenham regarding the season-long loan of South African central defender Bongali Khumalo, while ex-Blue Titus Bramble is currently on trial at Portman Road.

Meanwhile, Wolves midfielder Karl Henry, a player Mick McCarthy is understood to rate very highly and who has been linked with Town on a number of occasions, has been mentioned in connection with a move to QPR.

Henry is one of four senior players Jackett has transfer-listed and not given squad numbers for the season ahead. The others are Stephen Ward - who has also repeatedly been linked with Town this summer - Jamie O'Hara and Roger Johnson.

Elsewhere, we understand that contrary to reports last night, Town aren’t amongst the clubs chasing Hull City winger Cameron Stewart.

did great on loan for us and can play right back but I think he is primarily a centre back and due to the great partnership built up by Chambo and tommy wasnt ever gonna get in there. He was clearly better defensively but I reckon veseli and hewitt are better going forward, may still be more to run on this one tho!!!

This quote from Jackett make me more sure than ever, that Stearman will not be playing for Wolves come September. There are far more definitive words that can be used when confirming that a player is not going to be sold. Stearman will not want to be playing league 1 football (his international aspirations at 25 will certainly be a factor) and Wolves cannot justify his wages at that level.
The questions are, can we afford his wage demands and are we prepared to pay transfer fee at all this summer? I had felt that Mick was playing a shrewd game of Mexican standoff on this one, in the hope Wolves would let him go on a free to get him off their wage bill. Maybe Wolves thought we would be prepared to pay a fee to get a player they knew Mick really wanted and this comment from Jackett has come now because we are signing alternative defenders & he needs to remind other Championship teams/managers that Stearman is still at Wolves & a possible target.
I still hope we get him (even on a season long loan on transfer deadline day) as I think he is an excellent defender. I like Hewitt, but he is not quite ready yet & is stronger going forward than defensively. I don't know how good Veseli is as a right back, but again he is young & inexperienced at this point. Stearman would also offer great cover at centre half.
I'm really excited by the signings if young, quick, attack minded skillful players, but successful sides are also built on having goid strong solid defences & Stearman certainly brings those qualities. Having a mix of both in your squad is what can get you promoted. Here's hoping that Berra & Stearman are still serious targets for Mick.
