McGoldrick: More to My Game Than Goals Friday, 16th Aug 2013 13:57 David McGoldrick may still be seeking his first goal of the new season but believes he will not have long to wait before he breaks his duck.
And even if he has to wait longer than he would like McGoldrick is quick to point out that he has plenty of other attributes to offer the side.
He said: “Whether we like it or not strikers are judged on goals but I like to think I bring more to the party. I like to contribute with assists and helping to bring other players into play.
“I know I have to chip in with goals but my all-round game and helping out team-mates is also important to me. The manager expects you to do what he wants you to do but other than that he lets me go and create and get on the ball.
“He doesn’t ever shout at me for trying to get on the ball — he shouts if I don’t try to get on the ball, if I’m not trying to get the ball to feet and turning to lay people in. He encourages me to do that and I know if I’m doing it I can keep him happy.”
Goals were in short supply as Town safely negotiated their Championship survival last season and McGoldrick believes it will be less of a struggle in the new campaign.
He added: “The gaffer has stressed how important it is that everyone chips in. Tommy Smith came up with a great header against Millwall and we’ve got to get the midfielders, and obviously the strikers, scoring too.
“We’ve had two league games and we’ve scored four goals — it doesn’t matter that two of them were own goals because they hit the back of the net and they all count. Whatever way you look at it a goal’s a goal.”

I'll no doubt get slated for being negative, but I'm still a little worried about how McGoldrick will get on this season. He's a very technical player, is gifted and clearly can score goals. However, I think he needs a good amount of service if he's going to get into double figures and beyond. In all 3 games so far this season, he's spent too much time out on the wing or dropping deep into midfield for me. Being a good all-round player is all very well, but it's in the box where I want to see him.

He summed it up perfectly at the end - a goal's a goal. A lot of people still calling for a "20-goal-a-season man", when it's really not necessary. I know that I for one would prefer a team where the strikers get six or seven each, the midfield pop up with hopefully two or three each, and a few from centre backs from set pieces, as opposed to a team that relies too heavily on one man and spends the whole game trying to set him up. All that would lead to is a complete lack of strategy should the guy get injured. Especially can't believe people are still calling for Billy Sharp in particular, thought we'd moved on from him ages ago.

Sam, think that ratio of goals would probably get us relegated, however I get your point. I would still like to see our two main strikers get at least 15 goals apiece if we are to be considered playoff contenders, with midfield aiming for 5-10 goals each. I don't care who scores them but someone e.g McGoldrick has got to take responsibility and start having a go at goal. It's no good passing it back and forth if theres no shot at the end of it.

It's certainly not pace, but very good on the ball. Not the prolific goal scorer we need.

Letchworth, yeah we definitely need more goals than that, I was just splitting up the roughly 20 goals that fans for some reason feel we should be relying on an individual for.
