Sharp Loan Link Unlikely
Wednesday, 4th Sep 2013 09:35

Town, Leeds, Doncaster, Reading and Sheffield Wednesday are all in the running to sign Southampton striker Billy Sharp on loan, according to some of this morning’s tabloids. Football League clubs are able to sign players on short-term loans of up to 93 days from next Tuesday.

Rumours claiming the Blues are interested in loaning the 27-year-old have been circulating for the last week or so, but appear to have little foundation with manager Mick McCarthy repeatedly having said he is not currently looking to add to his senior squad: “We’ve done our business.”

In addition, the Saints are reported to want Sharp’s destination club to pay his wages — reportedly £20,000 a week — in full, a figure which would be well beyond what the Blues would be willing to pay.

Sharp, who spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, was a Town target during Paul Jewell’s time as manager back in the summer of 2011 while a Doncaster player.

The Portman Road crowd famously applauded Sharp’s goal in Rovers’ 3-2 victory over the Blues the following November shortly after the death of his new-born son Luey.

Nakhi Wells from Bradford.... Oh sorry that would have shown a little ambition

The question is why has ME drawn a veil over our spending now?...and not taking that silly FFP rules into consideration which clearly some other teams haven't, why was he giving Paul Jewell money to spend only a year plus ago when surely we must have been 70M+ in debt then.

Mick McCarthy has came in at a good/bad time. Good because we need him, but bad because Evans backed Keane and Jewell. He's come to realise that he can't keep blasting all this money otherwise we will turn into Coventry or Portsmouth. I know MM will spend it wisely unlike the other two, but MM must show how good of a manager he is. Then hopefully Evans will put faith in him and trust him. It's going to take a few years!

I think what many people are over-looking is that we are looking at next season, the squad doesnt need to be perfect this season, we just need a structure. Mick has done superby well in building a firm base and he's done a large part of the furnishing too. We have some good strikers, Mcgoldrick is clearly a superb talent. We can do our job this season with what we have and though id love another striker, its not the end of the world if we dont get one. Besides, theres always more to MM's plan and we all know that! There's a reason he thinks we are done. IN MICK WE TRUST! COYB!!!

Erm... I see JET scored again tonight for Bristol City. 5 this season now I believe (3 league, 1 league cup, 1 JPT).

Chicago_Blue:
League one is so different to the championship. JET has had so many opportunities at Town. O'Driscoll plays him in a free role behind the striker, for us there wasn't a free role in a 4-4-2. He will shine in that league as when he can be bothered he's got the talent, but I for one will not be thinking 'what if' unlike a few years ago when we let go of Rhodes.

The annoying thing for me is he had two poor managers in Keane and Jewell, they both had stinking first full seasons in charge yet Evans still gave them a shedload to spend the following summer.
Mick had a great 6 months where we produced play off form with a team that was rock bottom when he took over yet he wont back him at all because he thinks it will happen again.
Wakey wakey Marcus you know Mick wont waste it, we arent asking a lot, just a decent striker will do for now and if we arent up there come January then you can penny pinch.

Considering wages etc for a striker- Sam Baldock from Bristol City is the answer. Scored more goals than even JET so far this season and is getting better and better by the month.

Could be well worth a go in the Jan transfer market. Though Bristol City are scoring plenty- they are conceding plenty too. Look unlikely to make a promotion push this season.

Has International experience too in the U-20's.

He's only 5ft 7- but has a real eye for goal. Some of his long range efforts have been screamers. And his wages will be so much less than Sharp/Doyle

luke38 i dont think there is that much difference between the championship and league 1 really.
It comes down to systems and mick likes a ridgid 442 whereas o drisscoll likes a 4231 where the attacking 4 if you like are fluid and creative.
this is the football JET has been brought up on and how he likes to play the game and you wont change him now.
i think if bristol were in the championship at the mo playing the system they are they would still be doing ok and JET would still be scoring.
when mick came in he was correct to tighten things up but at some point we will need to be a little bit more expansive but mick prob relises this already and hopefully has a plan.
Whatever happens the best thing us fans can do is get behind the team regardless

Sadly its all too late now to get the cutting edge we so badly need, said it before so i shall say it again, the strikers we have are just not good enough, just how many will Murphy get this year? i shudder to put a figure upon it!
Nouble colud not hit my garage door from twenty fee! Taylor well just how long does it take to get match fit?
When i was just a wee lad my father used to work at Luton town FC, I can remember quite clearly seeing the players running up and down the terraces for hours, getting match fit! they had the stamina to play for 90 minutes, and in those days just one sub! and a much more physical game than that of today!
So i,m afraid its another mid table finish unless some form of miracle occurs, cannot see where the goal;s that are so badly needed are going to come from,.
I like the plan of being hard to beat but to win you need to score goals! and we ain,t doing it!!

They are 20th in league one and concede more than 2 a game, with Rhodes, Campbell, Austin, Zamora, McGoldrick, Le Fondre,Deeney they would get battered! Unless you have class and work rate in that side then your going to ship a lot of goals. JET was a nice guy, but didn't have what we need.

luke 38 it is very early doors to be quoting there league position.
ive seen alot of both leagues and top half of league 1 And bottom half of the championship is a much of a muchness-team often seem to do well when coming up from L1 to the champ.
JET is a big awkward player to play against and played in the championship in the system they are currently playing at bristol he would get plently of goals and assists.
People said the same sort of things about holt and lambert even jordan rhodes--oh hes done it at that level but he wont in the championship but look what happened.its the same game they are playing in front of similar crowds against teams set up in a similar way.
we will see in the future but i say if JET was played in his proper position in a champ team playing fluid, passing , attacking footie he would get goals and assists.
I dont think there is anything wrong with gung ho attacking style let the defence defend the midfield 2 break up play and have a fluid interchanging attacking forward unit of 4 -after all its 3 points for a win

You have a valid point, but I back Mick and just don't think he was right for us. He's a special talent, but if we have Bristol a game just a solid 4-4-2 with Mick would beat a side like Bristol's, but I can see where you coming from

Jimmy 86, Surco 72 and someone else - I'm afraid I find it hard to criticise a man who paid off £30 million of our debts like most others seem to be doing. Give the team time, we're more solid and will finish better than last season and we can build from there. MM is building slowly and we are only 5 games in that's all I am saying. If we are still struggling at XMAS (which we won't be) then I will eat my words. Our opening 2 away games were against the relegated sides - its been a difficult start.
