Berra: We Couldn't Believe It
Friday, 4th Oct 2013 06:00

Defender Christophe Berra recalled Town’s midweek draw at Pride Park, when Derby came from 4-1 down to claim a point, and admitted: “We couldn’t believe it.”

Berra opened the scoring with an early header and Mick McCarthy’s team added further goals from Daryl Murphy (2) and Aaron Cresswell to lead 4-1 with 11 minutes of the first half still remaining.

That remained the half-time score but a half-time pep talk from new boss Steve McClaren lifted the Rams and they netted three times in the second half to drag themselves level.

Berra, 28, said: “It was very disappointing in the end because we got off to such a great start, being 4-1 up. We couldn’t believe it really but they scored an early goal in the second half.

“I think they had changed a few things, gambled a bit more and they put us under a lot of pressure.

“In the long term it’s a point away from home so we’ve just got to move on now. We’ve got a difficult game against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, which we know will be a very physical game.

“As footballers you are thick-skinned and you get on with it. You are disappointed after the game but you come in the next day, it’s a clean slate and you’ve just got to move on.

“You can’t dwell on things in the past, especially as a sportsman, or it will affect you. So you just say ‘That’s gone now and we look to the future’.”

Despite Saturday’s opponents still searching for their first win of the season and with just five points from a possible 27, Berra anticipates a tough task at Hillsborough as Town seek to gain their first away win of the season.

He added: “It’s a very difficult game away at Sheffield Wednesday. They are a very physical team, a tall team, and it’s going to be very difficult.”

If I hear the d word again from Portman Road, I'll spit. It's all we ever got from Magilton, Keane and Jewell and their squads after a screw-up like Derby. I don't want to hear that they're disappointed. I want to hear that they're f****** angry and they'll do their damnedest to make sure it doesn't happen again. The simple fact is they came out thinking the second half was going to be a stroll, switched off, and couldn't pick up again once Derby got their game together. I like MM, who's playing a pretty weak hand dealt him by Evans and still made significant progress, but that particular game didn't say much for his tactical awareness or his motivational skills. Berra's negativity about the next game against a team that hasn't won in ten is hardly encouraging either.
