O'Neill and Keane Sign Contracts
Tuesday, 5th Nov 2013 20:53

The FAI have confirmed that Martin O’Neill and former Blues boss Roy Keane have put pen to paper on their contracts as the manager and assistant manager of the Republic of Ireland. The duo are understood to have agreed two-year initial deals.

“[The FAI] can confirm that both contracts have been signed. Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane will be Ireland's new manager and assistant manager,” a tweet announced.

Mick McCarthy had been tipped to return to the job he occupied between 1996 and 2002 but the FAI made no approach regarding the current Town manager.

I wonder if McCarthy was ever really in the frame. The ROI can't have been impressed by his crxp football and as much as everyone knocks RK at least it wasn't the dire shXte being served up now at Ipswich. I still wonder what Jim Magilton did that was so bad, not as bad as the three who followed.

....... Mick will be disappointed - now perhaps he will concentrate on us and bring a hint, just a hint (can't expect too much) of flair and attacking Football into our game.
And in the process - move us FORWARD.

Hegan, the football may be not be sparkling but think of where we are now compared to 12 months ago. Everyone also knocks Keane for a reason..........he was a cr*p manager who terrified the living daylights out of every player who played for him.

MM may have ruffled feathers by ignoring the 2 dimwits that called themselves 'Headhunters' and dont blame him.. Think O'Neill and Keane have yet to actually sign, though guaranteed.. Hope they do well

Keaneish- if I was a betting man, I'd bet you we'll be more likely fighting relegation come end of season than play offs. Hope you prove me wrong. MM out- but I'm guessing this will take a while since ME doesn't really care if we get promoted or not. MM/ME perfect fit. Keep it mediocre and mid-table...

I think Mick should go. Palace would be great for him. He lives close by. He's been a stodgy and inflexible Manager at all the clubs he's been at. Solid by nature, and solid in thinking. People will not continue to come and watch this dull, midtable mediocrity. We are predictable and inflexible, and cannot alter strategy mid game. Its a major failing in a Manager. The club is a fan's investment. It is the fans that make a club. Fans often go back generations. Its a powerful thing. Though it has so easily been subsumed by clever financial folk who know they can offset their football team debts as tax relief. And can play with our interests if it makes financial sense. It's time that football clubs respond to fans needs to watch attractive football. The fans will be around forever. Loving a football team is not an intellectual exercise. Mick should go so we can watch attractive football again.

Keane thinks very highly of O'Neill and O'Neill was the one who chose Keane to be his number 2.
Good luck to the both.

I agree with you about Magilton, we do seem to have stepped backwards since he left.
As for McCarthy last year we were playing crap football and bottom of the table, now we are playing medioca football and mid table.
MM has got rid of the deadwood and brought in players for next to nothing, Town now have a good base to build on. As long as MM is here the long haul we will improve each year, it all the chopping and changing that causes problems.
No wins in 5 or or 1 defeat in 5 it's how you want to look at it

It is all set up nicely for O'Neill to fail as a manager AGAIN - he is one of the most overrated managers in recent history, surpassed in ineptitude perhaps only by the talentless con Venables - and for Keane to take over alone and for himself to fail (again), and then for McCarthy to 'rescue' Ireland from obscurity in about 4 years time.

I saw kean and o'neil interview on news, when O'Neill was asked why he chose kean he said "I have asked myself the same question many times over the last 48hours " so sounds like a disaster in the making

I agree blue lady, we have some strange fans. Give him a chance. We lost to the leaders by a late goal and seen to be drawing a lot of games. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to imagine these draws turning into wins. Anyway I have heard the BBC goal of the month competition is being changed to the goal against naaaaarwich completion. That's a reason to be cheerful!

Dford7 celebrate with a cold 7 up:-). The problem is a small minority of fans seem to thrive on peoples failings, they are the ones that never comment when things go well - it doesn't float their boat. There are of course some reasonable fans who see it from a holistic point of view and who will have a winge when we fail to turn up such as Friday, that I totally understand...
