McCarthy: Hyam Should Ignore Negativity
Tuesday, 24th Dec 2013 12:06

Boss Mick McCarthy has told midfielder Luke Hyam to ignore the negativity from the section of the Town support which jeered him during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Watford and subsequently made similar comments on social media.

In his post-match press conference McCarthy urged fans to back the former Northgate High School pupil — a Town supporter as a youngster — while the midfielder tweeted his frustration at his treatment soon after the game: “I love haters so keep on hating.”

“Read all the good stuff, take no notice of the negativity,” was McCarthy’s advice to the 22-year-old on how to cope with the situation. “There are always numpties out there who want to write [negatively] on Twitter.

“I don’t know why people do it because it doesn’t make anybody play any better. But the majority [of fans] are fantastic, there are the odd few who create a negative environment in which to try and play. It does my head in.

“But what you’ll find is that he’ll get great support, certainly from me and from everybody else, all the players, because they value what he does. He’s somebody who puts a shift in like he does every week.

“Is he the best player in the world? No, he isn’t, because if he was he wouldn’t be here. But what he does is give his all for Ipswich and that’s what people should appreciate.”

The midfielder seems certain to be in McCarthy's side at Doncaster on Boxing Day.

Is he Danny of the Dazzlers or Roy of the Rovers? No.

What he is is a local lad playing for the team he has always supported and giving everything his got and then some for the team, his team.

Ignore the booers Luke they're not worth it, waste of space the lot of them.

I initially read this headline as "McCarthy: Hyam Should Ignore Nativity".

Being the REAL son of god himself, I imagine McCarthy has been setting the boys straight about the Christmas story.

Chortle.

Putting in a shift is all well and good. Being a local lad and a town supporter is great. But none if that changes the fact that Luke Hyam is not good enough at this level. Saying we are 3 points off the playoffs with him in the team so it must be ok is crazy. He is not one of the best midfielders at the club and as said above others have been dropped for playing poorly but he seems yo get away with it. He tries very very hard, great, but he gives the team absolutely nothing in a creative aspect. We will not beat teams in this division purely by trying hard and running around a lot. We need to create things for our goalscorer seven though we really only have 1 of those, hopefully SEB will change that. Booing our players is not a good idea but fans should have the right to express their views and not everyone can be wrong about Hyam. I can't see us breaking into the top 6 with him in the side and we need more help for Mcgoldrick which should me SEB replaces Murphy who is purely a slow lump of a forward with very little ability or team ethic. We are close to top 6, a couple of changes could see us make it. MM will get it right and see that Hyam & Murphy need replacing. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE ... COYB !!!!!

So I get down thumbed for a post supporting Luke. Oh well sums up some of the so-called supporters of the Town.
Any of the older supporters remember Rus Pelling career ended before it started by the boo boys of the time.

warktheline - ...it's called ambition, akin to the progress we have made to date, which I acknowledge.
What it doesn't mean is you have to 'rest on your laurels' - unless you chose to - I don't !!

Lots of valid comments. Luke Hyam gives 100% all the time and probably covers more ground than anybody else on the pitch. However he is no longer in the category of "youngster" at age 22 and has had a lot of first team experience. As such he shouldn't be too upset by constructive criticism although the boo boys at Saturday's game should be ashamed of themselves - at the game we support the players whether they are playing well or not. On TWTD we can surely say that at this particular game Luke's passing was poor and he continuously frustrated the crowd by passing backwards when there was space in front of him. His confidence was evidently low but with MM's guidance he will still be a great asset this season.

Have to agree these articles are probably blowing this issue up to something more than what it is, the times I have been at PR (and that dates back to the 70's) some part of the crowd usually has an issue with some player (our own) sometimes a few people other times more than that but to just 'ignore' the negativity is a bit strange and it's obviously there for a reason and you can't 'fool' your own fans they know what their seeing! To boo - No! but to ignore any form of critical analysis wouldn't be correct, he (Luke) should take on board the criticism and like a 'professional' which they are, address the problems in his own play. Don't forget they get paid well but have to perform in front of a crowd so it's part and parcel of the job.

No one can force you people to like luke Hyam or the manager or ipswich town for that matter. There are after all plenty of other clubs to watch , why should we have to put up with you?

Alfromcol - you are spot on. There were 15,000 groans when yet another move broke down because of a lack of vision in midfield. It was frustration with that problem in general and not Hyam in particular.

Hyam remains a promising player but unfortunately Skues plays a similar role & also isnt a goal scorer. To climb the table we need goals from midfield ala Wark & Holland.
Its a shame that his header didnt go in as its possible for a player having a poor game to score the winner

Chin up Luke, it wasn't so long ago than many fans were giving Tommy Smith stick and now look where he is at.

Just keep off the twitter when the emotions are running high, it will only get you in trouble!

Town fans in "fickle" shocker!
Let's be real here. If the effort and the end had been 4 inches lower and hit the net he would be "Lukey Hyam, he's one of our own!"

Support the team! All of them. Booing your own achieves nothing
