Gillingham Confirm Marriott and Hewitt Loans
Friday, 3rd Jan 2014 10:26

League One Gillingham have confirmed that striker Jack Marriott has joined them on loan for the rest of the season and that right-back Elliott Hewitt is back at the Priestfield Stadium until January 30th.

Marriott, 19, has just completed a highly successful loan spell at Skrill Premier Woking, where he scored nine goals in nine games, while Hewitt, also 19, is close to full fitness having had his initial loan with the Gills cut short by an ankle injury after only three appearances.

Town have included 24-hour recalls in both deals, although that only applies after the first 28 days in the case of Marriott.

The Blues striker could make his Gills debut in tonight's live Sky game against Wolves at the Priestfield. Hewitt is likely to be back in action next week.

Anyone else concerned about how light we are at the back? we have our back four and Mings?

Know what you mean Stuart.

If one of the centre backs gets injured then stick Chambers in and recall Hewitt. We also have Carlos Edwards who can play right back.

If Cresswell leaves/injured then I think we have a problem. Mings, for me, is not ready it but MM likes him and I trust MM. I guess Stephen Hunt could play left back as well?

Great news for Marriott, let's hope he gets his chance tonight on the box.

Slightly disappointed that the likes of Hewitt and Wordsworth haven't been given much of a chance this season though.

Stearman got sent off on Wednesday so maybe if we look for someone who has proved himself for me Ben Mee may be good because he knows the league and is still quite young the same with Lewis Dunk he maybe not quite so experienced in the division but has some experience and again is under 24 I believe

Good test for Marriott now to see what he is made of...if he scores regularly in this division then he's ready to come on for us at least as a sub.

Light at the back? You are forgetting Mick's trump card - Mr Titus Bramble. A contract to the end of the season in waiting.

With Mings, who looked good against Blackpool, very assured for a young man, I think he could slot in. Edwards could play at right back as we know and we have three centre halfs in our back four. What concerns me is / would be the initial lack of undertstanding with a changed back four, again that was evident to some degree at Blackpool - especially went Hunt was at left back, it cost us Blackpool's second goal. It's not just about the players but about communication and getting used to playing together as a unit.

Will Cresswell depart? I don't think so. I know Mick keeps talking him up, but to be honest, his distribution isn't up to it. Too many poor, wasted crosses, etc. Just my view...

Interesting times ahead...

@ Slowerball: Cresswell might put in the odd stinker cross, but as the highest accumulator of assists in the Champ at the moment, suggesting his crosses aren't up to it is a stunning conclusion.

As far as Marriott and Hewitt go, I'll carry on doing what I did when Marriott was at Working and bet on the Gills top win every game- bearing in mind Woking were near bottom when he got there, ad now mid-table, I owe Marriott a drink for the results he earned me !

Had my bet on a Gills win... made another little winner- Jack may not have played, but at 9/2, excellent result !
