McCarthy After Defensive Cover
Saturday, 11th Jan 2014 06:04

Boss Mick McCarthy has reiterated that he is looking for defensive cover during the transfer window, but has played down adding to his striking options.

“The defence is where I need cover,” he said. “I’ve got five defenders, they’ve been remarkable - Cressy, Chambo going and playing at right-back has been different class, and Christophe and Tommy in the middle.

“Those four have been in most of the games and Tyrone Mings is our cover for left-back, right-back and centre-back. He’s great.”

On Thursday, Peterborough director of football Barry Fry said McCarthy had made an enquiry regarding former loan striker Tyrone Barnett prior to his move to Bristol City, but McCarthy says he’s not in need of additional frontmen with Daryl Murphy only sidelined briefly with a thigh problem.

“Not really because Murph will be fit next week, he’ll be training on Monday, which means I’ll have four strikers, Tayls, Frank, Dids and Murph. I won’t be getting any loans in to cover for them.”

Regarding Barnett, he added: “He’s gone to Bristol City. Hypothetical chats on anybody are not really worth my voice.”

Elliott Hewitt and Jack Marriott recently joined Gillingham on loan and Freddie Veseli Bury, but McCarthy, who says there have been no enquiries or interest in any of his players, doesn’t expect many similar moves: “There won’t be anybody else going out on loan.

“We spoke about Anthony Wordsworth going out on loan and that may be a possibility because he wants to play games but he’s got tonsillitis at the minute, he was really ill after the game last week. That’s a possibility, but I’d only do that if I could get somebody else in.”

Yea, fair enough bring in some defensive cover, but its in the midfield area we really need to strengthen. Skuse and Hyam in the centre are too similar and if given the choice over the 2 id pick skuse all day long, he's been a real classy player on the ball and can do the same job as Hyam, just better. I know Luke runs around a lot and puts in a shift but in my opinion he's just not quite up to it. I want to see more of hunt out wide, as I think he has a lot to offer and think the midfield needs beefing up in general. We have one of the smallest squads in the championship and need a few more faces in. Evans, now's the time to back your manager, who's doing a great job!!!!

Need players in most positions really. A very small , yet talented squad. But one or two injuries would see us on our arse.

Have people on here got any midfield suggestions? I agree we need greater creativity in there just wondered who people have in mind? I heard somebody mention Franck Moussa from Coventry...

I can see people like Frimpong come in on loan, people have also mentioned Bakary sako from wolves. Would love sako but would suggest that is beyond us financially, because there was talk of money bags forest wanting sako and for big money. we need some creativity in midfield and if woody isn't the answer, which we thought he might be, then we need to look elsewhere. I would say someone like O'hara from wolves or something

I don't think we need anyone in midfield , we are better off with the battlers we have got than trying to get some make believe play maker wandering around the pitch. Agree with mick , defenders are priority if we want to stay where we are.

Looks like MM wont get ant budget for this window. Will just have to look for free's or loans. Pity ME wont open the cheque book to give MM what he needs.

I was really keen on Frimpong. Arsenal pedigree but with a good work ethic. Then I noticed his injury record and he has barely played more than 15 games a season throughout his career. He is still only young though and if he did stay injury free he would be a fantastic addition. I have always liked Johnnie Jackson at Charlton, he's getting on a bit (31) but seems to have scored double figures for about 4 seasons in a row. Craig Conway has looked great on loan at Brighton from Cardiff. Hamill is always a handful but MM didn't play him when he signed him for Wolves. One thing is for sure, they can be as creative and talented as they like but if they don't put a shift in Mick won't play them...

Danlyles agree about Hamill I was hugely impressed by him in the huddersfield game and in my opinion is the best winger in the championship, Huddersfield also had an awesome midfield and ran rings around us. Irishtim looks like MM has no budget if at all this window and now I believe questions should be asked of ME. Our best league position in years and a real chance of finishing in the play offs and he is not backing mick, poor in my view. EVANS BACK YOUR MANAGER!!!

jimmy86. Agree with you. If ME is serious about this club & premiership footie now is the time to start giving MM funds. Hopefully 3 points today.

Unfortunately it is as a result of the minefield that is FFP!!! ever since that was talked about being brought into play evans has reigned in, with regards to backing his managers. there are ways and means of getting around FFP, which is supposedly what the 2 MD's were brought in to explore. To me, they are simply employee's from within the ME group and effectively will just do what he says, Yes men in other words. FFP will only work if teams, who flaunt the system and dont follow it, Forest is a prime example due to the money they threw about in the summer, get penalised and punished as a result. All well and good following FFP and standing still, whilst watching teams like huddersfield spend money is not right. Need financial backing now, more than ever

Would getting Owen Garvan on a loan deal from palace be a mad thing? Just wondering what others think.

muccletonjoe added 12:22 - Jan 11
Yes 'irishtim' totally mad , if I remember how Garvan used to play , I don't think mm would be a fan.

muccletonjoe how did garvan used to play? I thought he was the most stylish midfielder we've had for a while

DanLyles added 13:00 - Jan 11
Garvan has great passing ability but also a somewhat lethargic style which MM would not tolerate. I still remember his somewhat unusual running style!!! Imagine if Garvan had Hyam's work rate and tackling...

Did I just describe Cole Skuse :)

....... there's only one line that's important to MM, and guess which one that is ?

He'd board half the Goal up if he could.
