Woody Working Doubly Hard to Get Fit
Wednesday, 22nd Jan 2014 13:03

Midfielder Anthony Wordsworth is working doubly hard to get back to full fitness after his recent bouts of tonsillitis, an illness which he says has affected him on several occasions in the last few years.

The 25-year-old, who joined the Blues from Colchester a year ago, is working with fitness coach Andy Liddell as he looks to add to his one start — in the home FA Cup tie against Preston earlier in the month — and two sub appearances this season.

“I’ve had two flare ups lately,” he said, speaking in an interview in next Saturday’s match programme. “One over the Christmas period and the other after the Preston game at Portman Road.

“That game brought on my second bout. They say that when you are fatigued, it can hit you. That’s what happened. I’ve been getting attacks two or three times a year over the last couple of years.

“Playing in that game definitely triggered the attack and in some ways I’m glad it did because it meant that I needed to see a specialist and could get to the bottom of what the problem was.

“In May, I’ll be having my tonsils out. Before that, I want to concentrate on getting myself fit. I’m working hard, doing two sessions a day with Lids. Hopefully after another week or two I’ll be in a better position to get some games.

“I want to be a success at Ipswich Town. I want to get my fitness up and give the manager a real problem with leaving me out.”

Speaking last week, manager Mick McCarthy said he wasn’t ruling out Wordsworth going out on loan to get games under his belt: “He’s had a long time out, so we’ll see about [whether he goes out on loan]. If he’s not going anywhere, then I want him fit to play for me.”

This is a concern if he keeps getting ill, he'll always be trying to get fit again afterwards. Have not been impressed with what I have seen as yet, he needs to start producing the goods and sooner rather than later. Jury is still out on Woody, but I can't see him getting there which is such a shame. However, as long as he wears a Town shift; i'll support him.

...... probably the only creative genuine midfielder we have - only goes to show how vague some people are that think otherwise. Give the lad a chance - and a few games to prove himself when he if fit again - can't do any worse with the lack of spark we currently have in that department.

h32 - how do you work that out on a guy who has hardly played a game at this level ? Yes give him a chance but don't imagine he will be the answer to the problem

h32 - hold on a minute, this player has been on the books of ITFC a long while, earn't a lot of money and has not contributed in any way for one thing or another to the 1st team and you say give him a chance. When he has been given a chance he under performs every time. A club like Ipswich can not afford to carry anyone. He has hardly been classed as fit since he's been here. I want players champing at the bit to get in the side. Wordsworth has not once shown that attitude.

Cloddyseedbed your posts are always negative, when has the bloke been given a chance? And if you say Preston then I challenge you to name one player who played well in that game. Plus if you have ever had tonsillitis you will know just how bad it feels, he is human too.

This is all down to stress. I had it twice in quick succession last year. He needs his tonsils out.

what i call a proper chance is a run of ten games in a side-lets not forget when he came here he was a decent goalscoring midfield player.lets get behind him

In his limited number of appearances (7?) He has scored 1 goal for the 1st team.. and atleast 1 assist aswell.

You could certainly argue with that stat that he is worth sticking with as the likes of Skuse and Hyam offer little or no no goal threat week in week out.

Wordsworth was a standout performer in leauge one how have we turned him into no good player in a team of mainly leauge one standard players probaly his injury had somthing to do with it then MM not giving him a chance when others ie Nouble and Anderson playing week in week out when not performing give him a few games then make judgements get off his back and jump on MM for not playing him

Tonsillitis is one of the most debilitating illnesses and it's really bad luck on Woody. This player does have a bit of class. After he's had his tonsils out I expect him to be a totally different player to what he has shown recently.Unfortunately, we may have to wait until August, but the wait could be worth it.

Agree - tonsilitis is NOT just a sore throat ... your whole body aches and even shuts down. It is agony and debilitating.

The report says that he IS having his tonsils out - no idea why waiting til May unless waiting til close season ... like many injuries (hernia etc) clubs try to nurse players through til close season for surgery

THEREFORE, we will not therefore see the best of this guy til next year when he has the chance to be properly fit without the illness.

But may I ask a question?

Isn't this the same guy who broke a bone in his back playing for Town ... and carried on????

Either I've got it wrong - or the knockers here need to take a long hard look at what it means to commit - in his case to playing, and in our to supporting .......

Are we winning as much as I'd like ? NO.
Are we playing with wanton abandon and entertaining as much as I'd like ? NO.
Are we seeing the new faces that I'd like? NO.

But do I support my team regardless ? YES.

(Get well soon Wordy - we need your style of play!)

If he doesn't play regularly then he'll never get a chance to show any of us (and Mick) what he can do..I think far too many average players have been given long runs in the team this season.

I can't wait for Wordsworth to be fit again.

He looked decent at the end of last season and we could certainly do with him now, as we've got nobody playing in an attacking midfield role with any real ability.

Luke Hyam simply isn't good enough to be in a promotion chasing team - please hurry back Wordy!!!

He seems to have a good attitude. Just hope he can stay healthy and fit ... then we can judge him properly.

@cloddyseedbed - saw him at the Hull game last season (one of the few games Mick brought him on) and his second half performance was ok although sadly failed to clear the ball away which led to their winning goal. How anybody can judge him with such few starts is unbelievable! but clearly needs to get fit on a permanent basis.

Calling yourself @essexblue proves you're not a true town man. COYB

Would we notice if Woody went on loan? If he never came back? No.
