McGoldrick Out for 10 Weeks
Monday, 17th Feb 2014 12:53

Town’s play-off hopes have been dealt a serious blow with 16-goal top scorer David McGoldrick ruled out for around 10 weeks - all but the final week of the season - with a knee injury. The 26-year-old suffered the problem in the closing minutes of Saturday’s 0-0 home draw with Blackpool.

“Didz [McGoldrick] has suffered a partial tear of the medial ligament in his right knee,” physio Matt Byard told the club website. “He had an MRI scan this morning and will be wearing a brace for the next six weeks.

“After that, you are looking at the rehabilitation of around four weeks, so in all we’d expect Didz to be out for 10 weeks, which obviously takes us up to the last week of the season.”

Byard says there is better news regarding keeper Dean Gerken, who missed Saturday’s match with a stiff neck, and midfielder Paul Green, who took a heavy knock.

“Gerks has a neck strain but it’s improved today and if that continues, he should be fit to train later in the week,” he added.

“Paul took a bad kick on Saturday but again he should be fine for later in the week."

Midfielder Luke Hyam was forced off in the early stages of Saturday's game with a hamstring problem.

And the wait for a 20 goal season from a striker continues. I say Bring Marriot back we have nothing to lose. I personally thought the play offs would be a massive ask with McGoldrick and though it is nice to be flirting with the top 6 I have always believed next season would be our best chance. We have come an incredibly long way since Mick Took charge and if we carry on improving at this rate we will be top 6 material next season. We have been punching above out weight this season, I tipped Wigan to be the late team that gatecrashes the Play offs and I stand by that choice.

This is very bad news, not just in terms of his goals but there is no doubt Didz has been a cut above the rest of the team all season. He has vision, is not afraid to shoot and is able to go and get the ball and make something happen. This would not be so bad if there were others who stepped up to the plate but we seem to have very little in terms of attacking flair elsewhere in the squad. SEB should now get a run, but he may not be match fit. I am still undecided upon Taylor who up to now has been no more than a problem player, he has however, shown in inconsistent flashes that he does possess an element of talent. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season pans out now..

This won't do much for attendance figures at Portman Road unless SEB can find fitness and form really quickly.

Oh god. Terrible news we are going to be left with Nouble and Murphy up front after all :(. Let's hope Taylor and then SEB lives up to the standards required. Thought we were going to have a player get 20+ for the first time in ages. Obviously we have no chance of reaching the playoffs now.im afraid the football is going to get even more dire now- although it's hard to believe.

Very bad news. I'd be surprised, however, if there were not a plan B already in place because MM must have realised this might happen. (Or maybe SEB was the plan B?) I wouldn't write us off just yet, but this doesn't make things any easier.

Wow I was in the middle of making a McGoldrick compilation video of all his goals this season thinking I'd need to get more music to add on because he was bound to score more and this happens. Ouch. Well it's time to see Paul Taylor and SEB more I guess, also is Wickham still available for loan? He would jump at the opportunity to join us.

Since we have no other strikers available and little prospect of being able to bring in someone of the same standard surely now McCarthy will stick Taylor out there and tell him to do his stuff. If nothing else it will add to his value (provided he does a decent job) when McCarthy comes to sell him on - which he surely will. One thing is for certain Nouble is NOT the answer and Ebanks-Blake looks bigger than Jason Scotland did before he lost weight and got fit!! The other alternative is to get Marriott back home and give the kid a go.

It's very obvious that Taylor will be gone in the summer, so a perfect opportunity to recall Marriot back from his loan spell. Not much to lose for the rest of the season have we?

And he did miss and easy header on Saturday :)
I think we have to be realistic and say that with the current squad and players we have the Play Offs are not only a long way off but we are miles away from the Premiership!
We are better off slowly building as there are no quick fixes without funds.
hopefully young Jack, SEB and Taylor will be given a chance.
We also need our midfield to help out, along with Murphy!

Very disappointing news, but this is the reality of having a small squad. However, as us Town fans often have to, let's try and take the positives out of the situation...

As others have pointed out, this can be the opportunity for Taylor to have a proper run out - he is somewhat of a forgotten man and this could make or break his career with Ipswich. I hope he gets the proper chance he needs to show us his value.

If SEB improves his fitness, it's also his chance to shine. We know what he can do at this level - but does he still have it in him? We will find out...

Bringing Jack Marriott back and gelling with the side - even if for the last 10-15 mins of matches will also improve his confidence and build on the experience he's had in the lower leagues.

Does Didz' injury also take the promotion pressure off us, somewhat? I didn't think we had enough in us to make the play-offs, even with McGoldrick fit and starting. So now, i see it firmly as this season being what most of us knew it would be - another transitional period.

Unfortunate though it is, we'll just have to see what the other lads up top really have in them. This will be a worthwhile exercise in itself, allowing MM to see who can cut it when the going is tough. Just think that it could be worse - we have had a very stable first half of the season and that had we been in a similar position to last year, this truly would be a disaster.

4-3-3-or 4-5-1 - is it the same?
Murphy through the middle and Taylor cutting in from the left. 5 games for Taylor to prove himself or he can do one. Hunt to play left mid after we all realise Taylor has no end product
Marriot back for end of the season games
With Murphy through the middle we should play through the midfield more which may be better to watch but likely to expose their limiitations

There are a lot of games still left to watch this season - I had pencilled myself in for 10 of them, bugger

Lets be honest guys, until we get some player investment or good youth players coming through, we are going nowhere, the football is dull/dire at times, we have over achieved in a poor quality Championship thus far this season. MM has done a great job 'stabilising' the results but at some stage we need to 'kick on' and be serious promotion candidates..........can't see it at the moment! I know this post won't be popular but it's the truth, we really need a good push now.
