Town new boy Jonny Williams is aiming to reinforce the club’s play-off challenge before his month-long loan stint expires.

The Crystal Palace midfielder made his debut as a substitute in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough but he and his temporary team-mates have an opportunity to bounce back at lowly Yeovil tonight.

Williams, 20, knows all about the twists and turns of a Championship season, having experienced with the Eagles last season exactly what Ipswich are looking to achieve in the current campaign.

The Kent-born Welsh international said: “Getting promoted to the Premier League is a great feeling — there’s nothing quite like it.

“There’s a great squad here and it’s a real shame we didn’t win up at Middlesbrough on Saturday and put some more points on the board. But we’re still in there fighting and there are still a lot of games to play.

“Last season with Palace we had a spell towards the end of the season where we didn’t win many games but we still ended up winning promotion. Who knows what’s going to happen?”

The record books show that Palace failed to win in a nine-game run, which included a comprehensive 3-0 defeat at Portman Road, and only by winning 3-2 at home to Peterborough on the last day of the regular season did they secure fifth spot in the table on the 72-point mark.

Williams then helped them to overcome fierce rivals Brighton over two legs in the semi-final of the play-offs before they triumphed 1-0 in the Wembley final against favourites Watford, who had finished third with five points more.

The youngster had been scheduled to make his Town debut a week ago but an injury in training on the Friday ruled him out of the next day’s 1-0 home win over Birmingham.

He added: “I had a slight niggle, felt it on the Friday and I was annoyed that it prevented me from making my debut at Portman Road. I was really looking forward to that game but at least the team had a good result.

“I enjoyed my debut and was quite happy with my performance but it was difficult circumstances to come off the bench at Middlesbrough. It was a shame we conceded a second goal just before half-time because it killed us really.”
