Wigan Athletic 1-2 Town Monday, 22nd Sep 2014 22:01
Goals from Luke Hyam and Conor Sammon saw the Blues to a 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic, their first ever win at the DW Stadium. Hyam turned home the opener on 20 and Sammon netted against his old club in the 63rd minute, before Martyn Waghorn set up a nervy finish for Blues supporters when he pulled one back with eight minutes remaining.
On-loan striker Sammon was handed his second Town start with Hyam also returning to the side having missed the last two games.
Jay Tabb was missing through illness and Paul Anderson dropped to the bench, while recent re-signing Darren Ambrose was on the bench for the first time since signing a short-term deal. Town lined-up 4-3-3 with David McGoldrick behind Sammon and Daryl Murphy.
The Latics dominated the early stages and went close in the third minute when Andy Delort headed into the ground and over from Shaun Maloney’s cross following a freekick, Murphy having tripped Callum McManaman on the right.
Town gradually began to get a foothold in the game and on 14 McGoldrick found Mings on the left with a looping ball, the full-back bringing the ball all the way across the area to the right wing without being able to find a gap for a shot.
Murphy struck the Blues’ first effort on goal in the 18th minute, Latics keeper Scott Carson getting down to his right to push away the Irishman’s 25-yard effort. A minute later, Mings crossed from the left and Sammon stooped to nod wide at the far post.
Town were starting to get on top and in the 20th minute they went in front. Murphy used his strength on the right to hold off a defender before playing a ball in to Hyam on the edge of the area.
The midfielder moved it on to McGoldrick, who fed Mings on the left, who in turn crossed low into the box back to Hyam, who turned the ball home for his - and the Town midfield’s - first goal of the season, only the third of his senior career and the Blues’ first at the DW Stadium in their fourth game at Wigan’s current home.
Town went close to adding a second within a minute when McGoldrick got into a good position on the right inside the area and cut the ball across towards Sammon, but hit the ex-Latic on the backside and the danger was cleared.
Christophe Berra picked up the game’s first yellow card in the 22nd minute for a late challenge on McManaman as he broke on the right. From Adam Forshaw’s freekick, Emmerson Boyce headed well over.
The Blues, who were by now well on top, went close again three minutes later when Cole Skuse threaded a ball through to Murphy just to the right, midway inside the Wigan half. The Blues’ number nine cut a low ball towards McGoldrick with the advancing Carson looking beaten, but Ivan Ramis got in ahead of him to slide the ball behind.
Wigan started to come back into it again and on 32 Boyce saw a shot from inside the area deflect wide off Berra. Four minutes later, the Latics were forced into a substitution, the injured McManaman making way for James McClean.
Mings had his name added to referee Andy Woolmer’s book in the 39th minute for a trip as Maloney broke through the centre midway inside the Town half. Skipper Luke Chambers was had got back as cover and the yellow card was the right decision.
The freekick deflected wide off the wall and from the resultant corner on the right Delort headed well beyond the far post.
Neither side threatened again before the referee brought the half to a close with the Blues deserving their lead.
After the home side had dominated the first 10 minutes, the Blues got on top and created two very decent chances in addition to Hyam’s well-worked goal.
The Latics came more into the game again towards the break but without creating a significant chance, while Town continued to look a threat.
There was a scare for Wigan five minutes after the break when keeper Carson was forced to rush off his line to clear James Perch’s backpass as McGoldrick chased it down. Moments later at the other end, Forshaw saw a strike deflect over.
Skuse made way for Kevin Bru on the hour mark, the Mauritius international hitting an early effort over the bar after Bishop had nodded a Mings cross back into the area following a corner.
And on 63 the Blues increased their lead with former Latic Sammon netting his first goal since his loan move from Derby.
McGoldrick picked up a loose ball midway inside the Wigan half and brought it forward before playing it into the path of Sammon. The Dubliner took it in on goal and got the luck of the bounce as he took it past - or rather through - Carson before tapping home from a couple of feet and celebrating in front of the small band of Town supporters behind the goal.
It might have been 3-0 on 66 when Murphy was found in space on the left but the striker’s touch let him down and the ball bounced to Carson. Two minutes later, McGoldrick found himself space on the right of the area but shot wide.
Ambrose came on for his third debut for the Blues in the 71st minute with Bishop, who had been suffering with cramp, making way.
Wigan began to put the Blues under a bit of pressure, winning a number of corners as the game moved into its final 15 minutes. Following one flagkick on the right, McClean returned to the far post and Gerken did well to block from Ramis.
McGoldrick forced Carson to save down to his right with a 25-yard strike, then with eight minutes to go the home side pulled a goal back.
McClean, who scored twice against the Blues at Portman Road last season, was found in space by a deep corner from the right and the Irishman smashed a shot which Waghorn diverted into the net from close range.
Forshaw nodded into Gerken’s arms as the home side went looking for an equaliser with the Blues defending increasingly desperately.
On 88 Wigan came within a whisker of getting back on terms when sub Oriol Riera hit the post after latching on to a half-cleared cross from the right. Soon after, Tommy Smith replaced McGoldrick as the Blues looked to shore things up at the back.
As the match moved into four minutes of additional time Town were still very much under the cosh, Boyce volleying wide from one of several corners.
But they held on to claim a deserved first win at the DW Stadium to make it nine points out of nine in the last 10 days.
There were some nervy moments in the closing stages with Town sitting very deep, but they had been worth their two-goal lead and might have been even further ahead had they taken their other first-half opportunities.
The win takes the Blues up to seventh in the table with Rotherham visiting Portman Road on Saturday.
Thought is was a good performance, you are always as the away side going to get pressed in the final 15. Mick was slow to respond tactically at the end but we could have caught them again with Murph and McG. The pressure in midfield built after we lost Scuse. We're there any Wigan fans in the ground LOL
Cracking result & performance, super away win against a side that was not far off an immediate return last year. Credit to MM he set the team up to go attacking & got the tactics spot on. The unexpected away point at Derby has really kick started our season.
Great to see Dumb and Dumber come on with their usual 'expert analysis' and overview of the game . Wigan are not a bad team but the way we closed them across the pitch beat them into submission - Alot of real positives in that performance . Dumb and Dumber - will just focus on the last 10 minutes - cheerio

Makethat Dumber , Dumb and Dumbest - three numpties now on board the 'end is nigh' lets find some reason to turn a positive into a negative You must have a great life - chin up .
good to see all the negative commments again well we were awesome passed the ball around superbly especially for hyams goal great from the youngsters like watching barcelona 3 wins on the trot and chance for a fourth and into the playoff positions we are making great progress with solid defenders we gonna have great season
We were significantly weaker defending after Skuse went off, also Mings was beginning to tire and feel his hamstring. Ambrose hadn't played a competitive game since April (and not in the Championship for a year), so bound to be a bit rusty. Not surprising we began to come under pressure at the end. I was about the only person in the pub with confidence that we'd hold on!
A thought on Sammon. Ungainly, the ball going almost anywhere off his head/foot, fortunate to get away with the ball hitting his elbow on the way to his goal. However, he was always getting in the way of the Wigan defence, putting himself about, jumping for headers, disrupting their patterns. Along with the rest of the team's pressing was the reason that Wigan couldn't get out of their own half for large parts of the game. Plus he was a solid, hard-working supplementary presence at left back during those last, desperate 10 minutes. And he did score what turned out to be the winning goal.
Well that provided some squeaky bottom time didn't it!! Thought we were fantastic for much of the game, even sky commentary admiring our "up tempo" game. Not heard that of town lately! Some great individual performances, I really liked the three man midfield of Hyam, skuse and Bishop and we bossed that midfield. Skuse surely must have shown his doubters why Mick has faith him, his protection of the back four was all to clear when he left the pitch...Bru was awful, and should we conceded a second I would totally hold him to account! We went from bossing the midfield to having no control meaning the back four were under immense pressure. Ambrose did ok nothing more nothing less but for his first championship game in a year we could expect little else. He worked hard and played a few half decent passes, with someone like skuse doing the holding role I think Ambrose could definatly play a part even if from the Bench, certainly heads and shoulders above Bru but then so is my 80 year old mum :-). A good feel factor is bsck at town and long may it last, my glass was almost empty after Norwich it is now replenished COYB
Excellent performance last night, I have been critical of negative tactics in the past ,great to see players in their proper positions Mings and Parr pushing forward, young Bishop adding creativity and positivity in midfield, Hyam superb. It would have been nice to have seen us take a few of the chances we created and we would have been out of sight long before that frantic scramble at the end where lets face it if that shot that hit the post had gone in it would have ruined a brilliant night, however much to look forward on this display and long may it continue.
@brian a mul - for a run of three games, about ten months ago, the end of November to early December (Charlton A, Blackburn H, Huddersfield H). For a longer winning run than that you have to go back to four games in Jan/Feb 2012 and we haven't managed five wins on the trot since October 2003.
I must say, that was the most promising game performance that I have seen from Ipswich in a long long time. A nervy end to the game, but for 75 minutes of the game we were in complete control. Well done Town.
Hi from Christchurch New Zealand, watched the game live over breakfast this morning, what a great result! I thought we showed great composure for 75 mins then lost the game plan a bit, but they had to attack to get something from the game which didn't help Bru or Ambrose. I think Mings has that X factor and could go on to higher honours given a bit more experience. Probably added another 1m to his value today, a real gem! nobody has mentioned Parr who I thought did a good job, but like the old tradesmen right back off the past, just did his job. Berra, Sammon, Murphy. Hyam looked very good and Gerken did what he had to. I would like to see ITFC give Mings former club a friendly in pre season to acknowledge the talent they unearthed to give them some support.
MM certainly surprised us all with his selection but what a refreshing positive outlook which was certainly rewarded with an emphatic performance. Its nice to be an ugly team in a way and other teams will not like playing us, may be worth a goal in itself. We can also play a little though and people tend to forget that. Main thing now is to focus on Saturday with no complacency and get the job done, setting us up for 2 massive away games next week.
Thought MM got his team selection spot on and and his high pressing game against 3 at the back and his substitutes apart from Bru still think he looks like a child playing in mens football , would have got Smithy on earlier . Thought Hyam was MOM obviously but also thought Murph put in a great shift and held it up or won the ball for us so often , Berra and Chambo great at the back . Always going to be under pressure from the home team for last 10 mins if they are losing but that aside thought we dominated the game .
A lot of us said we would look better if MM picked his two best centre backs and natural full backs , he has 3 wins on the bounce , a lot of us said Skuse , Hyam and Tabb together was too negative a midfield and needed a creative player Bishop , break them up and again 3 wins . Not all criticism is wanting MM out just change the system as we had the players , it is now working as we have more energy and flair in the middle
Sadly I am being reduced to the odd game shown on tv from the Championship here in Sweden. So I am all the more pleased to see a great win, be it with me biting my nails for the final minutes. But that makes it even sweeter. About the game, when we got into it after a shaky start I though we played really well. And after seeing this game, I don't understand why so many are so critical of Skuse. I think he played really well, not only defensively, but also set up Murphy nicely on a few occasions. Skuse, Bishop and Hyam (superb goal, not only for finding the net, but also for staring the move) worked really well together and we struggled when that trio was broken up. Bru and Ambrose were nowhere as good when coming on. Chambers, Berra and Mings (great assist) also played really well and Gerkens save - when the defence somehow lost their positions and marking on the Wigan-corner completely - in the second half was brilliant. Nice to see Sammon score as well. Overall, I am very pleased.
Kentish Tractor. What a load of old rubbish. How can you say that Wigan were poor, true, they were not at their best, but still a tough side to beat. My MOM was Tyrone Mings closely followed by Luke Hyam.
A win on Saturday and surely TWTD will be soon reporting 'Mick McCarthy wins Championship Manager of the Month for September'! Can't remember the last time an Ipswich manager won that award...
