McCarthy Frustrated By Current Position
Monday, 9th Mar 2015 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says he would have been happy with Town's current position if it had been offered to him at the start of the season, but is less pleased now as the Blues were second in the table as recently as mid-January.

Asked whether he would have taken Town’s present situation of seventh, one point from the play-offs and five off the top two back in August, McCarthy chose his words carefully.

“For me to answer that question just straight away suggests I’m looking for a silver lining in the position that we’re in,” he said. “It’s always easier to say ‘We’d have been really happy with that’.

“Yes, we would at the start of the season but bearing in mind we were second however many games ago, I’m not happy with it.

“But, in answer to the question, at the beginning of the season we’d have all taken it, you included and every Ipswich fan would have taken it.

“It frustrates me that we are where we are. But that’s part of the game and it’s up to us to [get back in the top two or top six].

“We had a really good performance against Brentford and if we play like that then we should get enough points to be in the promotion scrap whatever it is, whether that’s the top two or the top six.”

Meanwhile, Town’s U21s are in action against Colchester United at Playford Road this afternoon (KO 1pm).

I think this sums up everyone's feeling perfectly, success fuels expectation, even MM is not immune!

Still not quite able to admit it is his stubbornness with team selection that is costing us!!

You're doing a great job on a shoestring Mick. But you're not getting the best out of what you have at the moment!!!

So do something about it man. Stop playing Chambers at full back. Stop playing Smith. Stop playing Tabb. Stop playing 4-4-2 as we don't have 4 midfielders good enough. Play with some width. And most of all STOP swearing at your own fans who might criticise your rediculous substitutions. Same time in every game. Same players off no matter how they're playing and worse, same players left in even though they're cr&p !!!!

I do wish we would be more positive at home, especially to go for the win towards the end of the match. You'd expect a play-off team to really put the opposition under pressure in the last 20 minutes of a game to try to get the win, but we too often seem to settle for the draw. Taking Sears off Saturday was one example, and playing two target men with no wingers to put in the crosses seemed strange to me. Tabb (31-year-old who played the full 90 minutes) ended up trying to be one the main attackers near the end Saturday.

The bottom line is we have punched above our weight this season. We need another 1 or 2 seasons to keep on building a strong squad that might be able to compete in the premier league. If we don't do this, we would come straight back down anyway.

McCarthy has come into lots of criticism on her over the last few weeks...but let's face it Murphy scores in an open goal from 6 yards out on Saturday and we beat Brentford 2-1 and would be in the play off's 3 points off of the top. Murphy scores that penalty at Leeds and that gap is 2 points. Not blaming Murphy at all, he's had an amazing season, my point is the Manager cannot take penalties or score open goals but the perception of his team selection is based on the outcome of those big moments in games...

Langdon blue - I actually had to sit down for a couple of minutes after reading your post as I felt really faint someone actually supporting Mick with everything he's done since he's been at the club. You only had to look at the highlights on the football league show to say we were all over Brentford they didn't look like scoring a second and we had lots of chances on another day you are right we would have one and been in the top six. Okay sometimes I don't agree with his team selections but we've had loads of injuries and he's had no money to spend on players and we are still in with a shout the play-offs. I just think each one of these posts is just an opportunity to slag everyone off at the club shame really because we're having the most memorable season for years.

Would anybody on here say Brentford were the better team Saturday?
We should have won that game (on clear cut chances) 4 - 2...
Now that suggests Mick got it right Saturday to an extent does it not?
As said above - unfortunately he cannot score the goals...

No s**t Mick!! Well maybe if you hadnt abandoned the attacking 4-3-3 and balanced back 4 we had during our BEST spell of the season we'd still be in the top 2!

Mick the problem is you my friend this hoofing the ball forward try keeping it on the ground by a way of passing it would a bit of a revolution for you Mick as you have never tried this style of football, by the way I am very happy to be in this position in the league with the players we have at this moment in time.

And that's why it will be an absolute travesty if we don't gain a play off place and I feel questions should be asked of Evans and Mick if we don't get in the play off's. All well and good saying it's part of the game, yea every team has a blip, but it's the aimless hoof ball and the fact you have reverted to the negative, defensive, rigid and highly predictable 4 4 2, when we were playing good football and achieving brilliant results playing the more attacking and fluid 4 3 3 system

Christ, we don't half have a lot of football-managers-in-the-making on this site.

Seriously, how can we as fans question what Mick has done here? To suggest that we should ask questions of him should we finish 7th is nothing short of ridiculous. Norwich have had £84,000,000 of money from the league/TV in 4 years, we have had £4,000,000. That right there is the difference. And we are doing it properly. And the academy is finally producing the goods again. We will finish up there. While I personally would go back to a 433 with Ando Skuse and Bishop as the middle three, I will not complain about how we line up, and unlike some here, will actually back and support the manager and team rather than barrack it

People are over reacting to other people's perceived over reaction, for me MM has done a great job at this club, long may it continue. I have not seen that many posts/threads where fans are calling for him to leave, what I am seeing is increasing frustration around team selection and tactics. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but it is clear to many that unless we can turn out current form around, be it by a change of luck, injured players returning, a tweak in our style of play but probably a bit of all of these we may well miss out on an extended end of season. MM has said in as many words that if that was the case it would be a big disappointment when you look back at how we had placed ourselves at the turn of the year.

Although results haven't gone our way recently, no w is the time to kick on and pick up some form.
History shows that teams who end up winning the play offs tend to have just made it in at the last moment and in great form. With 10 games remaining, if we can win seven of those we can have a very good chance of automatic promotion, if we win a minimum of five then atheist the play offs should be guaranteed.
I don't like all the negativity going around the terraces at the moment, yes MM is a stubborn ba*tard who continues to play certain players, yes we were in a great position in January and yes we have lost both derby games this season but...
This has been our most promising season for nearly a decade:
How long has it been since we last had a 20 goals a season striker?
How long has it been since we had no prima donnas in the squad?
How good is it that we have some fine youth players coming through and breaking into the starting 11.
Although recently dropped; I feel Bart is the finest GK we've had in years.
We've had more games screened by Sky this year than we have in the last 5 seasons combined.
We finally have players who are being scouted for £millions.
Our best players are signing long term contracts, this stabilises and settles the squad. Gone are the days of Clegg letting players leave for nothing.

Okay we're not quite yet the finished article. But we have a good structure of players, we have a good manager and coaching staff. If we don't go up then, fingers crossed, MM may finally be backed with some hard cash in the pre season.
Let's kick on now, get behind the team, whoever MM puts out, and really push for these last 10 games!
We could, theoretically, be 15 hours from the Premierleague.

Luka, only think questions should be asked due to the fact we were 2nd in the league at the turn of the year!!! Now whatever way you sugar coat it, our form since the turn of the year has taken a real nose dive!!! At the end of the season Evans and Mick should always evaluate it and see what went well and also went didn't go quite so well. Mick has done a great job with next to no resources, but my point, which clearly you missed, is that IF we finish outside the play off's at the end of the season then questions need to be asked as to why, based on the brilliant first half to the season!!! The alarming down turn in form, why did it happen and should it have been allowed to happen??

itfc1981 added 10:44 - Mar 9
Luka - whilst on that high moral pedestal did you never barrack Keane and Jewell then?

Constantly playing 442 with Chambers at and not Parr has proved one off the major errors any manager has made this last decade.

Mick is a god in the transfer market, but his tactics are like watching a oil tanker trying to turn. Obviously a tanker which has taken on water and is listing heavily on the starboard side.

punch_bowl added 10:48 - Mar 9
I was utterly disgusted at seeing Mick tell the fans to f*** off in the co-op stand, I have no support for him now, my official complaint has gone in, there's kids in that stand and I think others will complain too. Should be used to criticism, the Sears substitution was not liked by the fans, full stop.

How much longer do we have to put up with MM and his crap football.
What is the point of it all? Say we get into the Prem, we've still got a mediocre team playing football no one enjoys.
We've got a £10k team and it plays like it. If you watch any of the teams in with a chance of promotion they are the teams scoring goals and playing attacking attractive football.
We are likely to just miss out on a play off place but if we're very lucky we might just scrape a play off place.
Then what? We lose in the first round cos we can't score any goals and our one creative player is injured.
And then, next season even more of this dumb cheapskate hoofball, Year after year of MM and his Neanderthal hoofing...........................
When did we turn into such a horrible team. We might as well call ourselves Barnsley.

Geoff added 11:20 - Mar 9
Agree pennblue we would come straight back down, but we would then have premier money to rebuild and be on par with other clubs to compete for the quality that is available.

carsey added 11:31 - Mar 9
whatever team he puts out he should be attacking the opposition and making them play against us. He should be playing players in their natural positions. He has done a fantastic job getting us to where we are and raised our expectations but he has failed miserably to capitalize on the 1st half of the season.
I accept all the arguments and reasoning about clubs with greater financial clout and geographical location but I believe we have players good enough if played in the correct positions. MM is a tactical dinosaur who cannot or will change and that is the reason he couldn't keep Wolves or Sunderland in the Premier League and he won't keep Ipswich up either if we are lucky enough to get there.
