Varney Undergoing Surgery
Monday, 11th May 2015 17:09

Striker Luke Varney is undergoing surgery today having suffered a ruptured achilles during Saturday’s 1-1 Championship play-off semi-final first leg draw with Norwich City at Portman Road.

Varney, who is on loan with the Blues from Blackburn, was stretchered off in the 31st minute of the match.

Speaking immediately after the game manager Mick McCarthy said: “It’s a big blow for him and I haven’t got a player for next week and maybe for Wembley, who knows.

“It’s such a big blow for him. I’m so disappointed for him. You see any player do that, but a lad like him, it’s really disappointing.”

He added: “He’s been wonderful, he’s been a breath of fresh air coming in. He, like all the loanees, has really contributed. He’s just such a great guy, we’ll have to look after him and make sure he’s OK.”

The 32-year-old, who is out of contract at Ewood Park in the summer, joined the Blues in February and has made six starts and five sub appearances, scoring once.

Poor lad hope he make a quick and full recovery. I noticed loads of players slipping over on the surface what surprised me was even after players were slipping they continued to water the pitch

Good luck to him, that's a tough injury to get. I hope the surgery goes well & gets back playing football.
There have been few players, on loan or full signings, that have come into the club & been able to turn around the level of unformed negativity that greeted their arrival quicker than Luke Varney has.
Last Saturday was the most important game the club has played for 10 years and Luke Varney's inclusion in the starting XI was met with the approval of most fans. That's a tribute to his hard work, commitment & skill.
I wish him well.

I was sceptical when he first arrived, but he became a solid addition to our ranks. I was at Huddersfield for his goal and he's been unlucky not to have had a few more in his time here given the effort he's shown. Awful to see his spell end like that on Saturday, especially as I think he had strong designs on making Portman Road his home and was no doubt hoping to be part of what could yet be a very special playoff campaign.

Best of luck to you, Luke.

Absolutely gutted for him!, He's been a loan player that has given his all for the Town(unlike some who had a lovely meal ticket and did sod all!!!!) and from reading his comments was really enjoying being part of the set up, just hope he has a quick recovery and plays again at a decent level he deserves that for his whole hearted effort and persona. good luck what ever your future maybe Luke.

I also didn't rate him at first but he certainly proved me wrong. Well done Luke on becoming a player we will certainly miss on Saturday. I hope u do make a full recovery and play again next season.

Get well soon Reg. I don't think we've seen the last of you here. MM rates you and might think it's worth a punt to see if he can get you fit for the 2nd half of next season. All the best.

I wish him a speedy recovery. It really has come at the wrong time for him, being out of contract in the summer and for us, as we have only a very small squad with few options up front. All round bad news, but worse for him.

Terrible blow for him . As he is out of contract and. he got the injury playing for us perhaps we could give him a 6 month/1 year contract to tide him over until (hopefully) he gets fit again and then see where we go from there.

Unfortunately at his age to make a comeback from such a serious injury is going to be extremely difficult. I do hope as he is out of contract with Blackburn soon there is some insurance or something in place to help him as I can't see any one signing a player with such an injury. Has been a very good player for us so hope we look after him

Sad news this for Varney who has certainly done his bit for us, and was doing so again on Saturday.

Let's go to Norwich and win this tie for him - I've just watched and analysed every part of the game again, and again.
RESULT - Totally convinced we CAN go to Norwich and win it, the Norwich defence do not cope well under pressure and IF we attack we could well and truly do them.

They are a very capable team - BUT - only if you let them come at you.

ATTACK THEM FROM THE OFF - AND I HAVE NO DOUBT WE CAN WIN IT- for Reg, and everyone else.

I wish him all the best. I think I speak on behalf of most people when I say how surprisingly impressive he's been for us and I'm sure Mick will look after him and give him a chance to earn a contract. I thought he'd come here and make about 3 sub appearances and leave but he's been a very good addition and shows why we should trust the management.

Wishing Reg a speedy recovery.
Like a lot of MM's troops he took unnecessary stick when he came in, but he has played his part fully in helping in to the position we are in. Hope the entire recovery process goes 100% according to plan and he gets back on the pitch as soon as possible.
