Mings Agrees Terms With Cherries in £8m Deal
Thursday, 25th Jun 2015 15:51

Town left-back Tyrone Mings is understood to have agreed a four-year deal with Bournemouth after Town accepted their bid of £8 million, with Brett Pitman and winger Ryan Fraser both set to move in the opposite direction.

Mings has agreed the terms subject to a medical, having held talks with the Cherries this morning, after being given permission to speak to them yesterday.

The deal, which it's understood could potentially rise to £10 million after the usual milestone clauses and includes a sell-on, is expected to be confirmed on Friday.

While Bournemouth striker Pitman is, as reported earlier, expected to join the Blues in the next couple of days in what's a separate deal - a free transfer according to local media on the South coast - Scottish U19 and U21 international winger Fraser is also due to move to Town on loan for the season as part of the Mings move.

Fraser, 21, started his career with hometown club Aberdeen before joining the Cherries in a £400,000 deal in January 2013. Last season the 5ft 4in tall midfielder - who operates on either flank, primarily on the left - made 11 starts and 16 sub appearances, scoring two goals. He is contracted until the summer of 2016.

News that the Cherries were targeting Mings broke yesterday when SkyBet slashed the odds of the 22-year-old making the move to 1/6.

Mings was watched by most of the Premier League last season with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea strongly linked.

Crystal Palace had a £3.5 million offer turned down last summer, while Newcastle were reported to have made an enquiry last week when they were said to have been quoted an initial fee of £8 million, rising to £10 million, again once further clauses were taken into account.

The Bath-born full-back joined the Blues from non-league Chippenham for a now-famous fee of £10,000 in December 2012.

Former U18s coach Russell Osman brought him to Portman Road for a trial on the recommendation of his son Toby, a team-mate of Mings, who had been released by Southampton as a schoolboy.

The one-time mortgage advisor made 49 starts and 15 sub appearances for the Blues, scoring once.

Town manager Mick McCarthy and owner Marcus Evans have both said that they are determined to keep hold of the Blues' key players this summer, however with the Blues' spending power again limited by the Championship’s Financial Fair Play rules, selling a player for a big fee will give McCarthy far greater scope as he looks to strengthen ahead of the 2015/16 campaign.

The Mings and Fraser and Pitman deals are likely to be completed on Friday, while Arsenal youngster Ainsley Maitland-Niles is also expected to have his season-long loan confirmed.

Wow - sweet bit of Billy Business that
A young player with alot of talent - any deal we do has to include players and we have a good player in Pittman - not seen much of Fraser but well done MM and ME
I like Howe and what he had moulded down there at Bournemouth and hope they stay up
Play good football and a young English manager is a good thing
All the best Mings and welcome to Brett and Ryan - 80,000% profit - Not a bad return and as Verulam says be nice if a slice went down to Chippenham !

Can't argue with the numbers. Huge profit which will obviously help the finances. But the inescapable fact is that we will be losing our first choice LB. Jonny P may fill the gap but Ty was the no 1 man in that position last year. This may be how football works but a little bit of my soul is being sold off with this deal. I just don't like the fact that we are selling even at the price outlined. Like most on here I would prefer to keep the players we have and budget for an annual investment. The Bobby Robson years surely prove the benefits that accrue from the right investment. One, just one, premium signing each year, one that radically improves the squad is all that is needed. MM has done this with his signings to date. All we can do is try to keep faith with the Boss. Naive possibly but it keeps me interested.

My Bournemouth friends say that they did not expect to pay £8 mil - and that we have got a very good deal there. I tend to agree. After all, we are mainly selling potential ... and even in that I hope we have a sell on clause because it is just possible that Tyrone will sell for a lot more than £8 mil in the future.

But we have cashed in at the right price - if we had to cash in at all ... which we did, both cos we need the money and because he wanted PL football.

Pittman - nothing spectacular, but he DOES score goals - but what is the fee ... the story says it is NOT part of the deal but is separate. Fraser on loan is great - assuming he is played .. very much like Johnny Williams ,... fast, skilful and "busy" - will get fouled and earn free kicks all game! He also tracks back (ALSO - not INSTEAD) so will be a great addition ... plays on right usually despite being left footed

if murphy's still here in august I'll quit twtd, but that's not to say MM can't find a another frank nouble to hoof it up to.

Now I see that Sepp Blatter denies having resigned from the FIFA presidency. How much worse can it get?

Sorry - just re-read the article .... tip to self ... read FIRST post second !!

Has the rumoured "free transfer" been confirmed?
... if so this is EXCELLENT business - if Murphy is worth 7 figures then Pittman is worth 6 figures.

Eddie Howe -- thank you !

The phrase which keeps repeating is 'good business for town'. We have lost a cultured footballer. There is certainly no reason to think that the money will be reinvested bearing in mind recent history. Yes - good business for ME but while we keep selling our best footballers with no indication that we will once again become a passing team it's hardly good business for ITFC

Mark14 I feel your pain. There are a few on here who like to be seen as the saviours of our legacy. The ones who'll stand up for our glorious past.

And yet supporting a glorious past is merely nostalgia - easy to have a rose tinted view of. Its far more difficult to stick with your team when it's going through a rough patch. Those of us who do are slated on here as being gullible and MM excuse makers.

All I can say to you Mark14 my friend is this; the usual nonsense that is winding you up now is from the usual moaners who will never ever be happy supporting Ipswich. No matter what the club does, or what the manager says you will ALWAYS have the same old same olds on here moaning about it. They can't help themselves.

Blue041273 if you are in the 2nd division then you can't keep all your players and add new ones like Bobby Robson did in the 1st division, especially with the 30+ years changes. It happened under Burley each year we missed out we sold one. Also if you remember the years after Burley relegation, we sold players for a pittance!!!!!!!! Gardsoe, Ambrose, Herriadarsson, Clapham, Marcus etc etc etc. Now however, one summer sale is to be expected.

I suspect you might see Matt Clarke contest the LB berth. If he's going to make it he needs to start playing.

Although I wasnt't the biggest fan of Mings, I'm sad to see him go. He's genuinely a good egg and alround nice guy in a world filled with arrogant, greedy idiot footballers. Good luck lad.

MVBlue, Why not? We get players in season after season mostly on loan and let them go at the end of every season. Throughout the Burley years we improved the squad at what was not even then a massive cost. We had years of value from the likes of Matt Holland, Herman Hreidarsson, Jamie Clapham, Jim Magilton, Marcus Stewart as well as bringing players like Richard Naylor, Kieron Dyer, Titus Bramble and Richard Wright through the youth team ranks. Plus we had the cult heroes like John McGreal, Alex Mathie and Ian Marshall to sustain our support. With such players we were constantly acknowledged contenders. Like SBR, George chose to (and was allowed to) develop a squad over time instead of adopting a slash and burn policy at the end of every season. I truly feel sorry for MM because he has to resort to loanees to a) make up the numbers and b) generate interest in the support in order to sell a few more tickets. However we are now left with a situation now where we are light on squad numbers and no real promise that we will have a better team than last season, one that is capable of challenging at the top of the division. I am not criticising anybody but I would much prefer to go into a season with a team that is improving and likely to improve further. Selling Mings, or Murphy, or Bishop, or McGoldrick or Berra as some have suggested is not the way forward IMO. We may save on wages during the summer but it just takes a scythe to our possibilities of doing anything next season. Of course it's early days and I might yet be pleasantly surprised by improvements to the squad but I'm not holding my breath. But just one big name signing this summer might give us something to look forward to!

Great piece of business. Some of the 8 million will hopefully go to a few new players which can do for us what the sale of Dyer did last time the team got promoted.
It always hurts to see players leave. I hated it when the great team we had in the early 80's was torn apart with Mariner, Mills, Brazil, Wark, Muhren, Thijssen, Butcher, Osman... you name them leaving. But then we lost a whole team to build a new stand. Now we lose one player to improve the team.
And for those who would rather see Fraser sign instead of being a loan - I see him as a signing, unless the loan has a recall clause. He will be here for a season and when it is over his contract with Bournemouth is at an end and he is a free agent for us to sign if he has done well.
As for fullbacks - it could be time for Kyle Hammond and Matt Clarke to make those positions their own, just as Teddy Bishop did in midfield. Just another hopeful wish.
But I believe we will see more signings coming in Before the season starts.

I jsut worry that McGoldrick looks so dis, interested now, he seems a shadow of the player he was, hope i,m wrong, really do, but i watch his body language and its just does not seem right anymore!, but Mingys going had to be good business, especially with the new lads coming in, Pitman known goal scorer!

despite finishing in the top six I can't see anyone wanting to sign for us as we haven't got a team let alone a squad that can challenge for anything. with something near £8m to sign some talent, we'll see if ME has any ambition for ITFC or whether it is just a tax avoidance scam.
