McCarthy: We Deserved to Win Tuesday, 25th Aug 2015 23:18 Town boss Mick McCarthy felt the Blues deserved their 4-1 Capital One Cup second round victory at Doncaster even if he wasn’t pleased that the match went to extra-time. “I wouldn’t say that extra-time was the last thing I wanted, the last thing I wanted was to lose, but extra-time was the next last thing,” he said. “But I think we deserved it. I thought we started really well and then we gave three freekicks away which brought problems on us and they ended up scoring from the third one. “I thought they had a decent spell at the end of the first half but we had chances, we had some good chances as well. “At the start of the second half I thought they had a good spell and then once we got our equaliser I think it was mainly us after that.” McCarthy was delighted with man of the match David McGoldrick: “He’s played well, I’m really pleased with Didzy, he got his goal, two goals now. “That helped him because I think he was getting a little bit frustrated at times. But he’s a good player, isn’t he? We just need him back full tilt.” The Town boss also had praise for his two debutants: “Adam McDonnell was excellent for a debut in there, playing against two good players, Richie Wellens and Chappers, so I thought he did really well. “James Alabi is a handful. He’s got something, he’s as raw as anything but he’s got something and scoring on his debut will help him no end.” He says he thought about bringing Ryan Fraser on late on during the 90 minutes: “I was tempted in the last minutes of normal time but there were one or two that were struggling so I knew I was going need a sub. “As it turned out it was the sub I was going to make, I was going to take Adam off but he got through the full game. He’s a great player to have but a fabulous sub to come on.” Regarding Larsen Touré giving his shirt away to a fan at the end of the 90 minutes, he added: “He needs help! We’ll have to get him some treatment or something. “I think some of the fans were telling him, one or two of them would have liked his shirt but I think they realised that he might have to play on with it. One of the two players told him as well. It’s funny now. “He was great, I think he’s a really good player for us. Similar to Kevin Bru, he came in on trial, he’s a pal of Kevin Bru’s, and I think he’s going to really good for us. I’m delighted with him.” Speaking prior to the draw which saw the Blues paired with Manchester United at Old Trafford, he said he’ll continue to field his young players in the competition: “I’m delighted to have won the game, I didn’t want to lose it and whoever we play it’ll be Josh and [the other youngsters]. “But hopefully we’ll have Kevin Bru back and Bish back and there’ll be a few coming back, so we can make it an even stronger squad because we don’t need any injuries, that’s for sure.” McCarthy wouldn’t be drawn on the situation with any additions to his squad with Polish defender Piotr Malarczyk understood to have been at the club for talks.
