McCarthy: Not Too Much Wrong With Performance
Monday, 26th Oct 2015 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy felt there wasn’t too much wrong with Town's performance in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest but admitted it was a “horrible feeling” to have taken a point rather than three from the match after conceding Liam Trotter’s equaliser in the 95th minute.

“I don’t think [there was too much wrong in the performance],” he said. “It’s bizarre that I’m stood here feeling like I’ve lost a tenner and found sixpence for some reason.

“It’s just a horrible feeling. There was nothing I could say to placate the boys and nothing that’s really that’s going to placate me until we finally win a game.

“But [I’ll be pleased with] the performance when I look back at it on Tuesday morning, because I won’t be in on Monday we’re going to watch Cardiff, me and TC.

“The lads are all in and then we’ll be in the rest of the week working on what we’re going to do for Cardiff.”

The Bluebirds, who are at Portman Road on Saturday as Town look to return to winning ways after six league games without a victory, face Bristol City at the Cardiff City Stadium this evening. The Welshmen are currently eighth, three points and five places above the Blues.

McCarthy added: “I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with team spirit, there’s nothing wrong with camaraderie, there’s nothing wrong with players, the club’s in really good shape.

“I said the other night that we’ve been having a tough time but, by the way, we played a team which came out of the Premier League on Tuesday and we’ve come [to Forest] and had a really good performance against a team of good players.

“For all the story of transfer embargoes and not being able to sign players, they’ve got a really good squad of players.”

Meanwhile, Town’s U21s are in action against Crystal Palace at Playford Road this afternoon (KO 1pm).

managers should sit in the stands where they can actually see what's going on.

"Not much wrong with the performance"

Just the lack of goals we score and the amount, and way, we let them in, it's perfect!

Brilliant support at Forest by us fans that went, I can't vouch for the team spirit but even with the amount of criticism for Mick it's brilliant that we put it aside and support the team. I hope MM appreciates the passion we have for the club which is precisely the reason why we're frustrated with him and at this season which is slowly slipping away, we had such high hopes in the summer.

Maybe not, but one win in nine just isn't good enough Mick.

Team spirit & camaraderie are essential but don't win you football matches. The correct players & tac tics win you football matches

I am sure you could take training in the morning (10-12?) at Ipswich and leave in time to get to Cardiff for a night match.
TC's training ground magic not required by our strikers today?

Sorry to get a few down arrows for this but the problem isn't MM. Its the expectations of a number of fans about our team.

So many people were going on and on about a top 6 place at the start of the season when its clear that we are a mid-table squad. Other teams overwhelm our midfield and its unfair to expect the defence to last out for that long game after game. Its no wonder we use hoofball so much as its an attempt to relieve the massive pressure on our defence.

I really don't know how many people here actually go to the games. I went and we (perhaps) created 3 good chances the entire game. Most of the time Forest were dominant and there was a period in the first half where we barely had the ball over the course of 20 minutes. It was a very encouraging performance from their perspective and they should feel proud of how they played. Forest fans cheered every pass they made and were 100% behind their team.

Meanwhile our defence worked overtime trying to keep them out. Gerken was superb until extra time. Chambers played a great game at rb. Even Douglas played well when he came on.
This was one of the best defensive performances I have seen from us in some time. Our midfield was woeful for periods yet somehow our defence held out.

I regard them all as heroes, regardless of the result. I'm happy that we are 7 points clear of relegation especially given the players we have. We can't expect to compete with some of the top guns in this division. These players are giving everything they can and are playing to the best of their ability.

Unfortunately setting your stall out every ime we play away for a point and nothing more costs us as it has done in the point and if you can only muster 3 shots on the opponents' goal then that is really the limit of our intentions...and we are paying the price. Under MM we are a tactically very, very limited side and history shows that this division favors the brave but he is not prepared to risk but relies instead on route 1 football.
He dropped an almighty clanger in the team selection against Man Utd when we should have gone hell for leather to get a result but it just showed up his lack of guile and bravery and his play off record is appalling but befits a manager who is afraid to risk or be daring and alter a game plan.
I have been saying for a couple of years now that a different approach is needed desperately now if we want to get out of this division and I am not sure he is the man to lead us any more if he is not prepared to change radically. We do need to ramp it up considerably otherwise it will be another wasted season and Saturday's game was a case in point - once again, we were caught napping in the last seconds against Nottm Forest...what does he tell them beforehand ? Caught out time and time again...

Well pauljewellisgod, i am most definitely not happy with 7 points clear of relegation! at this rate we will be in relagation battle b4 xmas. Its just wrong to settle for second tier survival, we should not be happy with this in any shape or form!

Heroes, really on what grounds?

That is what is wrong with the club, too many people happy with second rate football crap results and zero entertainment!

What nonsense, I went Saturdsy. How many 1st team players did Forest have missing through injury / suspension ?? 5 or 6 ?? There were there for the taking, yet we had 3 shots on target all game. Everytime we looked to counter attack we turned back again. In the 1st half every time they attacked they looked like scoring. MM needs to address our attacking prowess quickly as we have been giving away silly goals all of 2015 and we don't look like scoring, if this continues we we are going to be fighting at the wrong end of the table.

Couldn't agree more Mm I ask one thing play Bart in goal so all the Germination sagged will see there's as many faults in him as in Germany 2nd move Chambers to CO so all the knockers it won't make much difference as in The Brighton game agree PJ god except didn't think the forest fans made much noise except at start.

Are you kidding Mick? That was an absolute bore fest to watch. You talk like we were peppering the goal and hit the post 5 times!!! If we were playing anyone currently in the top 6 we would have been battered on that performance. Equally any team in the top 6 would have completely battered Forest as they were abysmal.

Personally I don't think you can blame Gerken alone for dropping the points. Did Chambers actually make a tackle in the whole game?!! He doesn't seem to want to go to ground, however the opposition just walk round him anyway so he may as well not be there. McGoldrick should have sealed the points but blazed miles over and he was also involved with that rather embarrassing 'ole' football trying to keep the ball in the corner with 10 minutes to go and losing it. Murphy just doesn't look like he is interested in playing - where was he playing anyway, left wing?! and Sears is massively low in confidence, taking an extra touch every time he is in front on goal.

THAT WAS NOT A GOOD PERFORMANCE MICK!!

Quote "McCarthy added: “I don't believe there's anything wrong with team spirit, there's nothing wrong with camaraderie, there's nothing wrong with players, the club's in really good shape."

Those words sound similar to the utterances of the Captain of the Titanic.

I was there on Saturday, and our problems were clear to see. I can't remember a single shot on target first half. Their keeper can rarely have had an easier Saturday. We did look better in the 2nd half, and it was horrible to concede in 95th minute. However, I don't think we deserved to be in front, and I'm really concerned for the remainder of the season.

flashblue that's a very good point you make about managers sitting in the stand.
It must be very difficult to see what is happening from ground level.
I recall Sir Alex often sat in the stands (unless he needed to put pressure on the officials)

McCarthy OUT. What is wrong is you McCarthy. Your ridiculous team selection - expect Chambers and Gerkin will be putting extra wax on your car this week, your tactics, substitutions and worst of all your style of play which kills the game.
There are several good progressive managers available at the moment - get out of our club and let us have a decent one. Go and save Yeovil or some club like that (no offence Yeovil fans) - that is your level - kicking the ball in the air and not having a right back may be ok there - and presumably you would not be able to leave better players on the bench.

When a certain young manager was chosen to manage our club he didn't have a glowing CV but he did have youth, enthusiasm, passion and a belief in playing proper football, that was Sir Bobby.
Now, I wonder, is there a similar young manager looking for a position now?

Mm I obviously trying to keep the players confidence up
The side he picked Saturday apart from Bart, was arguably the best we have available, and nowhere near good enough for this league. Whether you blame mm or Evans or both. Those are the facts of the situation

@flashblue Great point,I was thinking the same thing this morning that maybe Mick should watch a couple of our matches from the stand just to see where we/he are going wrong..with maybe someone alongside him to point out the glaringly obvious..any volunteers??

I didn't go Saturday so have only seen the high-lights which say it all. No high-light of a town shot on target in the first half.
Looks to me like Gerkin made the wrong decision to come off his line given there are 2 town defenders there and Berra would probably have won the ball. Gerkin looks to me like he jumped too early and didn't get a proper fist on the ball - would have been better off staying on his line.
In the end we shot ourselves in the foot again not being able to keep hold of the ball and pass it around.
Hate the style and hate the tactics McCarthy has the team playing but can't see it changing anytime soon.

@PJewellisgod, extremely alarming post that !
Is that how you view our club, fending off relegation, and regarding these players as heroes, grabbing points here and there? Surely you wouldn't regard players such as Berra, Parr,Chambers, McGoldrick and Murphy as 'Rotherham standard players '? McCarthy has done a more than reasonable job since his arrival, and progression has been a common factor, with that said, how do you explain your assessment this season, were previous progression flukes?
This season the manager has 4 decent strikers, unlike previous seasons, although unlucky with injuries to midfield, many managers would be happy to have Bru, Fraser, Bishop and Skuse to call upon.
For me, the manager failed to recruit a leader in the middle of park, and a right back. That's about it, he obviously doesn't see it that way, and until he does, our weaknesses will continually be exposed. How many clubs continually play their captain out of position?
