Foley Delighted to Join Town
Friday, 22nd Jan 2016 12:07

Full-back Kevin Foley says he's delighted to have joined Town, having put pen to paper on a contract to the end of the season, and could be involved in the Blues’ squad at Birmingham tomorrow if his international clearance is confirmed in time.

International clearance is required as the 31-year-old former Ireland, Wolves and Luton man’s last club was FC Copenhagen in Denmark.

“This is a great club and I’m delighted to be here,” Foley told Ipswich Player HD.

“It’s taken a bit of time due to the international clearance and stuff but I’m just happy it’s done now.

“I really enjoyed my time here anyway and a door sort of opened up for me once Jonny Parr departed.

“I know the gaffer and TC from our days at Wolves and it’s great to work with them again. They know what I’m all about and likewise I know how they work.”

Foley had been on trial while Parr’s exit to Strømsgodset back in his native Norway was ongoing and featured in an U21s game before McCarthy handed him his deal at the start of last week.

“He’s like anybody, he’ll need games to get to that level of fitness to be battle-hardened that you get through playing games,” the Town boss said a week ago.

During Foley’s trial he recalled how he came to take the Londoner to Molineux in 2007: “He played against us for Luton at Wolves and at the time we had some good wide players, Matt Jarvis and Michael Kightly, and he saw them all off.

“I signed him on the back of that and he was different class for me. He’s a great bloke, he’d fit in fabulously with the lads, if he’s all right, if he’s fully fit, but he looks it.

“He’s trained with us and he looks the part at the moment, so hopefully he’ll get through the game today.

“He was out playing in Denmark, he hurt his shoulder and he had to have an operation in the summer. That doesn’t bother me too much. If it was his legs it might be bothering me, but it was his shoulder.

“He’s a gentleman, he’s a lovely fella, he’d fit in perfectly with the rest of the lads. I hope he proves that he’s worth it.”

I see this as a Fraser Richardson type signing, back up if required.

"Hopefully he'll get through the game today".

Sounds like Foley may get some game time today. Good luck son.

Good luck to him, but in a time when we should be looking to strengthen, has this signing improved us? Parr out, a 31 year old who hasn't played since last season in. Improvement? Probably in terms of money saved/gained, but in terms of squad. Not in my opinion. Underwhelming.

Welcome & good luck Kevin. No doubt some will write you off because you didn't cost millions even though you haven't played yet! Will provide experience & cover in fullback position similar to Parr was. Has been injured so may not have played much recently but then neither had Parr!

All the best mate but we still need to add quality and not quite sure your what we need (certainly not to replace Parr) but won't judge you until we see you play.

Always happy to welcome a new player to the club even it is as many suggest a back up player and one with experience. However, it does amaze me how a club like ours why we fail to invest some real money in players that may help propel us into the premier league.
We were promotion hopefuls last season and again look to be promotion hopefuls this year, unfortunately though hopeful is all we will ever be if we don't delve into the clubs deep pockets. Free be players as cover I can accept but no investment suggests to me that some are happy playing season after season in this league, the longest serving championship side club, not the greatest record to have!

We've been fortunate to have suffered few injuries at the back this season, but if that were to change I'm sure we'd all be pleased to have someone of Foley's experience to act as cover.

Let's not forget that the club didn't want Parr to leave and we seem to have found a suitable replacement in little to no time, with minimal fuss and for no transfer fee.

PS @Guentchev: The "Hopefully he'll get through the game today" line was part of the quote from MM at the time of Foley's trial - there is no game today.
