Alabi Joins Chester Friday, 29th Jan 2016 17:38 Former Town striker James Alabi has joined Vanarama National League side Chester, having left the Blues by mutual consent yesterday.
Alabi, who was with Grimsby on loan before Christmas, has signed a contract until the end of the season.
The 21-year-old is set to make his debut at Braintree Town - with whom Town keeper Michael Crowe is on loan - on Saturday.
Alabi joined the Blues as a member of Mark Kennedy’s development squad having been released by Stoke in the summer, signing a one-year deal with an option for a second season.
His only first-team appearance was as a sub in the Capital One Cup tie at Doncaster in August in which he scored, giving him the unique Town records of making just one appearance and scoring in that single game and netting a senior goal for the club without playing a game at Portman Road.
While with Grimsby (pictured) Alabi made two starts and three sub appearances, scoring two FA Trophy goals.

Seem to end up signing trialists who are not good enough and won't even get a sniff at the first X1. Can only presume we will end up mid table . Every team in the division seems to be spending and adding quality to their squad.Wolves spend 3m on Jo Mason, Sheffield Wednesdy 3m on gary hooper, middlesborough offering 9m + for mcCormack or even more for Rhodes etc ,etc. Derby spend and on and on it goes. I'm not a fan of spending for spending sake but if average players keep coming in and then going we must accept ,whether we like it or not , we will be an average side finishing in an average league position ( but with superb fans)

If other teams keep spending stupid money on those sorts of players, surely that will leave very good players who are unhappy and looking for a respectable club to go and play first team football. I agree that it seems to be the case now that to get the big bucks in the prem, you need to spend beyond your means in the champ, but surely there is still a place for a team like us to go quietly about our business and pick up the right sort of player who is unhappy at their current club. I have faith that we are a genuine club who can achieve promotion, a bit like Bournemouth last season. Just need to sort out out leaky defence!!

Our transfer strategy is completely wrong. We are being left behind. Alabai has probably found his level, but according to Milne and MM we had a great strong squad. Reality is we signed a lot of cheap, substandard players. Shame.

@jas0999 why is it completely wrong? Guess you've only supported town in the last 3 years? Don't you remember Keane, even burley in the premiership throwing money at players that got us nowhere? Spen

Clubs have to take a punt on players with potential either to sell on at a profit or to play in their league tem. It's part of the business mix. The success rate is not high but sometimes you hit a nugget. I'll be interested to see what they make of Paul Digby, for example.

And now we have to look at him all month as he's on the February page of the ITFC official calendar. I've just had a month of looking at Parr! :-)

3 starts. 3 goals. I'd be happy with that!

Alabi was effectively replaced by Varney, Parr by Foley and Jerome Thomas is on trial with a view to replacing Oar. All carried out with minimal fuss and expense. I think some fans would only be happy if we'd splashed out £3M on each of them.

@Mark: Who's Mr March? I bet he's getting a bit nervous!

How's Varney a replacement for Alabi? Varney's been here a full season... Zero chance Alabi was signed as cover until Varney was fit.

Good luck to him. At 21 he still has time to work his way up through the leagues. However, we need 'instant impact' players.

Just hope Coke joins our list of exiting players. "Coke joins Norwich City for 500,000 in shock move". Now that'd be a great headline!

And I can't see how Thomas, who couldn't get a contract at Hearts or Yeovil, will be an adequate replacement for Oar. Surely we could use Henshall or Stewart instead if we are that desperate? (Both of whom are on high salaries). We have 13 players who are Championship/potential Premiership Class. When we get injuries to those individuals we are often reliant on National League players (aka Coke) to come in and perform. Players like these should be at Chester or Braintree and it's really unfair to expect these players to come in and be able to compete. It's obvious that they can't. They are on a hiding to nothing. I still firmly believe we need to spend a bit on 3 top players (a right back, a creative midfielder and a back up holding defensive midfielder) to be in for a shot at the top 6. Some of our rivals have brought in awesome talent whilst we look at league 2 released players or worse players who haven't been able to find a club for months and are thinking about retirement.

When will reality set in? We are 86m in debt to the owner, generated by operating losses / past management spending. We are finally "breaking even" in the last couple of seasons (with the aid of a couple of player sales). The club's in question spending are, like it or not, generating higher revenue with larger attendence than us or have ownership prepared to gamble their future by heavy spending. Despite all this we are challenging with these clubs yet some are still moaning that our current management is doing a bad job?!

Given the resources at our disposal we are punching above our weight..however to continue to recruit players who don't or probably can't cut in at championship level is a waste of those resources and a clear sign that our recruitment policy as I have said many times is flawed....we did not have a shed load of money when Burley was here but when we spent we did due diligence on the players not only on ability but character too...not to say there was not a few wrong uns when we did have some cash eg Finedi George Matteo Sereni ...but at the moment we could field a team of wrong uns...The Freddie Sears of this world are out there ..Matt Holland was one also. I don't want us to spend for the sake of it..JET would be a great example but recruit better please ITFC
