Pre-Season Friendly at Cambridge
Friday, 10th Jun 2016 17:25

Town will play Cambridge United in a pre-season friendly at the Abbey Stadium on Saturday 23rd July (KO 3pm).

Last summer, goals from Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Brett Pitman (pictured) and David McGoldrick saw the Blues to a 3-2 friendly victory against the U’s, who are now managed by one-time Town target Sean Derry. Barry Corr and Luke Berry netted for the League Two side.

The Blues' first-team pre-season programme would now appear to be complete with Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise having announced that they have accepted an invitation to face Town in the traditional final friendly at Portman Road.

A list of the fixtures announced is available here.

Some fans wont be happy with this or colchester game but I love anything to do with itfc.
I may not be happy with the way the club is run, or by the way mick wants to play, but I cant change anything and I wont turn my back on ITFC.

well said essexbluey. My sentiments exactly. Don't think fans will be happy with friendly fixtures anyway as the promised "big team" didn't come through. With average 500-800 attendances Royale Union aren't exactly that. We have a fixture away at Hadleigh on the same day as Cambridge and I hear "rumours" that we may have an away XI at Southwold.

,,,,,,,, another severe pre season test - should know where we are / stand after all these high level friendlies.

Not so sure we should be playing such testing opposition pre season.

Portman Road closed this summer! Can't afford to open it up.

It's hard to know what Mick is thinking. Maybe by playing weaker opposition it will give us a good confidence boost before the beginning of the season?

I looked at the Belgium club and they are overjoyed to be playing a club from the English Championship. It sounds like a huge step up for them and they've made a video of us.

Risky strategy. The Championship will be really tough this season and next as the gulf between the Premiership and the Championship widens. The Premiership virtually have all control now, including being able to enter u21 teams in other competitions. We really need to get promotion this season, the gulf is now starting to make things desperate. If we can go up and down that's fine, but we need the finance.
