U18s Win Silverware in Holland Sunday, 14th Aug 2016 00:08 Town’s U18s carried off the silverware at the Zilveren Botter Toernooi hosted by Dutch side FC Volendam on Saturday. The young Blues, Volendam’s U19s and Groningen’s U19s each played one another twice in games lasting 30 minutes. Town beat Volendam 1-0 - Callum Fullwood netting the goal - and drew 0-0 in the other fixture between the sides, while their games against Groningen ended 1-1 and 0-0, skipper Travis Cole (pictured) scoring the goal in the first match. Groningen and Volendam drew their matches 0-0 and 1-1. Cole was presented with the trophy by Blues legend Arnold Muhren, who started his career with Volendam, his hometown club, where he has also worked as a coach. The Blues’ youngsters, who this season are coached by Alan Lee and Chris Hogg, have been in Holland since August 1st, based at ADO Den Haag, and previously played two games, a 3-2 loss to their hosts and a 1-0 defeat at AZ Alkmaar. The trip to Holland was organised by League Football Education (LFE), while youngsters from Accrington Stanley, Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers and Shrewsbury Town have also travelled across the North Sea to spend time with Dutch clubs.
Subsidised by the Erasmus+ fund, the LFE say the aim was to “promote development and the exchange of ideas between coaches and players in both countries”. While in Holland the Town squad took part in training sessions run by ADO Den Haag coaches, spent time in Amsterdam and also travelled to Rotterdam to watch Ajax beat Sparta 3-1. U18s squad: Hayes, Wright, Salaudeen, Cathline, Woolfenden, Webber, Marshall, Meldrum, McGavin, Cole, Lankester, Nydam, Daniels, Cahill, Murrell, Fullwood, Wilton.
