Burnley Duo on McCarthy's Wish List
Sunday, 28th Aug 2016 16:57

Burnley pair Lukas Jutkiewicz and Michael Kightly are on Mick McCarthy’s list of potential signings ahead of the transfer window's closure on Wednesday, TWTD understands.

McCarthy is looking to add a direct replacement for Daryl Murphy, who completed his move to Newcastle earlier today, while the Blues boss is also keen on signing another wideman.

The duo, who each have a year left on their contracts, are currently out of the regular first XI at Turf Moor but their availability will depend on Burnley adding to their squad before the window closes at 11pm on Wednesday.

Kightly, 30, was with Tottenham as a youngster and moved on to hometown club Basildon United and then Southend before making his mark in non-league with Grays Athletic, with whom he won the FA Trophy.

In 2006 Town boss Mick McCarthy took him to Wolves, where he was a key player in their 2008/09 Championship title-winning season.

Kightly

Former England U21 international Kightly moved on to Stoke City in August 2012, then joined Burnley on loan in September 2013 and helped them to second spot in the Championship and into the Premier League.

He made the move permanent the following summer and was a member of the squad which, following their relegation in the previous campaign, topped the Championship last season to return to the top flight.

This season Kightly’s only appearance was in the 1-0 EFL Cup loss to Accrington Stanley last Wednesday.

Southampton-born striker Jutkiewicz, 27, was a youth player with his hometown club before moving on to Swindon where he made his first senior appearances late in the 2005/06 season.

His performances for the Robins caught the eye of Everton, who signed him for £1 million in March 2007.

While at Goodison Park Jutkiewicz made one senior sub appearance and spent time on loan at Plymouth, Huddersfield and Motherwell before joining Coventry City on a permanent basis in July 2010.

After 18 months at the Ricoh Arena - where he scored 18 goals in 61 starts and eight sub appearances - the 6ft 1in tall frontman moved to Middlesbrough, initially on loan before the clubs agreed a £1.3 million fee. During his time on Teesside Jutkiewicz scored 15 goals in 52 starts and 19 sub appearances.

Having spent the end of 2013/14 on loan at Bolton, where he scored seven times in 16 starts and four games from the bench, Jutkiewicz joined Burnley in July 2014 for £1.5 million.

Having failed to find the net during 10 starts and 16 sub appearances in the Clarets’ 2014/15 Premier League season, Jutkiewicz’s 2015/16 was curtailed at the end of August when he suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury.

He returned to U21s action at the end of the season and this term has made two brief sub appearances in the Premier League in addition to a start in the EFL Cup game against Accrington.

I think we should be able to do much better than this! Do we have any overseas scouts or is it all done on the Internet?

Have never rated Jutkiewicz when seeing him play and Kightly seems like he's past his best, but I suppose this is the best we can hope for from an unambitious owner?

Is there a rule that were only allowed to sign players from MM's Wolves team? I'd rather sing someone who's doing well in the lower leagues but then I suppose so would every other club so it isn't easy

No thank you, kaikai please.

But if we insist on going for these two please make them permanent signings not loans.

I would take jutkiewicz seen him a few times for Burnley and he's what people were asking for. A pretty much direct replacement for Murph and he's 6 years younger ...

Kightly looks good as backup/Squad player will help us build squad numbers

Jutkiewicz if he gets the service will do well for us... (He was good on FM Scored 25 goals in my save)

these 2 won't cost much then get young hunger strikers 18-21 will do

I think we can do alot better than Jutkiewitz, but it depends how much money Mick has been given by the ridiculous owner! Kightly would add some directness I believe though!

I'd take Kightly for sure, decent player and got good experience. Jutkiewicz on the other hand would be an awful signing in my opinion. Every time I've seen him play live or on TV he has been terrible. Really really underwhelming if this is the best the club can attract, a real down grade on Murphy. The fans need a lift after all this negative news :(

Not overly I riding, but let's see what happens. For once transfer deadline day could be interesting.

Looks like the Murphy money will be invested the same way as the Cresswell and Mings money was. With all the ins and outs I do not think the team is any better or stronger than last season. Will any new players displace the regulars......I doubt it.

A bit underwhelming. Kightly was a decent player but he's getting on a bit now and Jutkiewicz (probably easier to spell after a few beers) is uninspiring. You never know, he may well thrive with our style of play, however, it's not an immediate name that comes to mind when thinking of a 20 goals a season frontman. We shall see..

Much in agreement with many of the other comments here. Would happily take Kightly but I have never seen much from Jutkiewicz to feel he's a suitable replacement for Murphy. Seems a very 'middle-range' target to me when we're letting go of a player who just over a year ago was the most prolific striker in the Championship.

Invest in the future please. Some up-and-coming lower league players or overseas players would be preferable.

Jutkiewicz has never really inspired me but then Murphy didn't seem a very exciting signing when we first signed him and he turned out to be very good business. Managers must have seen some sort of potential in Jutkiewicz over the years as some decent clubs have signed him. Maybe ,if he is the one, he'll thrive as the main man, just as DM has.

Oh my
An ex MM favourite who was once a key player 8 years ago!! and a forward who hasn't scored in his last 28 appearances .....and here was me thinking we would spend the money wisely .......how can this management team pick up a steal like ward and then be interested in players like this

....absolutely bonkers

We need to be looking at lower league teams for a young striker that TC can work his magic on someone like Jack Marriott of Luton who is banging them in and would only cost the club 500k to resign him !

Murphy was hardly prolific before joining. Give him a chance
