Burnley Duo on McCarthy's Wish List
Sunday, 28th Aug 2016 16:57

Burnley pair Lukas Jutkiewicz and Michael Kightly are on Mick McCarthy’s list of potential signings ahead of the transfer window's closure on Wednesday, TWTD understands.

McCarthy is looking to add a direct replacement for Daryl Murphy, who completed his move to Newcastle earlier today, while the Blues boss is also keen on signing another wideman.

The duo, who each have a year left on their contracts, are currently out of the regular first XI at Turf Moor but their availability will depend on Burnley adding to their squad before the window closes at 11pm on Wednesday.

Kightly, 30, was with Tottenham as a youngster and moved on to hometown club Basildon United and then Southend before making his mark in non-league with Grays Athletic, with whom he won the FA Trophy.

In 2006 Town boss Mick McCarthy took him to Wolves, where he was a key player in their 2008/09 Championship title-winning season.

Kightly

Former England U21 international Kightly moved on to Stoke City in August 2012, then joined Burnley on loan in September 2013 and helped them to second spot in the Championship and into the Premier League.

He made the move permanent the following summer and was a member of the squad which, following their relegation in the previous campaign, topped the Championship last season to return to the top flight.

This season Kightly’s only appearance was in the 1-0 EFL Cup loss to Accrington Stanley last Wednesday.

Southampton-born striker Jutkiewicz, 27, was a youth player with his hometown club before moving on to Swindon where he made his first senior appearances late in the 2005/06 season.

His performances for the Robins caught the eye of Everton, who signed him for £1 million in March 2007.

While at Goodison Park Jutkiewicz made one senior sub appearance and spent time on loan at Plymouth, Huddersfield and Motherwell before joining Coventry City on a permanent basis in July 2010.

After 18 months at the Ricoh Arena - where he scored 18 goals in 61 starts and eight sub appearances - the 6ft 1in tall frontman moved to Middlesbrough, initially on loan before the clubs agreed a £1.3 million fee. During his time on Teesside Jutkiewicz scored 15 goals in 52 starts and 19 sub appearances.

Having spent the end of 2013/14 on loan at Bolton, where he scored seven times in 16 starts and four games from the bench, Jutkiewicz joined Burnley in July 2014 for £1.5 million.

Having failed to find the net during 10 starts and 16 sub appearances in the Clarets’ 2014/15 Premier League season, Jutkiewicz’s 2015/16 was curtailed at the end of August when he suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury.

He returned to U21s action at the end of the season and this term has made two brief sub appearances in the Premier League in addition to a start in the EFL Cup game against Accrington.

Ricky lambert would be a great signing who cares about his age, excellent pro knows where the net is. Same age as ibrahimovic :)

Mick gets a kick out of signing players who have lost their way.....Toure, Coke, Stewart, Douglas possibly, Varney, Digby, now possibly Best and Jutkiewicz.....

I wouldn't totally right off Jutkiewicz, he's fetched good money in the past and he's still a good age, you just can't tell, he could settle quickly hit the net and gain more confidence in a split moment than the past four seasons....you just don't know..

I'm loving reading all these comments, the best by far;

Lukas Jutkiewicz? Jesus christ. Why don't we just stick a traffic cone up front?

@Kingfisher49; Why hasn't reading re-signed Robson-Kanu? If another championship club have deemed him not good enough for them why would he be good enough for a promotion push with us? Does he have the 20+ goals in him for the campaign ahead?

Anyways, MM is looking at experience at getting promoted from this level so no surprises about the type of players being banded about. I would favour a move for Kightly but not sure about Jutkiewicz, I mean his goal scoring record is not glamourous is it?

Perhaps ME & MM should.ve cashed in on McGoaldrick? Can anyone tell me how many goals we've had from in since being denied a premier league switch? #injuryprone

If Murph has left for Newcastle he will get them a double-figure tally with that level of support but hes not going to play all 40 games is he, 'he now needs to be managed'. £4mill is decent buisness but I could tell MM was a bit resentful that hes losing a proven goalscorer.

I know I'm looking forward to a busy wednesday night for Town :)

Do we not have a youth system in place to produce the next goalscoring number 9?

Seriously, some of the names we're being linked with are not very inspiring & they make me wonder what we're bringing through ourselves if McCarthy thinks this is the way to go forwards.

A Burnley fan my older sibling knows says that Jukiewitz, or however you spell it, is good and does everything right other than scoring. And that Kightly is a waste of space basically

Times like this I wish Mick had managed the likes of Man Utd, Arsenal or Chelsea..then we might sign Kightly upgrades..

Kightly: understandable signing
Jutkiewicz: moves like my great aunt Gertrude. No pace, seems confused a lot of the time and gets tired after 5 minutes. Unbelievably poor replacement for Murphy. How desperate are we? I thought he was off to a League 2 club according to rumours anyway.
Best: offers us a bit of pace up fro t
Shelton: if he can match his international form will be a good addition to the side.

Personally, don't believe the rumours re: jutkiewicz. I'd take Nathan Ellington, Jason Scotland or even Kevin Lisbie over Jutkiewicz right now.

A lot of this move depends on whether Burnley sign Ross Allen from Guernsey. Personally would like us to make a move for Allen instead.

Bring back Marriott and Rhodes..we have the money and we should be planning for the future and not hiring for other clubs' cast offs. What a complete and utter shambles we have become under Evans and McCarthy

Martin from Derby would be a great shout but I can't see Derby selling to potential promotion rivals or us meeting their estimations (likely to be £5m+)? Also, whoever keeps saying Dack for £1.5-£2m....didn't we try to sign him before and they said they wanted £5m for him?

For me: in this order

Rhodes
Marriott
Shelton
Martin
Kightly
Best
Scotland
Jutkiewicz

Only rumours. jutkiewicz is highly unlikely. Exactly the kind of player MM doesn't like; very little work rate, zero effort and spends minutes of the game just walking slowly around. Very easy to mark for opposition defenders and offers little to no threat. I can categorically say that he will NOT be coming here. MM and TC wouldn't sign him.

If we are getting Best do we need Jukeiwcz? Both back up strikers in my view.

Spend the money on young & hungry players - Armstrong at Newcastle, Dack at Gillingham. We need pace and creativity to add to the abundance of experienced players we already have.

so once again we are linked with a player and everyone shoots it down. so who shall we sign then?

GoldieBlue added 07:59 - Aug 29
I don't think this will happen and i would be very underwhelmed if it did. These are they kind of players we could have signed without selling Murphy, would not be a significant fee for either.

Would love to see who MM would buy if he was given all the money, he really has worked miracles in the transfer window with next to no money.

Kightly is a top player at this level. Great addition to the squad.

Not sure about Jutkiewicz, sounds like he could be injury prone.

God forbid we should sign a couple of players who got promoted last season.

This is proof MM is dammed either ways by some, 4 years of "why are we signing players from related clubs" "relegaton cast offs, no ambition"

Now we are (rumored and people are already whinging) to be signing two players from a side that went up last season and they're still not good enough.

Frankly we could sign Ronaldo and you lot would be whinging that there isn't any budget left for a right back.

Out of the 4 league games we've had we have actually won 3 of them (dodgy officiating aside) so I don't know what the problem is.

Average age of Squad is down to about 23 so it can't be to many oldies.

We're winning games (aside fro. Pre mentioned games affected by backhanders to the man In black)

Were playing better football by almost all accounts that I hae both seen and read and yet still people bang on with the same old clap trap.

Apparently PNE were poor, it's amazing that every tr we play is poor. If we win, well it doesn't mean anything we beat a poor side, if we lose we lose to poor opposition . Not once since Mick has been in charge have we played a good team by some accounts.

Well wolf is being cried to often. It's time to.give the.man credit for saving us from the drop, making us play off contenders season in and season out and doing it all whilt taking some real abuse by so called fans
Fans whm if they are spoken to like that on here wang on about terrible it is and how offended they are and how no real town fan would speak to.another in that way.....

Anyone else seeing the hypocrisy?

Honestly it's like listening to teenagers some days, only teenagers actually have a bit more pragmatism.

Blue and true we have played 5 league games and only won two but you see what you want
3

BlueandTruesince82 added 09:44 - Aug 29
No surco we won 4. Now the stats say 2 but as above that us due 2 appalling decisions being made 2 goals ruled out for offside and 1 clear penalty decision not given. (Even Darren Eadie said it should have been given so what does that tell you)

So no I see what has happened as opposed to those who are blinded by their own agendas.

We beat wolves and we beat scum, we should have 6 more points on tge board if the standem of officating in the Championship were half decenter we would have and its not we played well bit didn't convert, we did out part and put the ball in the back of the net, the ref and linesman should have done theirs.
