No More Signings Before Window Closes
Wednesday, 31st Aug 2016 22:01

Town will not be making any further additions to their squad before the transfer window closes at 11pm.

The Blues have spent today primarily trying to negotiate a deal to sign a striker but we understand that having made a seven-figure bid they were unable to come to an agreement regarding a valuation with that player’s current club, who were keen to bring in a signing of their own before allowing the target to move on.

Another potential replacement for Daryl Murphy, who moved on to Newcastle for £3 million at the weekend, became available late this evening but with not enough time remaining to get a deal done.

The Blues will now wait until January before bringing in another striker to compete for a place in the Town attack with yesterday’s signings Leon Best and Tom Lawrence, and Brett Pitman, Freddie Sears, David McGoldrick and Luke Varney.

Previously, the Blues had a £1 million offer turned down by Barnsley for midfielder-turned-striker Marley Watkins, while another versatile attacking player was also on the Blues’ deadline day radar.

Having added Best, who signed a one-year deal with an option for a further campaign, and season-loan loanee Lawrence yesterday, Jonny Williams returning for his fourth loan spell, also for the season, was ultimately the only addition on the final day of the transfer window.

While the exit of a young player on loan was close at one stage, the only exit was Cameron Stewart, whose contract was terminated by mutual consent.

And just because we haven't made a deal before the deadline doesn't mean a player isn't coming in.

We were mentioned in connection to Bendtner (who is a free agent. We have every chance of signing him.

What a let down! Agree with other posters about selling Murphy without a replacement and even higher prices in the January window. Would like to be positive as some others on here are but it's very hard when we've been led to expect a striker signing. It was obvious when McGoldrick was injured that we'd need someone else up front and we still had Murphy then. I wonder what McCarthy will be thinking about our owner when he's driving home tonight.

Leon Best was a free agent right? and the other permanent signings were Ward 600k Webster 750k and Digby FREE and Murph goes for 3M - you do the math. Once again the club profits even with the summer signings. As I said 'BEWARE' a few days ago I didn't trust the club to pay out on a permanent fee to replace Murphy and I've been proved right.
Now for the excuses from McCarthy saying he couldn't get the right player in on time!!
Happy about the return of Williams though but the club being tight again only paying wages rather than fees.

Hmm, i suspect "over the odds" fee's for ITFC is quite low anyway,
Zac clough probably didn't have any change on him and only had a twenty pound note.

Where is the cash Mick was promised? A weaker strike force with Dids out and no Murphy. Oh dear, set up for mid table this season, #evansout 8years of treading water bar 1.

Oh dear that means a lot of you on here will have to take some more Prozac to see you through to January.

As in a previous post, the same happened with Cressies fee, then Mings fee, and now Murphs, all we get are loans, has beens and journey men, same old story, bad business by the club selling Murph without a direct replacement waiting to sign, the deal should have been done before letting Murph sign on the dotted line! very poor management in my opinion for what its worth.
Disappointed but then again what exactly did i expect? same year in year out! again this season we will be the poor relations with a two bob squad trying to compete!
I have every faith that given the correct funds MM could get us promoted, but sadly that is never going to happen under ME!
We will be close yet again but not quite good enough,

Maybe an out of contract striker has been lined up ? You never know !!

We have an abundance of strikers but even Rush and Lineker had to rely on service! None of ours are in their league, where is the creativity coming from? Big Micks idea of a wide player is one who is great at covering for his full back! Same old same old!

Comments on here are ridiculous from some and we should all support our club with a realistic outlook or stop supporting but definitely stick with facts.
I am gutted Murphy has been sold and not replaced with what we wanted, however facts are 3million for a 33year old who handed in a transfer request had to be taken, but we had a week left.
As with Webster who we bid for in January deals are not always easy to get over the line. I do believe we have bid for players but run out of time. People moan about money but again I'd love us to compete with the bigger clubs or even Bristol City etc however we are where we are and Evans bails the club out at approx 6million a year so hardly not interested.
The squad and team has far more footballers in it than ever before, Ward, Webster great permanent additions and fees spent. Grant, Williams and Lawrence again proper ball players and season long ( also know for a fact Williams will sign for us at end of year if Palace stay up and we do well).
Best - could be decent his record is on par with Murphy's when he first joined. Fraser was a great loan, Dos Santos was, Magilton before that more recently DJ Campbell so let's see. In 3 & 1/2 years we've gone from Nouble, Taylor etc to being a couple short.
Finally for those stating Murphy money not invested Williams and Lawrence are likely to cost about £500k each. Add to that Best salary and that we have clearly made other bids I'm sure it will be invested in Jan.
I'm not jumping for joy but pleased with the signs of better football though want more, pleased with the squad to compared to 3 years ago and pleased to say I've not even added Bishop, McGoldrick or Dozzell into this equation add those three to Bart, Smith, Webster, Ward, Grant, Williams,Lawrence, Sears, an improving Knudsen, a decent and needed Skuse it's a good 9 or so. Yes I'd like a right back in and a striker but I reckon, Best, Varney may improve and surprise.
Realism is needed and support, if in 20 games things are not improving then voice unhappiness but let's get real. Come on Ipswich

Think it's time Evans left the club his lack of ambitions is disrespectful to the fans that pay good money week in week out to support them why not try sign a rickie Lambert or Chris Martin on loan but we are happy doing everything on the cheap at least Mick McCarthy has his favorite signed up johnny williams what a pointless signing

Another point is that some clubs in premier league may cancel contracts and we can still sign players. West Ham have just cancelled the contract of Gus Poyets son and there is a chance Burnley may still release Kightly from his contract.

We sold Murphy because the money was too good and he wanted to go.. We tried to sign a new striker but for whatever reason it did not happen today.. Worse things have happened at sea.. I think we've got a pretty good squad now.. We weren't the only club not to get the players they were after.. If we get beat 5-0 at Reading then have a moan.. But before we've even seen these new boys play.. Get a grip!

Totally agree grubbyoik. We tried for a striker but it didn't materialise so we work with what we've got. Personally, think we've got a stronger/bigger squad than a few years ago. Looking forward to see the team gels with these new additions.

I am relly disappointed with the lack of investment into the team. We seem to lack ambition to win promotion, which seems outrageous but when you compare our investment into the team compared to rivals, it is not so outrageous. Wickham, Mings and now Murphy, all our best players when sold and we were reassured after each sale the money would be reinvested in the team, but the signings have never happened. All the wages talk suggests those sold were on incredibly low wages and the lesser replacements have to be paid more. Be surprised if we were relegated under MM, but becoming less believing in any promotional chances under the current regime
