No More Signings Before Window Closes
Wednesday, 31st Aug 2016 22:01

Town will not be making any further additions to their squad before the transfer window closes at 11pm.

The Blues have spent today primarily trying to negotiate a deal to sign a striker but we understand that having made a seven-figure bid they were unable to come to an agreement regarding a valuation with that player’s current club, who were keen to bring in a signing of their own before allowing the target to move on.

Another potential replacement for Daryl Murphy, who moved on to Newcastle for £3 million at the weekend, became available late this evening but with not enough time remaining to get a deal done.

The Blues will now wait until January before bringing in another striker to compete for a place in the Town attack with yesterday’s signings Leon Best and Tom Lawrence, and Brett Pitman, Freddie Sears, David McGoldrick and Luke Varney.

Previously, the Blues had a £1 million offer turned down by Barnsley for midfielder-turned-striker Marley Watkins, while another versatile attacking player was also on the Blues’ deadline day radar.

Having added Best, who signed a one-year deal with an option for a further campaign, and season-loan loanee Lawrence yesterday, Jonny Williams returning for his fourth loan spell, also for the season, was ultimately the only addition on the final day of the transfer window.

While the exit of a young player on loan was close at one stage, the only exit was Cameron Stewart, whose contract was terminated by mutual consent.

Lets just see how some of these other 'big money signings' do
The transfer window is ridiculous - some of the donkeys that have moved for big money is crazy
Big transfers do not equal success -especially not in as forced window like we operate in
The signings MM has made in close and window are footballers keen and eager to get game time and prove themselves - For the first time in years we have a bench and team that offers some real quality ball players
Yes I would have liked a new striker but trouble is until we know - if ever- who it was we tried to get - pointless moaning
When you have cash other clubs will just push up prices - so lets get behind Best and with the service some of more attacking midfied will offer Pittman and Sears will def see chances .
The self same people moaning about hoofball now moan that we didnt replace Murphy with similar player - go figure
Looking dforward to next few months

I'm a bit disappointed, but only because I came across an "official" looking tweet claiming to be from ITFC that we'd got Jordan Rhodes back......
A rel entertaining striker who wins penalties would've been good - a Paul Mariner Mark Two ideally. Hey ho.
See what January brings - and am I right that we can sign out of contract players in any case ?

COME ON YOU BLUE BOYS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH !.

Spot on Blueherts, Think a lot of us would have loved to risk it as such with a purchase of a right back at least... Our whole squad needs to show their true ability, and ignore moaners like me

So we didn't get a new striker yesterday ....... cue meltdown & various versions of Mick/ME out ...... madness !!!
I'm no big lover of Micks style of football over the last couple of seasons (& have stated so on this website) but even I can see he is starting to try and change things with more creative midfielders, ball playing centre halves, & wide players ...... so as others have said is it a really bad thing that we seem to have replaced our "big man" Murphy with Best (who is actually 6ft 1" to be fair) ?
Perhaps we are looking to play differently ? Something most of us have been in pleading for ??
As for the regular diatribe by some against ME - 2 things.
You seem to conviently forget that we went into receivership owing around £100m which he has taken on, thus saving our club ..... reckon that deserves some respect if nothing else.
Secondly you also forget that in addition to taking responsibility for that debt he has to cover the £6-£8m loss we make every year (before any transfer income)
& some still expect him to put millions more in at a whim & crucify him when he doesn't/ potential investment doesn't work out as yesterday ...... get real !!!!!

Well said Londonblue73
We didn't quite get what we wanted but looking at it realistically 3 million for a 33yr old plus an extra 1 million i undestand if Newcastle get promoted is decent business.
We all hate the hoof ball style so if we get more entertaining football and the Team flying come January we will all be happy and Murphy will be a fond memory.
Get everyone fit and it could be a great season.
I also think Best may just surprise us all.

Window now firmly closed, but we can still sign a 50 goal a year striker who is a free agent if there is such a thing out there, we had all better get up the Park on Sunday and have a look!

Happy with the majority of the additions we have made but disappointed that we didn't sign a first team striker with mcgoldrick crocked, Sears out of form and unconfident, Varner and best are getting along with a poor goals to games ratio across their careers, we are relying on a Leicester loanee. There have been rumours of a Murphy leave at different points across the summer MM and ME should have looked at those and at him and gone "let's be realistic team will want him" and have started enquires well in advance to ensure that we are in for a replacement in case of a situation similar to what has happened over the past week. A championship club shouldn't be caught out with a bigger team suddenly interested in their best players and then buying quickly we needed a backup plan. poor management from both MM and ME. However some good business has been made and I'm thrilled to see that joniesta is back!

Our style had been based on pumping it up to the big fella, being belligerent and hard to beat, I assumed because that was what was needed when we were bottom with 7 points.
I have seen the academy grow, players we have nurtured coming through and an increasing focus on passing to feet, skilful players and panache being attempted.
Murphy wanted to go, and maybe this will bring a more fluid exciting "Ipswich Town" style of football that we love and remember.
Ward is our top scorer and Pitman knows where the net is, to me goals coming from a wider range of sources than the big fella is great and a sign of progress.

My god! @blues1 don't you ever stop going on about agents fees, signing on fees, wages etc. - you banged on about this last season, it's the same position for other clubs not just Ipswich, it doesn't stop other like minded clubs getting permanent additions. Don't make excuses, ok we might not have got a striker in on time and shouldn't pay over the top as a deadline approaches but still is not good business on our part.

Those calling others idiots for opinions is very sad .
If anybody thinks it was only Murphy playing that led us to the style of hoofball you are very deluded , we played that style when Murphy was not playing that is MMs style even with little forwards ?
Lawrence is a gamble the same as the villa winger we had on loan who never played , same as Stewart , Henshall , AMN
Williams is injured
Best has not scored regularly in this league for 8 seasons

Bedsitfc if you are so confident Best will outscore Lambert do you want to put money on it ?

Why not make Tommy Smith into a striker. He's been used before-a few years ago

The only player I'm gutted we didn't go for or get is Adam Armstrong.. But then I get the feeling Newcastle wouldn't let a potential promotion rival have him.. Instead they let him go to a club whom they hope will play him every week and will take points off their rivals.. That better be the reason!!!

The golden rule of accepting a good offer for an important player is ensuring you recruit an adequate replacement.
Money in the bank doesn't kick footballs - so it's absolutely not better to "take the money" as we won't be promoted for being frugal.
We should really have agreed a deal with Armstrong coming on loan as part of it or agreed subject to securing a replacement elsewhere.
I beleive that the club would have given MM the funds if he's found the right player in budget who wanted to join. So this isn't an issue of will for me but one of bad management.
I also disagree that Murphy in the side singlehandedly dictated our style of play - we'd still hoof it with Warwick Davis upfront whilst The Boring One is in charge,

If any of you moaning we haven't spent sod all of the Murphy money. Read the report in the ipswich star. It states there that the signing of Lawrence, Best and Williams cost the club in the region of £2m.

GiveusaWave added 11:59 - Sep 1
Correct blues1, and MM did try late on to get the guy in from Barnsley for about 1m so that would have been all the cash.

Loans and frees do cost a lot. The average loan nowadays can set you back 500,000. Free transfers are never free. With agent fees etc they tend to go into the hundreds of thousands also. Toure and Coke last season were expensive. Free isn't free.

Tommy. Of course it affects other clubs. But their fans aren't whinging and accusing their team of spending no money like people like u do constantly. Read the eve ing star report. You'll see that what I've been trying to tell u and others for some time is true. The signing of Lawrence best and Williams cost £2 m. So 2 thirds of the Murphy money spent in 2 days.

Guentchev. Apparently the striker we had a bid in for last night was Connor Washington. Also had a bid in for a winger, Kennedy from Portsmouth.

Whatever the guesstimates of what was left over from the Murphy fee and his salary saved, after the loan signings, still overlooks the obvious fact that we need another striker - the club tried to sign another striker yesterday - and failed. Can't put it more simply than that. Whether that was a loan, a free, a £50k player or a £5m player is moot, whatever the budget we're a player short at the pointy end of the park and I'm not sure it was wise to flog Murphy a few days before the closure of the window, without a secured addition to that part of the squad. This is hardly contentious, we tried to sign a replacement, that proves MM considers it a requirement. It's ultimately a failure of planning. But to be fair we're not the first or last club to make a complete horlicks of the final days of the transfer window. We don't actually have a great deal of experience of it (we're usually not involved)! Will just have to manage until Jan now. Nothing else we can do now. These are the sorts of unexpected opportunities that you'd hope the likes of Best might be motivated to try to grasp with both hands. We might not need to buy another striker come January... Funny old game...

.......... the satisfied Charlies are out on here again - enough to keep Evans / McCarthy taking the pee, and having a laugh the other side of their hand.

No need for the Club to have any ambition - with this lot. We stroll on, thankfully we still have some supporters who have ambition, and not at all satisfied by continuously being mugged. Keep voicing the disapproval.

But is it enough to have any effect ... ?? ......... doubtful. We are what we've become - and it looks like staying that way unfortunately.

Totally wrong - He bought the club for 12 million and we had a debt of 32 Milllion.!!..which he takes interest payments on.!..and all the time under his ownership our debt goes up and now sits at around 100 million..we are going now where quickly..and sadly stagnation normally is a normally precursor to decline...just look at the crowds , or lack of..less money to run the club will result in more debt..owed to ME.!!..the guy is no mug and you can be assured that losses will be set against pother arms of his near 1 billion pound (wealth) businesses...considerably more the other club owners who do invest...Gibson being a prime example.

Best was cover for Didz and was here prior to Murphs going..so in essence we got 2 loans one of whom can,t play (yes..granted he is a great little player)..but we sold our currently fit and possibly our best striker and did not replace him , and the club say we have spent a good portion of this on the 3 in but forget to equate the outgoing players from last season and in this window.

We required a quality striker and a good RB..WE GOT NEITHER.!!

....... shortmarine1969 - absolutely right - there's only one set of MUGS ..... !!!

They continuously identify themselves on here - and it most certainly doesn't include Evans or McCarthy.

Perhaps the penny may one day drop - not confident tho' - it would take a small element of intelligence.
