McCarthy Pleased With "Promising" Webster
Thursday, 15th Sep 2016 06:00

Blues boss Mick McCarthy says he’s really pleased with summer signing Adam Webster, who was widely viewed as Town’s man of the match in Tuesday’s 1-0 win at Derby.

The 21-year-old, signed from Portsmouth over the summer, started the season in the team before dropping out for the Preston game when Tommy Smith came back into the right-sided central defence role.

But a back injury to Smith allowed Webster to return at the iPro Stadium and McCarthy says the one-time England U18 and U19 international is someone he sees as having a big future.

“He was bought for that reason, he is very promising,” he said. “I left him out against Preston because I thought Tommy Smith was a better defender, and at the present he probably is. But as a footballer, he’s better than all of them.

“As [we saw at Derby], you’ve got to be able to defend sometimes in this league, we sometimes forget that, but some of his runs forward were excellent.

"I’m really pleased with him. Overall, I’m very, very pleased with him.”

Berra is better player than Smith. Chambers is not a right back as we all know. If he is not going to play centre back he shouldn't be in the team despite the passion & commitment.

No idea whether Webster is a good right back but I wouldn't play him in midfield. In my view Skuse is good in that screening role but needs creativity around him not Bru & Douglas.

Len Brennan agree with you apart from chambers, he is not just not a right back, he is no footballer of any sort what so ever, to be fair to him he's a good captain wearing his heart on his sleeve and I love that in a pro but Berra could step in to the captain role imo

Webster could prove to be one of Mc Carthy best signings in my opinion, and a sign of a new way forward for the team.

Thinking of Saturday, Villa have been racking up yellow cards all season, so I'd expect MM to start strong and deploy impact off the bench rather than flair from the off and see them kicked off he park in the first 20 minutes. That said Tommy Smith's a doubt but I'm very keen to see Webster start against Villa and see how he deals with a big game that looks as if it will be very physical - and probably full of Premier League guile and simulation too.

Another penalty's on the cards. Get your biggest gloves on Bart, and let's hope for a good result and firm refereeing.
