Chambers Always Looking to Improve
Tuesday, 27th Sep 2016 06:00

With the debate about the merits of Luke Chambers as a right-back set to run and run the player himself admits he can still improve in a role he has made his own, albeit reluctantly at times.

Chambers said: “You should always try to improve. The day I think I can’t improve will probably be the day I finish, especially at this level. There isn’t a game when you don’t come up against a player who isn’t a threat and isn’t a very good player, especially on the wings in the Championship.

“The quality in the Championship is improving year on year with the money that’s being thrown about, so you are going to have to improve. Me, individually, us as a team, I feel we have a very, very strong squad and I think the additions we have made can make a real difference for us.

“There are a lot of different options. Jonny Williams has come in this week and we’re looking forward to having him back. It has given the players a real buzz. We’ve got a lot of attacking talent and we need to get the ball to them.”

Asked if the Town new boys were still settling in, captain Chambers replied: “There are quite a few systems that we’ve played so far and there are quite a few new lads as well. They are all trying to stamp their authority on games.

“Wardy has come in and done very, very well, scoring a few goals for us. I think Tom Lawrence has done well in the first two games he has played for us and Leon Best came on the other day early on and he looks ready to go.

“He’ll be another threat for us. I’m hoping they all settle in as quickly as possible and things click for us but we need to do the basics well and not just play one dimensionally, which we did on Saturday at Leeds.”

Chambers, who will switch to the centre of the defence for tonight’s visit of Brighton, has not scored since January, in the 2-1 home win over Leeds.

He added: “I think I’ve been playing more of a different role this season. I haven’t been as far advanced as I was in the last couple of years because Wardy’s been playing primarily on the right hand side and has been a lot more attacking for us.

“Basically, I’ve just been backing up his play, but it would be nice to get on the back stick for a header now and again.

“Of course, playing in the middle will mean I’ll probably be up for corners, which is something I’ve not been doing for the last few weeks. That’s something where I’ll be looking to get on the end of the others lads’ deliveries.”

Last week manager Mick McCarthy decided to go public with his feelings about Chambers, insisting he would not be dropped and that his position was ‘nailed on’ for the remainder of the season as long as he remained fit.

Chambers said: “I don’t read the papers any more but one of the lads mentioned it to me. I feel he’s a very good manager and a very successful manager — the best I’ve played for.

“When he says something like that it’s always going to pick someone’s confidence up.

“I’m not saying I was lacking in confidence. In fact I don’t feel I’ve lacked in confidence during my career so what he said won’t actually help me in any way but it’s obviously nice to know.

“You want to be in the team on the back of your performances and playing well.

“It’s great that I’m one of the best captains he’s had and that he considers me to be great around the place but I need to be playing at my best to be in the team.”

I feel sorry for Chambers and Sears, 2 good players and genuine good blokes. them being played out of position is ruining both the confidence of the players and the team. They are not good enough out of position. As for the supporters, nobody seems to give a damn about them!

@Cloddyseedbed - one of the best posts I've seen on here!

I think those that moan on here - which they are entitled to do - but are probably also the people that Jeer and Boo Chambers on a Saturday or Tuesday - forget he is being played out of position or at least don't take it into consideration when they give him stick!

The man is one of the best Captains you'll see - but needs to be helped out by the manager! Let's hope tonight he and Berra have a good game and help young Emmanuel!

No doubting Chambers' commitment.....just the ineptitude of our manager.

Chambers seems more honest and correct than his Manager in what he says.Haven't heard McCarthy say that his team played one dimensionally against Leeds.

Trouble is he is so stubborn, arrogant and sure of himself;that to go into detail about a loss would infer that he didn't get everything right, which he would never do.

I think boos and jeers at Chambers are actually for Micks ears so he can see how frustrated us fans are,he is very poor in that position and will continue to get stick.
