He was a wonderful man as well as a brilliant manager. He took years to build his teams but it was new and exciting football and we would attack any team no matter who they were. His rapport with the fans and the people of the town with never be equalled. God bless you Sir Bobby for all you gave us.

Yep, I remember when he first came to our club, things did not go to well to start with and the supporters were yelling for his scalp. But as we can remember, the Cobbolds were not ones for making hasty decisions and gave him time to sort it out. the rest is history. WE are in a similar situation with MM now with the supporters all yelling for MM scalp and ME not being swayed by arm chair managers.

Thundercat - you are entitled to your opinion, but please don't compare the great Sir Bobby Robson with MM. Nor for that matter the Cobbolds with Marcus Evans.

If the word legend could be understated it would have to be for Sir Bobby.
A legend for clubs & country.
Let's put all the sh!t aside for this one & just honour the man.

Thundercat600 I don't know if you had the privilege of seeing Robson when he first arrived but for those of us who did it was clear he wanted to play attacking forward thinking football not the rubbish McCarthy serves up. Also he didn't resort to badmouthing the supporters and using foul language.
The two are totally different both in football terms and as people and for anyone to suggest McCarthy should be favourably compared to Robson is an insult.

Thundercat 600.Situation in no way similar.

Sir Bob was in his 2nd UK Managers appointment,IN THE TOP DIVISION,where he kept Ipswich all the time whereas. McCarthy,as he will tell you,has 25 years experience.

I only recall dissention once against Mr Robson early in his tenure.Think it was a League Cup game,at home, against Man U,where George Best ran rings round us.This was followed by a vote of confidence from the Cobbolds who made money available for Bobby to go out and buy big Allan Hunter. The rest is a glorious history.

Thundercat: Great to see some straightforward and honest contributions here. All of those who have criticised you would I suspect have been part of the mob seeking heads on a plate, because of a bad run of results.

As a huge admirer of Sir Bobby and his team, which I am old enough to remember during the 70's and 80's, one should not forget that the style of play and results improved with the addition of quality in the shape of the Dutch players and Paul Mariner, each of whom the club invested in today's terms approx £30m - £40m.

As for armchair managers or those who go to games to abuse any servant of the club, I will never understand them. Why claim to support a team and then throw abuse at it or its servants, at the ground or on social media. I have not and could not ever do so, at any level of the game, ok there will be games when you will go away disappointed, that is the nature of sport and if you cannot accept that maybe you should find another pastime.

As a non professional but as someone with high level coaching qualifications, what also amazes me is the certainty of such people that they know more than experienced professional coaches and managers. Maybe on the very odd occasion we can see something that the professionals cannot, but those occasions are very rare and when they occur it should not give us licence to abuse.

Being realistic, will we ever get another manager big enough to walk in Sir Bobby's shoes? Probably unfair to even judge or compare, maybe just maybe, we'll eventually get someone who will make Sir Bobby proud! That will do for me 👍

@bbg,how laughable! On the subject of the Dutch boys, do you think either of those boys would have caught McCarthy's attention? Or would he have not been impressed with their lack of defensive inclinations?
You maybe are prepared to watch McCarthy's dourness, but the vast majority have had enough!

I am lucky to have been watching Town back in the 1970's during the glory days of the FA and UEFA cup. Sir Bobby was both loved by the fans and respected by the players.

Sir Bobby did build a team of young players but he also had the funds to bring in some good names where needed. Not many during his tenure I grant you but names like Hunter (can't remember how much, Muhren for 150,000, Thijssen for £220,000, and also Paul Mariner for £220,000. These were large sums of money back in the late seventies and probably equivalent to millions today.

MM has the support of the board (or in this case owner) but not the money to bring in much needed talent. What about the promise of funds released from selling Cresswell, Mings and more lately Murphy.

Managing Ipswich must be like trying to drink soup with your arms tied behind your back, and with a blindfold on. All recent managers have found the job a poisoned chalice. I don't think it matters who manges Town and until the club gets an owner prepared and able to invest it will remain so.

Great picture of a great man!!!! always remembered as a true legend at Portman Road, It's true he had a rough start and had to sort out senior pros not a lot younger than himself one of thbiggest problems was Billy Baxter(one hell of a player he was though) with his mate Tommy Carroll who thought they ran the club, but Bobby sorted it and our rise took off such great days, and coupled with Sir Alfs era a time to be proud of our great club(not forgetting Burley of course) talking about Billy Baxter where is he ? not been marked down by him for ages perhaps he is now andycookguitar!!!!

warktheline: I remember the dutch players as technically excellent and supremely fit. I think MM might have been delighted with them.

Dont forget in our run to the play off 2 years ago, we had McGoldrick and a young Bishop in the team, who were not there for their tackling or running. Unfortunately they have since had a bad run with injuries. If we had been able to add a Lawrence and a Fraser to that team at that time, along with fit Murphy, we would now be Premier. The signing of Webster and Ward last summer suggest to me MM is seeking a young footballing team and I am prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Sir Bobby got 3 to 4 years to find his feet as Sir Alex did at another club. We should learn from history. History tells us that our biggest achievements were when we had stability.

Although a great admirer of Sir Bobby and his achievements I distinctly recall him calling the supporters "morons" and banning local radio from the ground so do not let us think things were rosy all the time.

@bbg, as an historian myself, for my sins, I fully appreciate your viewpoint, and not too dissimilar to mine 2 years ago, but since that initial period I haven't witnessed any kind of improvement in relation to on field performances. McCarthy's stance on football ideology won't change, he's negative, which is fine if you're winning games to nil! That stopped some time ago, and for what reasons? McCarthy's inept team selections ! I could go on, but shan't!
I will ask you this, do you honestly believe McCarthy's heart is still in the job he's doing? Comparing his managerial skills from the first two years to the third and fourth, surely not!!!!

Thundercat the difference is Micks had 4 years. Bobby had barely started.

Mick has been given the time afforded Bobby and more.

I was Mick in all the way until Nov this year because I agree that hire and fire is bad for the club long term both financially and playing wise but we have been dour throughout his tenure. I could love with that when we
Were winning especially after the shambles that were PJ and RK but we play appalling football and are only now safe with what 8 games left. Thats not even mathematically certain.

I don't belive wham bam thank you manger gets clubs anywhere long term but Mick has had time so it is time for a change.
