McGoldrick in Ireland Squad
Monday, 15th May 2017 11:36

Town striker David McGoldrick has been named in the Republic of Ireland squad for their June internationals.

Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane’s side play friendlies against Mexico at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Thursday 1st June and then Uruguay at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday 4th June before they take on Austria in a World Cup qualifier on Sunday 11th June, also athe Aviva Stadium.

A number of players will take part in a three-day training camp at the Fota Island Resort from Tuesday 23rd May before the full squad assembles in Dublin on Sunday 28th May before flying out to New York a day later ahead of the Mexico game.

Speaking about the likelihood of being named in the squad for the games last month, McGoldrick, who has previously won five full caps so far without scoring an international goal, said he was looking forward to being involved.

“We’ve got friendlies against Mexico and Uruguay and then Austria in a World Cup qualifier,” the 29-year-old said. “It will be good to get called up for them.

“I find when we break up for the summer I’m itching to come back after a week or so of the wife nagging at me.

“It’s fitness as well — you don’t have to go out for runs on your own because you’ve got the training and the games for Ireland, and you’re not switching off for too long.

“If I’m called up I’ll be working with top Premier League players and you learn from the experience. I’m just little old McGoldrick from Ipswich when I’m playing with some of the strikers there.

“It’s good to go there sometimes because it’s a real good atmosphere in and around the squad.”

Former Blues Jon Walters, Daryl Murphy and Conor Hourihane are also in the squad.

Good for him. I'm always proud to see our players lining up for their country
BUT
isn't it sad that Murphy and Walters aren't still with us, and that Hourihane didn't break through with us. How many others, including loans we've failed to keep hold of that have gone on to greater things ?
We've lost too many good players in recent seasons,so we've failed to build and failed to replace.

To be fair, we got £3m for Murphy and at least that for Walters, both of which were good deals for the club, even if those funds were not reinvested,
As for Hourihane, he looks a very decent footballer now alright, but who of us really knows what he was like at the time he was released? Many young players are released from the club every season, most of them for good reason. Sometimes getting released is the kick up the backside some of these kids need and the reality of their situation drives them on to knuckle down and put in the effort that is needed on top of their skills. For every Hourihane out there, there are countless other who don't come back to make us scratch our heads.

Would've preferred him to have a good summer break and come back for pre-season raring to go for once. I pray that he can go a full season next year without an injury. It's obvious how much better we are when he plays.

Well Dino has been here approaching 5yrs now, so I would have thought he would have some sort of settled team in that period of time ???? Antonio Conte done it in one season so why can't DINO do it !!!!! LOL and louder !!!!!
Oh I forgot it is a little simple case of Finance, But there again could Dino do it with finances available ????

Didz is probably our best player on the ball, opens up play & creates space, but next season he needs to start delivering more goals!!. Would like to see him in the no.10 role, playing off a new striker in a 4.4.1.1 format.

DINO OUT

When Hourihaine left town my neighbour who is a taxi driver drove him to the airport he told him he left because he was homesick. Not the first time that's happened to a youngster we took on. Does he he club really give enough support to these young lads, because that's just what they are and probably never been away from their families before.
