Simon Milton has announced he is set to leave Town after 30 years, first as a player and then as part of the backroom staff, most recently working as the club’s director of academy sales.
The 53-year-old, who joined the Blues from Bury Town in 1987 for a fee of £5,000, revealed his exit in the latest academy newsletter: “I have decided that the time is right for me to leave my position as director of academy sales.
“This is not a decision I have taken lightly but one which I feel is right for me at this time.
“I will be very sad to leave the club after 30 years but will still attend home matches supporting the team and meeting up with you all in the new season.
“I am waiting for confirmation on how my existing role will be filled and I will let you know as soon as it has been agreed.”
Town MD Ian Milne said in a statement: "Simon Milton has decided to leave the club at the end of this month to take up a new challenge.
“He has been a fantastic and loyal servant to the club, firstly as a player for 11 years and then for another 19 years working on the commercial side.
“There is no doubt he will be missed and everyone at the club wishes him every success for the future.
“We do hope to see him back at Portman Road next season though, supporting Mick and the players.”
Milton made 258 starts and 72 sub appearances, scoring 56 goals, before retiring in 1998 following his testimonial season. He was a member of the 1991/92 Second Division championship-winning side.
While a Blues player the Fulham-born midfielder spent time on loan at Exeter and Torquay.
Milton, who also played locally in non-league for Thetford, the town in which he grew up, prior to his time with Bury, was inducted into the Town Hall of Fame in March 2016.
In February, he was made the guest of honour at the EFL Cup final by charity Prostate Cancer UK in recognition of the £250,000 he had helped to raise via their annual Amsterdam Cycle Challenge the previous three summers.

Very disappointed with this news as the bloke gives his all for the Club and notably the academy. In my opinion he will be very hard to replace as his enthusiasm is second to none. Did not rate him too highly as player but always had a goal in him. Thanks for your services Simon but sadly more doom and gloom for our Club. When will it end ?
He could just be on a normal salary and been offered a lot more by another company.
Sad though how the club can't keep someone who loves the club and is highly regarded by the fans - perhaps that says a lot about our current ownership....
Good luck shaky, thanks for all the great memories from the promotion season under Mr Lyall(proper manager). Shut the 'green door' behind you on your way out, respect : )
A great servant and ambassador to the club for over 30 years. Unfortunately in my opinion his role has become impossible and I would imagine for him totally frustrating? How can he market and sell sponsorship for the academy when the manager has no interest in it? A business enters into sponsership to get something back, what does ITFC academy offer anything to businesses or even players under the current regime? Good luck Simon in your new career!
What a shame. This guy has worked his nuts off for the club, in recent years in particular, and his departure will be a real loss believe me. Apart from raising hundreds of £000s, his role as a mentor for some of the younger players will be sorely missed I do believe.
Firstly, thank you for your excellent service to the club Simon and best wishes for the future.
However, it's such a shame another ex player and Ipswich man is leaving. Have to wonder what the real reason is; perhaps like the vast majority of fans he's completely disillusioned by the entire set up under Marcus Evans. Probably not to keen on what we've become on the pitch under McCarthy either.
Really surprised by this as he seemed, from the outside, to be fully behind how the club were doing things. Did a lot of stuff in his role & will be a big miss to the sponsorship side. Would be very interesting to know what the motive is for him leaving although I doubt we will ever know the real truth. Good luck Milts
Mick, this is what a proper bloke looks like. Ipswich through and through. A bit of networking at the EFL cup final. He'll have landed himself a nice little job no doubt. Good luck Simon. I saw Ray Crawford on TV today. He looked fantastic. He could still do a job at centre forward.
I'm with 12thman on this one. Came across as very arrogant when I've had meetings with him. People also going on about all the money he brought into the club, not being funny but anyone should be able to do that with the tools he had.
I am surprised that some people have made negative comments on here re this story. Someone who has spent 30 years at the club in a variety of roles & given his all deserves thanks & good wishes if nothing else. I have never met him but he always sounded positive when I heard him speak in the media. In addition he was a committed player who may not have been as talented as some but wasn't wanting for effort. No idea why he has left so will go with all the best Milts for the future.
now he was a proper bloke, along with a number others, in the days when ITFC was a proper club , Evans has contrived to turn it into a shambles, and seemingly is happy to see the club sink into obscurity .What ever the reason is for Simon to leave after all these years I wish the bloke good luck .
Great Ipswich Town legend, as an Ipswich Town player, living in Thetford at the time, he gave his time to present Harling Colts (of which I coached) a triple whammy of winning both cups and the league. Ipswich through and through.
Good service to the club, but a legend? I dont think so. a reasonable player who was a paint sprayer playing for Bury town when town gave him a chance. He grabbed that chance.
Beatie Mills Burley Butcher Mariner Cooper Wark Osman Murhen Thyssen...... they are Legends!
He has had a better offer elsewhere, nothing more nothing less. We dont need to make it a bigger story than it is.
