Town at Home to Birmingham on Opening Day Wednesday, 21st Jun 2017 09:00 Town’s 2017/18 Sky Bet Championship campaign will start with a game against Birmingham City at Portman Road. The Blues face Harry Redknapp’s Midlanders on Saturday 5th August before visiting Luton Town for their Carabao Cup first round tie in midweek. Town then travel to manager Mick McCarthy’s hometown club Barnsley, who were beaten 4-2 at Portman Road on the opening day of last season, on Saturday 12th August, before a trip to newly-promoted Millwall three days later, Tuesday 15th August. The first month continues with back-to-back home games against two other London clubs, Brentford on Saturday 19th August and Fulham on Saturday 26th August. Following the season’s first international break, Town travel to QPR for their fourth game against opposition from the capital on Saturday 9th September before the Blues make a midweek visit to Derby on Tuesday 12th September. The season’s second month continues with another of the promoted sides, Bolton Wanderers, at Portman Road, Town making the trip to Leeds, then Sunderland and Bristol City travelling to Suffolk. Norwich City are currently down to visit Suffolk for the season’s first East Anglian derby on Saturday 21st October, while the Blues are at present scheduled to make the trip to Carrow Road on Saturday 17th February, however both these games are likely to move to Sunday lunchtime kick-offs as is usually the case. The Christmas period sees the Blues visit boss McCarthy's old club Wolves on Saturday 23rd December before QPR are at Portman Road on Boxing Day and Derby County are in Suffolk on Saturday 30th December. Town travel to Fulham on New Year’s Day, which would appear to scupper plans for the now traditional boat trips. The game against the Rams could move to the Friday with the Blues boss having previously moved matches over holiday periods to give players an additional day’s recovery time. Town are currently due to play at Birmingham City on Easter Saturday - March 31st - with the Blues hosting Millwall on Easter Monday, April 2nd. Again, the Birmingham match is likely to move to Good Friday. Looking ahead to the end-of-season run-in, following the Millwall home game Town visit Brentford on Saturday 7th April. Barnsley are at Portman Road three days after that, before the Blues travel to Nottingham Forest on Saturday 14th April. Aston Villa are in Suffolk on Saturday 21st April before the Blues visit Reading on the penultimate weekend of the season, Saturday 28th April. On the campaign’s final day, Sunday 6th May, the 40th anniversary of Town’s 1978 FA Cup victory, the Blues host recently-relegated Middlesbrough with the game having a 12.30pm kick-off. Fans face lengthy midweek away trips to Cardiff on Tuesday 31st October and Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday 6th March, while Sunderland supporters are likely to be less than impressed to be trekking to Town for their first visit to Portman Road since January 2007 on Tuesday 26th September and Cardiff followers similarly unimpressed that they travel to Suffolk on Tuesday 20th February. The Blues' first game against the Black Cats, who manager McCarthy was in charge of for three years from 2003, at the Stadium of Light since September 2006 is on Saturday 3rd February.
